This is simultaneously kind of a neat and totally frustrating category. I learned it and performed a decent run within 90 minutes, but it did require some guidance from Nami, who is the WR holder at the time I'm writing this. Not everything that you have to do to finish the run is intuitive just from watching someone do it, and there are some obstacles to actually finishing a run that I will explain.

It is advised to run this category on version 1.1 of the game, rather than 1.0. The former is the more stable of the two. Also, if you mess up or crash, you have to start over from the beginning. Here we go!

Step 1: Start Career as normal. Load up Warehouse.

Step 2: Immediately pause, end the run. Press up to loop the menu around (slightly faster, as pressing up is 3 menu moves, rather than 4 if you choose to move downwards instead) and select Watch Replay->Save a Replay. It doesn't matter what it the replay is called, so I opt to call mine the letter "A".

Step 3: This is required: back out and return to the menu that has Retry, Tape Challenges, etc. on it. If you don't do this, the glitch won't work. Immediately soft reset the game by holding Z and Start for 2 seconds. (I hold Z slightly before I press Start because IIRC pressing Start by itself is akin to pressing A on the menu screen)

Step 4: You're back at the main menu. Move down to Single Session (you can do Career as well, but Single Session is faster due to less menuing). Advance until you get to the course select screen. Move the highlighted stage to Chicago, the first competition. Immediately mash B to back up all the way out to the main menu.

Step 5: Press up to loop the menu around to Extras->Load Replay. Select your replay that you saved in Step 2.

Step 6: Mash A as the replay is loading. If you are successful, the game will grant you control, thinking you're in the first competition while you are actually in Warehouse. Pretty cool.

Step 7: Get 5000 points each in two heats. End the competition and claim your bronze medal. Restart the competition.

Step 8: Get 5000 points each in two heats yet again. Be careful though--this time, on the Competition Standings screen that appears immediately after your 2nd heat finishes, soft reset the game with Z+Start. (If you accidentally advance to the third heat, you have to start everything over, as the game will eventually crash if you try to continue. Don't mess this up.)

Step 9: Repeat step 4 except instead of pressing right to move to Chicago, press left until you're highlighting Burnside, the second competition (pressing left is optimal menuing.) Then repeat step 5, loading your replay again.

Step 10: This bit is a little tricky. You want to mash A very briefly as the replay loads. If you mash for too long, you will advance to the lethal third heat of the competition and the game will eventually crash. You want to be careful NOT to advance to the next heat. End the competition instead and claim your second bronze medal. Then restart the competition once more.

Step 11: This time, since the game thinks you're in Burnside, get 15000 points each in two heats. Same as before, on the Competition Standings screen that appears immediately after your 2nd heat finishes, soft reset the game with Z+Start.

Step 12: Repeat step 9 except press left once to highlight Roswell, the third competition. Then repeat step 5, loading your replay again.

Step 13: (This is Step Unlucky 13 for a reason.) Briefly mash A as the replay starts, exactly as in Step 10. If you are lucky, the game will not freeze, and you can advance to end the competition as well as the run, claiming your third and final bronze medal. If you are unlucky, the game will freeze and you will have to start all over again. To my limited knowledge, whether it freezes or not is completely random, and this is probably the biggest reason why people don't run this category haha. Also it is mostly menuing, so if you're not a fan of the skateboarding bit of this game, this category is for you XD

100% Guide for Casuals/Beginners

This route has no inconsistent/hard tricks or skips. Play as Rune, practice Fastplant spinning Christ Air! You can get a really solid time with good execution (the lowest time I could get with this exact route was an 8:45)

100% Intermediate Route Overview

Warehouse

Get boxes on right. Jump over the halfpipe, grabbing the hidden tape and doing a trick for easy combo points in conjunction with the gap. Land near the 2nd set of boxes on the right platform. Hit them then ride over the taxi for the A, turn right to go up the quarter pipe for the K. Do a special trick here for speed and points. Land at an angle slightly to the right to aim for the 3rd box set on top of the transfer. The S should be straight ahead of you and the 4th boxes on the platform past it. Ride up the quarter pipe in the corner where the last box set and E are. Turn around and head back towards the halfpipe. Jump over it to the T. Make sure you have 15k points. Retry End Run.

School

Jump left off the opening awning and land grinding on the picnic table below. Use the left ledge to gain speed then wall jump to the other awning. (If you struggle with this, take the casual route: go to the building on the right of the first awning, ride up the ramp to its second floor. Turn ~45 degrees left from here and straight ahead is a ledge and rail that lead you to the other awning.) Ride down it to grab the hidden tape, doing a combo then ride past the K kickers. Turn around and jump the gap, grabbing the K. Ride up to the S and turn around, grinding the rail back down. Turn left at the end to grind the next picnic table. Use the ramp to jump straight across the ditch and grind the 3rd picnic table. Turn sharp right and take the left bridge back towards the A rail. Grind this, but don’t ollie off of it. You’ll be heading directly towards the 4th picnic table to grind. Follow the quarter pipe to the T. Jump over the rail between the pools for the E, and ride through the left pool to find the final picnic table in the corner. Make sure you have at least 25k points. Retry End Run.

