"So even then...even if this feature is ultimately deemed to render those NES games too different from their original source - consoles - why should we ban one of the most accurate emus around simply for having an optional feature?"
For me personally (not speaking for other mods here) it's just that it creates more work/headaches and things to look out for in submissions. Removing it will get rid of at least one of those parameters. Bizhawk is still allowed and one of the better emulators out there to my knowledge. FCEUX might not be cycle accurate but is still a good emulator all around.
I've read the stuff about showing the settings and stuff after submissions. Is that reasonable to expect from runners? I'm personally fine with maybe changing it to that in the future if both the runners and the people verifying are willing to go through that. We're a very small mod team across all the games and we're still looking for more people 😃
@NeoKad not really sure how much it saves in NG but the feature will make it really hard to determine if it was even used or not. Been reading through this thread and following the discussion here for SMB1: https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/thread/5koox/
Hi,
The mod team has decided to ban the emulator Mesen because of a potential run ahead feature, listed here: https://www.mesen.ca/docs/configuration/emulation.html. "Run ahead allows the reduction of input lag by the number of frames specified. CPU requirements increase proportionally with the number of run ahead frames specified."
We've noticed other boards for speedgames ban it too and we'd like to implement a ban across all NES ninja gaidens as well.
All currently submitted runs done with Mesen will be approved, but future submissions will be rejected

By popular demand I've added the category "Damageless" to the leaderboard for NG1. It's under misc
Hi,
We're looking for a few more mods/verifiers to speed up the verficiation process. Please post in this thread if you are interested or have people you want to recommend.
Yeah I think a lot of people use the GV-USB2 and it's solid. Just make sure to get some splitters as well so you can split the game feed to both your TV and to your capture card
Hey,
Yeah it's fine to submit the PAL version, just make sure to specify which region it is when you submit the run. Just keep in mind the PAL version is quite a bit slower
And yes, for optimal speed you should get either a Famicom (AV famicom is my personal favorite) or a US NES.
You are correct. I will look into a good looking way of splitting it up
You should be able to submit a US pacifist run. Right now US, PAL and JP are in the same category.
I haven't really found a good method myself. The only thing that helps is to practice a little bit every day to build up the muscle memory. I don't hold A or anything like that because I found that to be harder and made me slash slower than just rolling the thumb over the relevant buttons
I don't think the answer is creating 5 different categories for what basically is the same category, with one small difference. Though if people here really want it and at least one person shows intent on running a category, under specific rules that aren't defined here, then I don't see why not.
No pickups seems like a good choice that kind of makes sense and I don't feel that UA's run really belongs in any% (Though UA did pick up a subweapon in 7-1 so it depends on how strict you'd want to be with the category rules). Also color_theory seems interested in running it if I'm not mistaken.
Regarding the rules for low% I agree with Messi's suggestion (version 2) with the addition that you should be able to expel ninpo if it doesn't kill an enemy or affect anything else. Same with pacifist.
I'll update the rules this weekend when I'm off work and if you see anything missing just make another post here or whatever.
Alright, but do you see how picking up the sword upgrade does not make it low% anymore? It's like picking up the whip upgrades in castlevania
I agree. That sounds like a reasonable suggestion. Runs shouldn't be rejected just because of accidental ninpo usage (that doesn't kill anything)
