How to play earlier versions (using Steam)
Updated 7 years ago by v_input_output

This is an explanation of how to downgrade to an earlier version of TumbleSeed with the use of Steam console commands. You must own the game on Steam in order to do this! This guide is written for PC users, but should also work for Mac players-- the only difference should be how and where files are stored on your system.

First, we need to open the Steam console. You can do that by typing this into your browser's address bar: steam://nav/console

Steam saves all updates of a game pushed since its official release. We are going to use the following (simplified) command to get our hands on old TumbleSeed updates: download_depot <appid> <depotid> <manifestid>

TumbleSeed's app ID is 457890, this will stay the same no matter which version you want to roll back to. The depot ID depends on whether you're downloading for Windows (457892) or Mac (457893). Finally, the manifest ID determines which version you get. For Windows, version 1.0 has ID 9099887782718540135 and version 1.02 has ID 488301629420489779. For Mac, version 1.0 has ID 1196135491994689073 and version 1.02 has ID 4469065050544547331. Which version you use is up to preference; I use 1.02 for the small balance updates.

So, for example, if you're on Windows and wanting to download TumbleSeed 1.02, this is the command you would enter into Steam console: download_depot 457890 457892 488301629420489779

When these files finish downloading, Steam will tell you where it stored them. For ease of access it's best if you copy the files to a folder on your desktop or another easy-to-find location.

Now we need to swap TumbleSeed's current version files with the files we just downloaded. On Windows, navigate to your Steam folder then enter steamapps > common > TumbleSeed. With a normal Steam install this path will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\TumbleSeed

Again, it's best to make a copy of the current version files and store them in a folder, presumably in the same easy-to-access location you saved the old version files to. After that, you can simply copy over the current files with the old files, making sure to select "Replace duplicate files in the destination." When you want to play the current version again, do the same process in reverse, copying over the old files with the current files.

One other important note: if you want to keep your local high scores, be sure to make a backup of your current save data! As far as I'm aware it breaks when reverting to older versions. Again, navigate to your Steam folder and this time enter userdata > [your user ID] > 457890 > remote, and copy "playersavedata" to another location. The file path this time will look like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata[your user ID]\457890\remote

It's also best to turn off Steam Cloud sync when using old versions of a game. Right click on TumbleSeed, select "Properties," select the Updates tab and uncheck "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for TumbleSeed." Unfortunately this means that if you install on a new computer or something you won't have your local data, but hey, you made that backup earlier right? Just stick that on a thumb drive and transfer it to the new install's save folder!

That's all for this guide. Most of it was adapted from this more general guide on Reddit on how to download old game versions from Steam, which you can view here (huge thanks to GMMan_BZFlag !!!): https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/611h5e/guide_how_to_download_older_versions_of_a_game_on/

Feel free to ask any questions about this guide or mention any problems on the forum. Happy tumbling! -vio