Mall

Turn around immediately and drop to the floor below. Grind the left rail to grab the S and get speed. Go straight up the next escalator to hit the first directory. Grind the flagpole on the right to set up the K grind. After the K, turn left to ride up to the next floor (or wall jump to it if comfortable) where you can break the 2nd directory. Grind the ledge and jump to the high rails; the hidden tape is between them near their end. Below the hidden tape is the 3rd directory, and the A is further back on the rail above the pool. If you miss the tape, you can wall jump the back of the ramp next to the 3rd directory to make it back up to the high rails. Go down the next escalator. The 4th directory is in the middle of the platform at the end of this hallway, and the T is on the rail behind it. Outside, jump the ramp over the pool to grab the E, then ride through the last directory at the end. Make sure you have at least 30k points. Retry End Run.

Skatepark

Go straight, and do a combo on the ledges in front of you. Land straight at the end, then use the small ramp to jump to the halfpipe on the left. Do a combo with this gap. If you need more points, continue doing combos in the halfpipe. If you haven’t bailed, End Run once you have 15k points. Do the same thing for Heat 2, then End Competition.

Downtown

Use the ledges and rail on the right to grab the S and perform combo(s) for points. Turn slightly left to break the first sign, and ride down the ramp to the fountain for the K. To the left of the fountain is a similar up ramp where the next sign is. Break it, then make another slight left. Ride across the street and up the quarter pipe where the 3rd sign is, on top of the triangular platform. Walljump up the building and follow its edge. The E is on a rail just below the end of it. Failing this, there is a ramp that makes it easy to get up to the E rail. To the right of the E is the 4th sign. Make your way further down this street, avoiding the taxis to get to the A which is above the quarter pipe. To the left of the A is the final sign to break, on a slightly raised platform. Turn around and use the opposing quarter pipe to wall jump up the building. Ride to the T in the catwalk, then turn around and go up to the roof with quarter pipes all around it. Gain speed from the right quarterpipe, then jump the opposite ramp to grab the Hidden Tape. Use a trick here for easy points with the gap. Make sure you have 40k points, Retry End Run.

Downhill Jam

Do a trick on the way down the roll in to build some special and points. Jump the ramp on the right up to either of the rails, and make sure to ride to the end to open the first valve. Turn a bit left to jump off the ramp for the S, and do a special trick here to get speed up. To the right is the ramp with the second valve; make sure to hit the center of it for it to open. Fastplant off this ramp to try making it to the cliff, from there it guides you to the K rail. If you don’t make this gap, ride through the tunnel under the cliff, and use the ramp just past it to jump up to the K rail. Backtrack a bit to get up the big ramp leading to the overhead rail. The 3rd valve is on this. The end of this rail takes you to a platform with the A, grab it and ride the next rail down to another platform. There’s a clockwise route from here to get to the hidden tape, with a couple quarter pipe to quarter pipe gaps to make. The end has a ramp pointed directly at the hidden tape crow’s nest. Jump to it then ride straight down the roll-in to another ramp in front of the Mountain Dew tower. Jump to the top of the tower to open the 4th valve, then ride off the side of the tower instead of going underground. This makes it easier to grab the T above the next ramp. At the end of this decline, go past the end of the pool and use the left quarterpipe to gain speed. While heading towards the opposing quarterpipe, angle slightly left to make it up to the rail. If you go too far left before making it high enough, a pseudo-invisible wall will push you down before clearing the E rail. Jump right off the end of the E rail to land in the water. The game will place you going down the ramp where the 5th valve is, in front of you on the wall to the right. Wallride it, Retry End Run.

Burnside

Grind the left side of the starting halfpipe. Perform a combo off the small ramp ahead. Continue to the quarterpipe straight ahead, do a trick on it. Coming down it, there is a ramp that can launch you over the bridge above. Combine this gap with a special for a generous amount of points. If you haven’t bailed, End Heat once you have 25k points. Repeat for Heat 2. End Competition.

Streets

Run 1
Turn sharp left and grind the first cop car. Follow the path on the right to the balconies. Go slow down each so you don’t fly past the last one. The K is in the room past the glass on the right. Break the glass on the other side to fall down, and grind the second cop car. Turn right and follow that street to its end. Use a variety of tricks to get and keep special, while avoiding staling any specific trick too much. The 3rd and 4th cop cars are parked near each other there. Grind them, then go right up the slope. The A is between the two quarterpipes next to each other at the end of this alley. Make the gap between them, grabbing it. Follow this street straight until you come to the funbox on your right. Use it to jump up to the ledge which leads to the T room. Ollie to make sure you get the T, then go left out the door or through the glass. Follow this street straight a bit until you come to the room on your right with 3 slopes going up to it. Use the middle one to jump in there, then skate the pool. The E is high up above the back of this pool. Once you get it, hold forward to exit the pool, don’t ollie or you might slam into the high wall and lose speed. Once out of this room, go right further down this street. The 5th cop car to destroy is near the corner, a little to your left. Grind it, then there is a park on the right. Stay on the sidewalk, and follow it to the stairs. Jump up the first set, turn right and jump up two more sets to get the S. Don’t worry about score yet, but if you have 50k great!
Retry
Run 2
Do a couple quick combos to get special. Special grind the rails going down the balconies, and throw in a couple extra tricks for combo points. Turn right, and ride down the street a bit til you get to the last building on your left. Use the ramp there to wall jump up to the awning. Ride clockwise up the ramps to get to the roof. Try to keep special up if possible on the way. Go up the mega ramp, and try not to go so fast up the first hill that you bump the top. Fastplant off the end towards the hidden tape, and spin + your biggest scoring special trick. Make sure you have 50k+. If not, use the various ledges around to get grind combos until you do. Retry End Run.
If you’re comfortable enough with both runs, you can use the wall jump method from Run 2 in between getting the A and T in Run 1 to save some time.

