Hi!

Everyone in the community involved with this game is about as convinced as it gets that niepanh's run uses some kind of script and is not done all by himself. He uses a variation of the infinite bug jump (IBJ) that doesn't involve switching weapons and requires near perfect inputs in very rapid succession. After running a script ourselves that was still slower than his run, we decided to hide/reject his run until the situation is resolved. He also did not reply to our messages up until now, so we will have to wait. As far as I know, Taeruhs is working on an Any% run so the category shouldn't be empty for too long.

We gave him about a month and a half to respond before we deleted it. Seems like more than enough time, though to be fair he doesn't speak English. He's responded to us before though, likely using some sort of translation tool, but still.

Well, you say that, but according to some runners of other TR games, Niepanh has actually been known to cheat on at least one other occasion. I don't know the specifics of it really, though. It was talked about somewhere on the tombrunner forums.

Regarding glitchless, I was planning to transfer the two segmented categories into this forum as separate threads because I don't think they are the kind of categories that really warrant a leaderboard status. They are basically more like projects than runs. Right now these categories are basically used as archives and not as leaderboards.

The thing about glitchless categories is that in most cases they require a lot of discussions regarding the ruleset as some tricks are considered glitches by some people while others don't think they are. Taeruhs has posted his own ruleset a while ago on the tombrunner forums, but he stopped his glitchless runs so we never really got to see how well his ruleset worked out. His description reads as follows:

"Tricks NOT used were: . Infinite jumps bug (IJB - f.k.a. UBJ); . Airwalk; . Back handspring or left roff to reach "unreachable" high areas; . FPS dependant tricks that look like glitches (e.g. using irregular slopes to make Lara float); . Delayed Swandive; . Any trick which involves making Lara step on something that's obviously not a solid surface (e.g. using the fence shortcut in Croft Manor's maze)"

As you can see, some cases are obvious glitches and some of them are both in a grey area and they are difficult to define in a concise and good way. Seeing how you are the only runner who would submit a glitchless run right now, what's the way you defined your "glitchless" run? Maybe we can work something out here.

Btw, you can now create subcategories to sort the leaderboards :) In TR classics, we now use "Glitches/no glitches" as subcategory, so that glitchless runs have their separate records.

You can't really generalize it like that, it requires a long discussion.

hey guys. im new to speed running and new to this website. i cant perform glitches because i don't know any and because they are to hard for me. i noticed that everyone is submitting to the no BJ category but no one has submitted to the any% category. i wanted to know why. i don't really understand. the reason i was asking is because i was wanting to submit a run to the any% category but wasn't for sure if my run would be acceptable because like i said, i don't know how to perform glitches, i only play through the game normally. i do understand that the term glitch is subjective.

Hey there!

You can look at it in the way of Any% being the most general category, with the other ones having restrictions which your runs needs to uphold for it to "qualify" to appear on those leaderboards instead. Any% no BJ does not allow the usage of a glitch called "Bug Jump", and since you said that you didn't use any glitches, the run would qualify as Any% no BJ as it is unlikely that you performed a bug jump without knowing about it.

Basically, as soon as someone uses a bug jump, his run does not qualify as Any% no BJ anymore and has thus to be moved to the Any% category. I know this is somewhat confusing because the Any% leaderboard is empty for now, but even if you would have submitted it as Any%, we could have still moved it to the correct category, so don't worry about it. :)

Cadarev, Moonfane: Have you guys thought about creating a guide for new players? The Area51 section on TombRunner.net doesn't explain all the new tricks and glitches.

Just an idea ;)

Moonfane is working on a tutorial. :)

This run is not legit it use different savegames and by the way it says glitch used "no", when the runner use at least 3 glitch. Probably the same for his other runs if one have been validated... http://www.speedrun.com/run/1zq4kw1m

Different savegames than what?

I see two possible "glitches", although it's quite a grey area to be honest. It's really hard to differentiate what is a glitch and what isn't. I guess Cadarev just copied it of tombrunner.net, so the blame is on me since I marked it as glitchless.

Besides, the run is 6 years old and use obsolete strats ;)

If the animation of the jump doesn't execute correctly in a way you skip passages you could not, then you can consider it being a glitch. Skipping the cutscene at the start is one too. Maybe that's just me but i would rather see glitchess speedruns it's more interesting than all these runs actually, maybe it needs training for execute these glitch but at the end of the day it's still cheating.

Georgia, USA

I could MAYBE see how you could consider some of the exploits a glitch, although we disagree. However I don't see how you could possibly consider going around the cutscene trigger a glitch. You're literally doing nothing special there. It's just going on some rocks. To claim that that's a glitch would be ridiculous.

Czech Republic

Let alone consider it cheating. I don't understand why there's so many Tomb Raider players that consider glitches a cheat.

Georgia, USA

Using clipping through wall techniques and that just voided your run sweet pea. I am guessing he does this on all his 'speedruns'.

France

How is it just walking on rocks ? I tried many times by curiosity and the cutscene never skipped, i'm pretty sure there is a weird manipulation to do. Whatever if some people like doing glitchruns, but it has no merit.

Georgia, USA

That's just you performing it wrong. I'm telling you it's literally walking on rocks. If you can't do it that's your own problem, you can't just go applying untrue labels to things you don't like. That'd be like me saying no one is allowed to have sex just because my dick doesn't work and it's unfair. It's my own problem that it doesn't work. I can't change the nature of physical relationships due to my own inabilities.

I vaguely recall it's fps dependent.

Switzerland

Skipping that cutscene is not FPS dependent.

New Rules / New Windowed Mode

As of the posting of this message, these rules apply for every category:

  • Changing framerate using a third-party program (e.g. Dxtory, RivaTuner...) mid-run to perform specific tricks is banned. However, you are allowed to switch your refresh rate through the game's options during your runs.
