Confusion Ending Walkthrough and Pointers
Updated 7 years ago by ZZKer

The Confusion ending is aptly named so in-game and ends with Stanley and the narrator finding a schedule for The Confusion ending. A speedrun of the Confusion Ending mostly involves direct and precise movement.

[section=Timing] Like other categories, timing starts on first movement and ends on the loading screen appearing after the loud alarm noise after finding the schedule.

For the fastest time, start with the short hallway office. The blue office and the hallway office both save around 10 seconds over the regular office.

[section=Walkthrough]

  1. Walk forward through the starting office to the Choice.
  2. Take the right door and walk through the employee lounge.
  3. Walk through the open door on the left.
  4. Walk left onto the service elevator and press the button. [big]LOADING[/big]
  5. After the loading screen, position yourself in front of the door on the left. Note: [small]You have some time to position yourself before the narrator opens the door. You also don't have to be right on it either.[/small]
  6. Once the door opens, if you are close to it, it will close and the door on the other side will open. Walk towards that door until it closes.
  7. Position yourself on the right side of the left garage door, opposite the service elevator. Crouch.
  8. As the garage door opens, walk under it, making sure to let go of crouch once you start moving forward. Head to the right.
  9. Continue down the stairs and into the next room. The narrator will talk then restart the game. [big]LOADING[/big]
  10. Walk through the starting office to the Choice. Wait for the narrator to restart. Note: [small]This part does not go faster once you reach the Choice room. Feel free to look around![/small] [big]LOADING[/big]
  11. Walk through the starting office to the Choice.
  12. Once the door behind you closes, push up against it until the narrator opens it again.
  13. Head back through the office towards the start of the game. You will find yourself in a blue hallway.
  14. Trigger the narrator dialog to go back the other direction, then turn around and do so. The trigger is immediately after/at the final corner in the hallway. It is the second corner after the filing cabinet. Note: [small]Try to walk backwards as soon as you hear the dialog trigger, and swivel while you're walking away from it.[/small]
  15. Walk until you trigger the next dialog by entering the shed-like area. Wait for the narrator to restart. Note: [small]Again, this part is just more waiting once the final dialog is triggered.[/small] [big]LOADING[/big]
  16. Follow the line. However, do take note that there are quicker ways to progress through certain rooms and hallways, such as:
  • After the stairwell, go straight in the hallway, avoiding a room to the right.
  • In the filing cabinet room, turn right through the 4th opening, as it is closest to the stairs.
  • When back in the starting office area, go around the right side of the desks, as it lines you up for the next door.
  1. At the end of the line, the narrator will restart the game again. [big]LOADING[/big]
  2. Go forward until the narrator closes a door on your face.
  3. Push up against the door to the right (437) until it opens. Follow the hallway to a circular room.
  4. Wait until the door on the right opens, and walk through it to trigger the final dialog. The door opens right after "Our destiny awaits!" Note: [small]This door opens toward Stanley, so you'll want to be careful not to get caught on the door as it opens. Of all the doors you wait to open, this is the only one you should have to worry about getting caught on.[/small] Timing ends on the loading screen, right after the dialog "Well, in the meantime..." and the loud alarm noises.

[section=Pointers] One of the main things to look out for during this section is movement efficiency. Make sure all your movement is heading towards the corner you next turn at. You should stay mindful of how strafing affects your forward movement. You can only move at the same speed going any direction. This means when you strafe, your forward movement is no longer as fast as it can be since part of your movement is now going in the direction you are strafing. When turning a corner, line yourself up with the next turning location, going for the straightest path towards that location. Be mindful of the corners you can get stuck on as well. Try to avoid tight corners on stairwells and around desks you know you can get stuck on.

Another thing to note is that almost every door you have to wait to go through in this ending opens away from Stanley. You can use this to your advantage and push up against doors to move through them as soon as possible. This also allows Stanley to clip through some of the doors while they are opening. The only exception to this is the final door in the circular room. This door opens towards Stanley, and thus requires you to stand a bit back and wait till it opens enough to pass through it.

The basement area with the left and right doors as well as garage door is scripted triggers, and requires a specific movement to be optimal. The door on the left opens first after the narrator says "um" in "it's... um, left". The door on the right opens after Stanley is close enough to the left door. You can use this knowledge to your advantage and stand just close enough to the left door, while being ready to sprint towards the right door as soon as it opens and closes. You can line yourself up with the cardboard box on the ground and the left side of the doorframe. The garage door is triggered by a timer after Stanley walks close enough to the right door. Once the right door closes, you can position yourself in front of the left garage door in anticipation for it to open. Since it opens slowly from the floor, you can crouch under it before it fully opens. However, let go of the crouch button as soon as you start moving forward. This will allow Stanley to stand up and move faster as soon as he is past the door. You can also save time by positioning yourself on the right side of the garage door, in front of the next doorway which is on the right side in the garage.

The last thing you should note is the positioning for the back-tracking section in the blue hallway. You must trigger the narrator to instruct you to back-track again while in the blue hallway. When walking optimally, this will happen immediately after the narrator says "The story. Here it comes." The location of the trigger is right at/after the final corner in the blue hallway. This corner is the second one after the filing cabinet. As soon as the trigger is hit, you can head in the other direction to get the next trigger. This can be done quickly by going backwards as soon as you pass the corner with the trigger.

I hope this guide has been informative. I think it can be even faster with door glitch, but since I can't get it to work, I haven't routed it yet. I would assume it would just make the sections where you wait on doors slightly faster (maybe 5-8 seconds total). Good luck on your runs and, as always, have fun!