Roswell
Perform a combo down the roll-in to gain special. In the halfpipe, use fastplants + spins and high scoring specials until you have 35k+ points. As long as you haven’t bailed, End Run then. There are multiple gaps you can make use of if need be, such as the gap to the right of the opening halfpipe, or the transfer over the opening roll-in. Repeat for Heat 2, then End Competition.

# Full Script

## A Note

This guide assumes you are playing as Rune Glifberg with Autokick turned Off. The general route works fine with it On (the default setting), but some timings may be different from the notes in this guide.

With Autokick Off there are 3 frames where acceleration is doubled in the kick animation. Also, Autokick On has a natural speed decay which Off avoids.

Other characters can use this route as well, but Rune has the fastest potential. See George’s IL PB for an example of this route with Jamie Thomas and Autokick On.

Overview: 8/10 Difficulty. Fortunately, this level is very short, and the hardest parts have easier alternatives. Because of the short nature and cramped space, though, any little mistake can lose a lot of time. Avoiding the hard parts might make this slower than the counterclockwise route.

## Section 1: Opening to 1st Boxes

1a: Trigger buffer

Holding a trigger before confirming at the tape challenge screen will give you a sharper angle than holding it while the level loads. I start holding R before I even pick my character so I know I’ll have the right angle immediately when I load in.

1b: 360

You can use a 360 Fastplant Madonna to fill most of your special bar. A couple characters (not Rune) can even fill it completely here.

1c: Straight jump

However, it’s not possible to get the full 360 rotation, so it is actually faster to jump straight (but harder to fill special bar before the first grind). To get there as quickly as possible, you’ll want to wait to hold ollie until at least 1 frame after loading in, but not after more than 9 frames. Tap up twice to get a Fastplant. You will also want to wait until at least 25 frames after loading in to release ollie. This is roughly when Rune’s right foot leaves the ground. Do a Madonna and hold it as long as possible for the fastest speed. Turn sharp left just before reaching the boxes to tap the corner of their hitbox and prepare for part 2. If you wait too long to release ollie, you’ll crash into the wall before you can turn which will slow you down significantly.

## Section 2: The roll-in and the blind grind

2a. Rolling down the roll-in

When starting out on this route, I recommend just riding all the way down the roll-in and turning left at the bottom. Pay attention to the geometry: if you go too fast you will get air after a certain point. Depending on your movement, this can cause a bail. Even if you land, it forces you to take a wide left turn. Riding down at a slight angle instead of straight can help avoid this. You want to cut the corner as tight as possible.

2b: 2 grind or not 2 grind?

It is best to grind the quarterpipe between the two roll-ins. If you ride all the way down the first one, ride up the quarterpipe but make sure to turn back right enough that you don’t grind the coping at too harsh of an angle, or else you might not make the gap.

You can jump directly from the first roll-in onto that coping. Jump early and high enough or you will clip the back corner of the ramp and bail. Jump close enough to parallel to the ledge or you won’t be going fast enough to make the gap. Buffering ollie can also help ensure you get over. Config Glitch or clawing makes this easier; if doing neither of those, you might have to stay on the coping a few frames in order to jump high enough to make that gap.

Do a trick off the coping (I prefer 360 Shove It here); it’s a tiny bit of extra speed, but more importantly combined with the gap this combo should build up your special meter. Though the scoring requirement is low, a typical good run on this route leaves very little room for scoring, so getting what you can now will be helpful for finishing the Pro Score later.

2c: jumping down the roll-in

The best way to go down the roll-in is to ollie over roughly half of it. Do a trick after a Nollie or Fastplant based on preference, but note that Fastplant will take you a little further so the timing will be different for each. I prefer Benihana here for optimal scoring. Beware of lag frames when hitting the glass: they can eat your ollie and/or up inputs. This usually means you are jumping too late. Release c-down a little before hitting it. You want to land on the steepest part of the roll-in, and begin turning left just a little before landing. Go too far left and you will crash into the wall. Jump too far down and you won’t have the height or angle to hit the grind properly. This is arguably the hardest part of the route, and only saves about half a second and failing usually means reset, so don’t worry about attempting this until you’re comfortable with the rest of the route. This strat is the main reason this grind is ‘blind’ since the wall is in your way, and being in the air makes it hard to see below as well.

## Section 3: E and 2nd Boxes

3a: Just Turn

The exact timing will depend on how you navigated Section 2, but generally only two things need to happen here: overturn left, then overturn right. If you don’t turn far enough left you risk hitting the wall before you can turn back. If you don’t turn far enough right before falling down then you might not be able to make the next tight turn to the 3rd boxes without hitting a wall, especially since you need to time to ollie high enough to get onto the platform.

3b: TAS Jump to Platform

The TAS saves a half second over the current RTA record by jumping and performing a Christ Air directly from the E section to the platform with the 3rd boxes. Because of the wall in the way, this angle is extremely precise, improbable, and inconsistent for a human to perform, but it is a potential improvement.

