Yep.... be aware that soft resets aren't great on those versions, e.g. with the simple launcher you need to quit out of the game, and then start a "new game", which would waste a lot of time.

So a few examples:

  • S3: Have to be at a complete stop to start spindashing, S3K: can be moving slowly to start spindashing
  • S3: Slopes give you some momentum, so can't do the above, S3K: all fine.
  • S3: If Insta-Shield's effect is active when landing, it will be counted towards the next jump, so you can't insta-shield in quick succession, S3K: fixed so the insta-shield is reset when landing.
  • S3: Going upside down in Carnival night means the walls have no collision, S3K: walls have collision when upside down.
  • S3: Knuckles' areas are incomplete so certain skips and tricks that are used in S3K (e.g. Launch Base) don't work.
  • S3: Act 2 stationary capsules exist beyond the boss before the boss has been defeated, so can potentially complete HC2, CN2, and IC2 without hitting the boss. S3K: capsules only exist after defeating the boss.

Yes, many people do. The Game Room has awful input lag though, and the simple launcher is much better.

Buying it also gives you access to the rom for the game, so you can use one of the allowed emulators with the rom.

Updated Co-op to include 1p2c (one player 2 controllers) as well, as we have a run that fits the criteria of a single-player controlling both Sonic and Tails, and it's been discussed a few times in the past as to whether we should allow them as co-op runs :)

To be honest, with a PC from 2007 you're likely to run into not being able to record the gameplay effectively either, and probably having a phone/camera pointed at the screen for upwards of 90 minutes for a full run will likely give you other issues too.

Not for the main boards no, it might get added as a category extension if someone is serious about running it. Running it on a modern pc requires ini editing or a 3rd party program as well, so becomes a minefield for verification.

Hi Boog, I've actually been meaning to speak to Nacho about this, as it should be ok, but I'm not sure if we want to put any rules in place to ensure nothing too obnoxious is used.

Do you have a link to the mod you were thinking of using?

Yeah, that's fine, as long as the game is clear enough and the audio can be heard.

Note: as the timing is RTA(-TB), playing on PAL will have a time disadvantage.

Glitchless runs don't use it, because it is 100% a glitch.

Just a note, as the Sonic mods are adding Best Ending to the games/categories where it's relevant; I have made the following changes:

S&K

  • Made a subcategory containing Beat the Game, and All Emeralds. (was already done on S3). S3K
  • Opened up the Beat the Game/All Emeralds Subcategory to all Main Categories.
  • Moved NG+ into that Sub Category List (as it meant NG+ had "Beat the Game" and "All Emeralds" within it, which didn't make sense)
  • Edited the NG+ runs to now use the Sonic Alone/S+T variable as appropriate.
  • Moved Co-op out of Misc (as it was now lonely there, and the name was short enough).

Means that now you can submit All Emeralds and NG+ runs for the Tails, Knuckles and Co-op categories.

Let me know if you spot anything off about rules, or runs on the wrong place.

Misc -> NG+ already exists for starting from a save with all 14 emeralds collected for Sonic.

There isn't a huge point in doing one with 7+ emeralds, as the only difference is the lack of the hyper dash for Sonic. NG+ for the other characters would probably be added over at www.speedrun.com/classic_sonic_extensions#S3K once runs are done to see if they gain traction.

For that, you need Rev2 of Sonic 2, which is on the "Sonic Classics" cartridge, along with Sonic 1 and Mean Bean Machine.

It came as a side effect of a fix they did to prevent being able to spindash off the plane in Sky Chase.

As it's not really doable on real hardware I would say this would at best be a misc category if it's interesting enough.

Emulator rules: -Fusion and its core through Retroarch as well as Bizhawk are the only emulators allowed, everything else is banned. -No emulator-only functions such as save-states, slow down, boost, etc.

Fusion doesn't have a core in Retroarch, but the Genesis Plus GX core is considered more accurate than Fusion, so probably should be allowed as well.
