Also the skip you got there won't save any time because of the grey platform cycle

The latest route has 4 skips.

This is what Atroz suggested to me long ago, and other than that I don't even remember how to do this run in the slightest any longer.

Enter the Seahorse fight from the top and keep holding up, should get 2 fish. Go back into the top left corner and you should get a double fish again, and then go into the corner again and you should get 1fish 1seaurchin

Just remember to time your attacks correctly so you don't stall the Seahorses attacks. It costs quite a bit of time if you do that

Hope that helps some.

Yeah I think that would be completely fine. It's just the original contra ported onto the collection, right? So basically an emulated version from what I can tell. It's possible it runs at a slightly different speed, but someone would need to check. I have no clue how to do something like that. Either way, I don't see problems with submitting runs from it.

Co-op is the best! You should definitely give it a try. Really interesting how the screen scrolls.

If I had to guess I would think it's no different than people using virtual console versions or the nes mini classics for running the game. I would suspect it might actually put you at a slight handicap in terms of running speed overall. That's just speculation ,but in other words, I assume it would be fine if you wanted to submit runs on it. If someone can look into the running speeds at some point that would definitely shed more light on it.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

That's interesting. Yeah I knew there was some amount of difference in the points, but I didn't know all the details. So maybe 100k is the right idea like misdroppi suggested.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

Yeah not a bad idea. I guess I wonder if 300k would be more appropriate to match the nes tetris board though. Not sure if it correlates as well with this version.

Sorry for the late response. I'd personally think it's a silly glitch in a way. I understand that glitches are big in speedrunning, but it seems different to me in this circumstance. Anyway, I'm certainly not the only mod, and even though I'd lean towards a ban personally I'd be curious as to what others think.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

We are basically saying the same thing in one regard. I entirely agree that you wouldn't have a way to know this without it being presented properly. So yes, the rules didn't clarify since they were misrepresented in the first place. Still doesn't change the fact that these categories existed long before you and I started speedrunning, long before this site came to be, and with very particular conditions at that. If the community decides they should change then I have no real say in the matter. I merely want to communicate to others what this category is.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

The point is that the rules preemptively existed for both categories. Therefore the problem is that it wasn't clarified. So low% and pacifist still have the same meaning regardless of the game they are applied to. Doesn't matter which Ninja Gaiden is being discussed since all three games have no effect over what a category means. If that makes sense. Just because you're the one that ran it doesn't necessarily mean you can change the rules of a whole category.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

Looks like the rules state that now at least anyway. Not sure when they didn't if this was an issue.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

Pacifist and Low% are both categories popularized by SDA. They have always been done in a particular way for the NG series. If I'm not mistaken the NG series was the first to present a pacifist run. Anyway, the point is that the rules for these categories have been long established, and it's a shame they weren't made clear in the first place for the games here on the speedrun.com rule sets.

Low% literally means the least amount of items required to beat a game. In the case of any of the NG games this would mean you only use a sword, as the items aren't necessary to complete the game. So unless the community wants to change these rules for some reason, any run with usage of items isn't rue to the rule set. I think is more of a communication error in the first place.

I'm open to correction if I'm wrong about any of the history on these categories of course, but there should be full clarification in the rules for the sake of those unaware of the category meanings.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

Interesting. We don't allow it for the first Contra, and most leaderboards frown on that sort of thing in general. Well, anyway, a mod should chime in I feel.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

There's no harm in using the code to learn the game, but generally codes aren't accepted in speedrunning. I'm not a moderator for this version of Contra, but I'd assume the moderators share this sentiment. So perhaps it can be updated in the rules for each category. You are definitely allowed to use the 7 lives from the options menu for runs though.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

Yeah the second platform is the important part. And you basically just want to jump asap after landing. Minimal hesitation. Also, this strat is only worth your time if you're going for the veggie glitch. Otherwise you can still make the egg cycle without it.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

So from my experience, the important thing is the jump up to the ledge where you take the damage boost. You really need to make the jump as low as possible, but where you still land on the ledge. At least that's what it feels like to me. Then when you jump off the ledge you'll just pass right through the pidget.

Indiana, USAAngrylanks5 years ago

So you are just wanting to now the inputs required for grabbing the pidget early after the damage boost right at the beginning of 1-2?

There are only a small handful of tetris players even capable of maxing out the score. Maxing out the score also doesn't lend itself to a speedrunning nature. It takes proper building to get a maxout, and a very different play style than one would opt for in a speedrun. So it's better to have a lower score or line goal for the sake of accessibility in the end.