## Section 4: 3rd Boxes to S

4a: Just Jump

Make sure to hold ollie a few frames or you might not clear the height to the platform with the 3rd Boxes. Try to turn early and sharp enough so as not to bump the wall. Let go of the dpad and c-left early when riding off the platform to avoid accidentally inputting a flip trick, since these can be buffered. Ideally when you ride off you’ll be facing the S at an angle where you ride in between the kickers. This merely takes practice to feel. Fastplant soon after landing to grab the S. A low ollie can miss it, partially depending on how high the S is in its bouncing cycle.

Be careful not to end too far left coming off this platform - there’s a puddle of water that slows you down if you go through it at all.

4b: Kicker Boost

If you don’t have the perfect angle, have lost speed on the platform, are using Autokick On, and/or are planning on using the quarterpipe grind (see Section 5b), you can aim for a slope boost on the far kicker. Fastplant to grab the S but an angle further left with the intent of landing down the kicker to get a marginal speed boost. If you’re already going max speed, you will clear this kicker and it is not worth attempting: going straight towards the transfer is better.

4c: Christ Air?

TAS uses a Christ Air with the fastplant on flat while grabbing the S for a tiny bit of extra speed. This timing is tight but doable for a human, though the benefit is probably no more than a couple frames.

## Section 5: 4th Boxes

5a: Straight Over the Transfer

Begin holding up early on the quarterpipe and don’t release it until you land safely on the other side. Release c-left early to avoid an accidental 360 Shove It, as this will typically cause a bail. Ideally you will clear the platform and land downhill on the other side of the ramp, then turn left to head up the ramp again towards the K. Depending on your speed and angle, you might bump on top of the platform which loses some speed. Learning the proper angle to head towards the S so you do not need to turn for the transfer is the best chance at avoiding this.

5b: Quarterpipe Grind

Depending on character, Autokick status, and your personal comfort and preference, it might be better to grind the quarterpipe from the left then jump right to transfer and break the 4th Boxes set than rising straight over the transition. If you have a special grind this is a good time to get extra points if you have any trouble reaching Pro Score on the K jump. See George’s Warehouse PB for a good example of all this with Jamie and Autokick On.

5c: K Jump (Special Trick)

If you’ve retained speed well from the transfer, you can Fastplant extremely early on the quarterpipe (only halfway up it, possibly less) and still reach the K. At the very least make sure to get a Nollie for the multiplier because this is the last chance to reach Pro Score on a good run. Spin a 540 and use the highest scoring special trick you can fit in here. Land coming straight down the ramp.

5.5: 4th Boxes to K Jump

The TAS jumps at a very precise spot with a perfectly controlled amount of speed to get enough height and a specific rotation to launch off the quarterpipe transfer after the S, grab the K on the way down, and land coming down the quarterpipe below.

While reaching the K is not too difficult for a human to achieve, I have only been able to land on the top platform of the quarterpipe, losing all timesave and then some from this strategy as I have not found a way to quickly regain speed while continuing the route to the A as normal. Not only does the TAS get to the ramp below the K faster this way, but it also keeps more speed landing there and can use this to better optimize the ending, in total saving a couple seconds over human RTA.

## Section 6: Taxi Funbox (The A)

6a: Ride Over

The sign atop the taxi has an annoying hitbox. To avoid it, ride over the side of the ramps: the A itself has a rather generous horizontal hitbox, so you can stay quite wide and still grab it. As long as you have a good amount of speed from coming down the K quarterpipe, you can turn sharp left and hit the corner ramp going up the funbox to simply ride over it. See my Warehouse PB for a good example of this.

6b: Jump Over

If you don’t think the angle you’re at will let you avoid the sign, fastplant over it instead. Another reason you may want to jump here is if you’re going too fast: riding over in that instance may not give you enough time to ollie to the platform afterward. Jump before touching the ramps of the funbox: while it’s possible to make the gap from there to the 5th boxes platform, doing so is slower. It’s possible to clear the sign with a fastplant, but I still recommend aiming to the left side of it since a low ollie can screw you up there. Careful when jumping over: if you land at the edge of the cardboard, it will stop you in your tracks.

6c: Slope Boost

In theory, it’s best to jump at a time so that you hit the tail end of the ramp coming down to get a slope boost. This is a relatively early jump, but it can be hard to gauge your speed and angle to make it work since coming down the quarterpipe often makes this a semi-blind turn. TAS also uses Christ Air off this fastplant into the slope boost.

## Section 7: The Wall (5th boxes)

Section 7a: Hard Bump

Set up your jump onto the platform so that you’re facing the wall at roughly 45 degrees. If you’ve kept speed up properly, this will set up the jump to the Hidden Tape. Kick, buffer ollie, and don’t fastplant unless you know your speed is under what it should be. Jump off the kicker connected to the halfpipe and you can make it to the Hidden Tape room.

Section 7b: Soft Bump

If you turn to the right just before hitting the wall, you can scrape it softer than the method in 7a. You’ll know the difference because the hard bump from 7a will cause your skater to throw their hands up in the air and grunt.

Section 7c: No Bump

By turning just before landing on the 5th boxes platform, you can set up the angle for the Hidden Tape jump without coming close to the wall. There’s no setup for this other than feel, which is why my full game runs use 7b but my IL 18s runs use this.

## Section 8: Endgame (Hidden Tape to T)

Section 8a: Soft Reset Buffer

Holding Z+Start just before the jump towards the Hidden Tape should allow a soft reset as you grab the T, if you can play this bit well. It might be safer to start holding it directly after the jump, but of course this is a lower time save. After starting this, you only need to turn right a little upon landing, then kick and Ollie as normal to grab the T.

Section 8b: Fastplant?

If you lose speed for some reason when landing in the hidden tape room, you might want to Fastplant to make sure you get the T. T’s bouncing cycle may affect if this is ever necessary as well.

Section 8c: Tricks Matter (Barely)

This only really applies to TAS, but using certain tricks and rotating when jumping toward the T can save a frame. Indy Nosebone seems to be a solid choice since it looks like it extends the skater’s hitbox out and to the right a bit.

## Section 9: Backups

Section 9a: No A

It only takes a few seconds after the T to loop around the back right of the halfpipe to get the A above the taxi if you missed it in your first pass.

Section 9b: Over the Pipe (No T)

If you find it hard to land in the Hidden Tape room, you can instead clear the halfpipe while grabbing the Hidden Tape, then quickly turn around to the right to jump to the T. This probably isn’t worth using over the counterclockwise run, but that jump is a notorious part of this route, so if you can tell you’re going too fast this is a decent backup.

Section 9c: Low Score

If you messed up the combo when getting the K, or didn’t get a good combo at the start, simply spin a Christ Air while grabbing the T and wait to end the level til after you’ve landed and score canceled. This only loses 1-2 seconds.

Burnside, Portland (Competition 2) Gold Guide

Inputs are listed for default N64 controls (c-up = Grindslide, c-down = Jump/Ollie, c-left = Flip Trick, c-right = Grab Trick).

If you’re running 100% or the individual level you will want to get the gold medal. The second strategy describes how to tie the current IL record, at 4 seconds per heat. Note for IL submissions on speedrun.com you need exactly 25 tapes going into this level. You should be aiming for >91.5 from the judges for both heats, though 91.0 can sometimes be enough depending on RNG for the other skaters. It takes roughly 25k points and no bails to get this. You can also use this as an easy strat for any%, with much more lenience (such as not requiring the full 720 for the special combo).

5-second heats
This strategy works regardless of Autokick Off and Config Glitch settings, though there may be slight differences in timings. I’m unsure if Tony and Bucky have a special that works for this, but Rune can use Christ Air and every other character can use front/backflip. Tap c-down to fast forward through the opening, and hold it to buffer crouch. During this, start holding L (and c-left if using Autokick Off). While not strictly necessary, I recommend using nollie or fastplant here for free extra points and safety. Jump and immediately grind[1] the edge of the halfpipe. Hold up+left, jump, press c-right to do a madonna, then grind[1] the other side of the platform. Ride off this grind.[2] Start buffering crouch even before you land here. As soon as you land, you want to turn very slightly left. You only want to hold left for a couple frames. There are two ramps in front of you: a big one on the left, and a small odd structure on the right. You should be aiming just to the left of the seam between these two. Buffer R or L and start spamming up to prepare a fastplant. You want to jump just after hitting the beginning of the big ramp to get enough height. A 720 Fastplant [special trick][3] is enough to get 20,000 points[4], and you should already have 5,000+ from the opening combo. Score cancel. Done correctly the in-game timer will be 0:55 when you pause. Optimally you want to jump above the funbox on the left to get to the end of level menu fastest, but this is a very tiny out of game time save, so don’t fret it as much as the combo. Repeat for Heat 2, then End Competition.

1 - it does not matter which grind you use here. You will usually get Boardslide, which is the lowest scoring one. Crooked or Smith grinds give more points but are not needed. There are easier ways to increase your points.

2 - you can jump off this grind and throw in a Japan Air or 360 shove it for a couple extra points, but it is not necessary for the gold as long as you get the 720 with your special trick.

3 - this must be frontflip, backflip, or a held Christ Air. Remember that you have to use the analog stick to spin frontflip or backflip. Other specials may work but I have not tested them to check if any others are sufficiently fast with a high enough base score.

4 - done properly you will have enough time to throw in a fast flip trick before the special (I recommend 360 Shove It for ease of input). This is unnecessary for gold, but if you’re comfortable with it you can use it to make up for a subpar heat or to ensure you are not burned by bad RNG. Rune has an easier time with this whole run than others, as he can use this and the extra trick from [2] to grab gold while only spinning a 540, as long as he still holds the Christ Air long enough.


4-second heats
After starting to move forward, turn sharp right. The exact timing will depend on character and Autokick setting, but you should be aiming to ride just to the left of the graffiti written inside the halfpipe. Fastplant our of the halfpipe and immediately hold Madonna. Before hitting the bridge, add a 360 Flip [1]. Use any grind on the bridge, then jump off [2]. Spin 540 degrees while doing a Rocket Air then a Benihana [3]. Score cancel, End Heat, repeat for Heat 2 and End  Competition.

[1] - I’m unsure if Tony and Bucky can use a variation of this route since they do not have 360 Flip.

[2] - You can grind either side of the bridge, but be careful not to slam into the middle of it instead of grinding. If you grind the left side, jump off to the left and if you grind the right jump off to the right. Wait a frame or 2 to jump or you might jump backwards.

[3] - You can use a 2nd Madonna instead of Rocket Air.

Mechanics Guide

This is an overview of knowledge and techniques in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 intended for speedrunners of the game.

# Game Versions

## Nintendo 64 Console

The N64 version of the game has the fastest loading times, making it the best for any% and 100%.

While not strictly necessary, this version allows spinning during frontflips and backflips with the analog stick.

The Expansion Pak enhances graphics but slows loading times, so the Jumper Pak (included with the original console) is better.

The 0% category uses a glitch exclusive to N64.

Neither NTSC version of the game (1.0 or 1.1/Rev A) has any advantage or significant difference over the other.

## PlayStation/Dreamcast/NGage

The current record set by lemonademilk for the Roswell IL is on PlayStation, and the strat used is not possible on N64, since Bob’s Burntwist takes longer to end on N64.

## Emulation

Joint’s IL record for Downhill Jam is an emulator run. Emu may be preferential for RTA IL runs due to having fewer lag frames.

Saving a replay for 0% is faster on emu, though level loading times may still make console faster.

# Controls

## Storage

Aka buffering tricks.

There is typically a 20-frame window to input a wallride before touching the wall.

A new trick can be input 3 frames after starting another, and the new one will instantly cancel the older trick as soon as it is possible to do so.

## Config Glitch

On N64, it’s possible to bind multiple options to the same c-button, most notably to map both Jump/Ollie and Grindslide to c-down for simpler walljumps and grind hops. There are two main downsides: unintentionally grinding the end of a ramp instead of jumping, and needing to Ollie off rails when riding off and kicking without crouching would be better.

To set Jump/Ollie and Grindslide to c-down, in the Controls options:

Change c-left and c-down to Grindslide, then press A. On screen, C-up will automatically change to JumpOllie and c-down to Flip Trick. Change them back to Grindslide and press A again. This time, c-up and c-left automatically switch to say Flip Trick. Change them back to Grindslide one more time, hover the cursor over c-down then press A. All 3 should now say Grindslide, but in game c-up does nothing, c-left is Flip Trick, and c-down is both Jump/Ollie and Grindslide. C-right remains Grab Trick as normal.

# Scoring

## Multipliers

Increase scores quickly by doing multiple tricks in one jump, or by spinning in the air. Each trick or spin (each 180°=+0.5 multiplier) in a combo adds a multiplier to the final score you receive from that combo. Grinding resets this multiplier.

## Point Staling

Each landing of the same trick in the same level decreases its base score.

First instance is 100% of base score, second is 90%, third 75%, fourth 50%, fifth and later instances 25%.

## Nollie and Fastplant

Press up 10 frames or fewer before releasing JumpOllie to Nollie for 200 base points.

Press up twice before releasing JumpOllie to Fastplant for 250 base points. This window is 16 frames, but each input must be within 8 frames of each other.

Pressing another direction the frame before these up inputs or anytime before releasing Ollie will prevent the Nollie or Fastplant.

Fastplants give more height and consequently distance.

More importantly than the base points is a combo multiplier for either of these, and their animations can be instantly canceled into any trick.

## Normals

Kickflip and heelflip are the fastest normals but score woefully low points (base 100 each).

The next fastest is 360 flip (base 300).

Madonna is the best normal trick to start runs off for building special due to its high score (base 525) and relatively fast speed. Benihana is 2 frames faster but a slightly lower score (base 420).

Since higher scoring normals like Varial are too long to perform from flatground, usually Fastplant Madonna is the best starting trick.

## Specials

Score enough points to build the special meter. When it’s filled, it turns yellow, grants access to signature moves, and max speed is higher. It slowly depletes, but can constantly refill from gaining enough points.

Signature moves (aka specials) have high base points, and some can be held or spun. Each character has 3 signature tricks in their kit (except Tony who has a total of 4).

Note that while Kickflip McTwist can be spun with the analog stick on N64, this does not add multipliers like normal, whereas it does for Frontflip and Backflip.

# Menu Tech

## End Run

Hitting ‘End Run’ from a Pause in N64 stops the in-game timer, but play can continue as long as a combo is uninterrupted. For IL IGT runs, its best to use this to end the timer early where possible. Note that the level will end before landing, though, so no points from this final combo will count for the score.

## Retry

When the level ends after choosing ‘End Run,’ an animation plays of the number of new tapes earned, then flavor text describing unlocked content. In a full game run, this is undesirable because these screens are slow.

It is faster to ‘Retry’ a level and then ‘End Run’ to skip both of these.

## Soft Reset

Holding Z+Start on N64 for roughly 3.5 seconds soft resets the game. If timed properly, this is the fastest way to change levels in a run since it avoids waiting to reload the past level. There is a chance of the game crashing upon a soft reset.

## End Competiton

Comps take the best of 2 heats. End Competition after the second heat to skip loading into a third one.

Unlike the other levels, it is not viable to Restart Competition or Soft Reset at the end of them, since a medal is not awarded until End Competition is chosen and Soft Resets during menus can cause glitches (see the 0% category for an example).

## Score Canceling

The game takes time to add up the last combo score to the score total. It only counts total score for the purposes of awarding tapes before a Retry or Soft Reset. After End Run, the game waits to tick up the final combo score before progressing.

To avoid needing to wait for this counter in competitions or potentially missing a Pro Score tape elsewhere, start a new combo, ideally with Nollie or Fastplant. The previous combo score will instantly add on to the total score. End Run or Retry before landing to prevent waiting on it to add up.

## Trick Tips and Score Display

Trick tips are totally unnecessary. Score Display On or Off is personal preference.

# Speed and Misc Tech

## Speed

In general, the score of a combo affects speed: The higher the score, the faster. Holds contribute towards this, but multipliers do not, and it only increments for each 100 points added. Also seems to have a point where the benefit maxes out.

Skate, land, or grind on a decline to speed up.

Skate, land, or grind on an incline to slow down.

Hold down with left or right to turn sharper.

Land tricks straight to maintain speed better.

Landing a special trick grants a temporary stat buff. This is usually more beneficial than a normal, even if the normal trick would be more points.

## Grinds

Generally, land a grind to speed up, but lose speed gradually while grinding unless it’s downhill.

Approach a rail or ledge closer to parallel to grind faster.

## Transitions and Rotations

Hold up before launching off a quarter pipe to transition over it.

Hold up or down in the air to rotate the skater’s model and change their collision detection. Use this to land flat, maintain better speed, and prevent bouncing.

## Autokick Off

With Autokick Off, use Flip Trick (default c-left) on the ground to move.

Acceleration is better with this feature turned Off, and it prevents the normal natural speed decay on flat ground.

Wait til after holding Flip to hold Ollie or go slower. Adding Ollie while turning prevents this slowdown.

If the initial kick input is frame 1, there is acceleration on frames 22-26.

Also hold down kick during frames 6-10 to get additional acceleration during those frames.

Also hold down kick during frames 22-26 to add even more, effectively doubling the acceleration rate, although it maxes out after 3 of those frames.

## Wallrides

There are 3 main factors that affect wallrides: speed, distance, and angle. More speed when you hit the wall means more momentum to translate upward. Spend less time on the wall before ollie’ing off for higher jumps as well. The closer to the wall before the Ollie, the higher the potential walljump. More perpendicular to the wall = higher and shorter walljump. More parallel = lower but farther jump.

## Skater Choice

All skaters are viable, but Rune Glifberg is the best skater in the game.

He has the fastest speed stat (7 to start) at all points in the game, tied with the other two vert skaters, Tony and Bucky. Unlike them, he has the normal move 360 Flip which is much faster than their Front Foot Impossible. All 3 of these skaters have Kickflip McTwist as a special.

His signature move Christ Air (left right grab) is ridiculously fast (20 frames, faster than many normals and possible from flat ground), has a relatively high score even for a special (base 2100), and can be held and/or spun for extra points.

All the non-vert skaters have the faster but lower-scoring normals 360 Flip, Hardflip instead of Fingerflip, and Sex Change instead of Varial. They also special grinds, and either Frontflip or Backflip.

Bob has the next fastest speed after the 3 aforementioned vert skaters (6 to start).

Jamie, Geoff, and Andrew are next fastest (5 speed to start).

Kareem, Elissa, and Chad are tied as the slowest (4 speed to start).

Skatepark, Chicago (Competition 1) Gold Guide

The strategy explained here works with every character, and is the same regardless of Autokick and config glitch preferences (though jump timing is slightly different, and config glitch arguably makes the strat much easier). Inputs are listed for default N64 controls (c-up = Grindslide, c-down = Jump/Ollie, c-left = Flip Trick, c-right = Grab Trick).

If you’re running 100% or the individual level you will want to get the gold medal.
If done correctly, this finishes each heat in 3 seconds of in-game time, the IL record.
Note for IL submissions on speedrun.com you need exactly 15 tapes going into this level.
You should be aiming for >91.5 from the judges for both heats, though 91.0 can sometimes be enough.
It takes roughly 14,500+ and no bails to get this. I suggest aiming for 15,000 so if you come up a bit short you should be OK, and so you don’t lose to other skaters RNG judge scores.

The general idea for the score is this combo:

360 Fastplant Wall Ride Boardslide Benihana Acid Drop

Points
5 tricks = x5
360 = +(x1) (each 180 adds +0.5x)
Fastplant = 250
Wall Ride = 500
Boardslide = 100 (+20 per extra frame grinded)
Benihana = 420 (+20 per extra frame held)
Acid Drop = 1000

Total points = 6 x (250 + 500 + 120 + 420 + 1000) = 6 x  2290 = 13,740
Add ~1 frame of board sliding and ~10 frames holding Benihana = 20 x 11 x 6 = 1,320
15,060 = 13,740 + 1,320

Nollie works but is base 200 instead of Fastplants 250, so you lose 300 points off the total score. Any grind works and others score higher, but Boardslide is by far the easiest and most common one to get; it’s not worth attempting others when Nollie/Boardslide works as long as you hold the Benihana long enough.

When starting, there is a quarter pipe to your left behind you. Acid Drop is a gap where you fall from the platform above the quarter pipe onto said QP. There is a box directly behind your starting point that you are not be able to grind. Far to the right of that box (when facing it) is a pillar which juts out from the platform and connects to the QP below. Acid drop only works between this box and pillar.

Tap c-down to fast forward through the opening rules and buffer left+R* to turn in place. Autokick On: [don’t let go of c-down during the opening, hold until ready to jump]. Autokick Off: [wait to repress c-down til the text is gone and your character has started the kick animation].

- you can also use L but you’ll want to switch to R before the Fastplant or you might bail. And if you make it past the grind spinning left can be awkward. It’s doable but R is way easier. If you don’t hold L or R the combo will work but you will probably get 4 seconds instead of 3 as you turn slower and there aren’t many frames to spare. The 360 is also more difficult since you spin slower in the air as well. You can buffer L/R before picking the level from Level Select, but the in game menus will lock while holding L. You won’t be able to change options or pick Continue/Restart Comp/End Run/Next Heat while holding L, but you can with R.

The trickiest part of this level in my opinion is learning when to stop turning at the beginning. If you go too far, your walljump will get you above the box and you won’t be able to grind. If you don’t turn far enough, your walljump will put you close to the pillar and when jumping down you won’t get the Acid Drop gap. I let go of left roughly when I see the edge of the QP in the camera’s view. You want to hit the wall about halfway between the eS tapestry and the edge of the QP.

As soon as you stop turning, quickly spam up to at least get a Nollie. Nollie or Fastplant is fine, but neither wouldn’t be nearly enough points because of how multipliers work. If not using config glitch*, the next part can be hard to nail: you release c-down to Nollie or Fastplant at the wall and here I recommend you begin holding down+right on the dpad (you don’t have to until the grind, but buffering it here is easiest so you can focus on timing the Wallride/grind/jump inputs). Hit c-up to Wallride and tap c-down ASAP after riding it. Hold c-up immediately after this jump to grind the platform, and again c-down ASAP to jump off. As long as you are holding down+right now, you’ll land on the QP below and get the Acid Drop gap.

- if using Config Glitch, you can honestly just spam c-down here. The initial jump and holding down+right are still important, but the Wallride/grind/jumps are easy. If not using Config Glitch remember that you can buffer Wallrides and grinds. Timing the ollie inputs is the harder part. Normally I’d recommend claw, but you should be holding R here so unless you’re comfortable using middle finger R and index finger c-up, just get used to switching your thumb from c-down to c-up and back quickly.

After jumping off the grind, hold c-right to do a Benihana (you should already be holding down+right* to get this trick, and R to get the 360). Hold the Benihana to get enough points, but you have more than enough time (the timing is not restrictive here) so make sure to let go of c-right before landing or you’ll of course bail. I let go of down+right and R at the same time I let go of c-right; you can continue holding them and still land but it might screw up the score cancel at the end. Just make sure you’ve gotten the 360 and you’ll land straight on the quarter pipe.

* - up+right may work too, but Rocket Air has a lower base score than Benihana (~-50 base, 300 in combo), so there’s less leniency. I also find Benihana easier to line up the landing with).

If you just want the IL record you can pause and end run as soon as you land on the QP to finish the combo, since IL rules only care about IGT and the timer ends here. But in a full game run using RTA timing, you’ll want to avoid the score from your combo ticking down. You do this by performing another trick. As soon as you finish a new trick’s startup animation (if you have Score Display on this is when the name and score of the trick appear at the bottom of the screen), the previous trick’s score will skip the rest of it’s counting and add to your total in the top left. Pause and End Run while still in the air or this new trick will take a moment to tick up its score. Don’t bail or you won’t get enough of a judge score for first. Optimally you can Nollie or Fastplant to Score Cancel, but these animations can be hard to confirm visually (especially without Score Display), so I typically opt for Japan Air. The exaggerated pose is easy to see. Also since it’s an up input, I’ll often get Nollie or Fastplant as well, so if I pause early it usually still works. Wait to ollie til after you’re on flat ground: if you ollie while still on the quarter pipe you’ll be angled downward and may hit the ground and bail. Pause and press up to skip to the bottom of the menu for End Run. Mash A to choose it, skip thru the judge scores and standings, and choose Next Heat from the following menu. After heat 2, be careful not to mash too long and choose Next Heat again: you want to go down to End Competition. After seeing the medal, press A to move on, press down then A to say No to Save Game?, then down and A one last time for Level Select.

To recap, in a nutshell:
Buffer R+left (+c-down for Autokick On users)
Turn ~135 degrees (start holding c-down during turn for Autokick Off users)
Release left; Don’t let go of R
Mash up for Nollie/Fastplant
Release c-down to Jump (hold down+right)
Wallride jump grind jump (Config glitch users just spam c-down)
You should already be holding down+right. Hold c-right now to Benihana.
You should still be holding R to 360.
Release all buttons after lining up the landing on the quarter pipe.
Start holding c-down + up. Delay jumping til off the QP.
Release c-down, press c-right. (Should get Nollie and/or Japan Air for Score Canceling).
Pause. End Run. (Scores). Next Heat.
As long as you get a high 14k score or more you should be in first.
Repeat for Heat 2. Pause. End Run. (Scores). End Comp. No. Level Select.
If you do everything correctly, the timer will still be 0:57 when you pause both heats, and you’ll get the Gold medal and tie the IL record for Chicago.

If you’re comfortable with this strat, you can use it in any% as well, but there is a faster route and an easier 3-second/Heat strat to get Bronze.

Soft Reset Setups

Soft reset setups:

General notes:
I move my left hand during the setup to where my middle finger reaches Z, and my thumb hits start. Pressing them both at the same time is fine, but I recommend hitting Z first. If start is pressed while Z is not you will pause. It takes roughly 3.5 seconds of holding both down to soft reset, though I think this varies slightly each level. On DHJ and anywhere else I need to, I use my index finger on c-left and c-down as needed, while my right thumb uses the analog stick for any turns required. If you realize the soft reset will happen too early or your setup is not correct, you can always let go of start then Z, and finish the level normally. 

5-tape Warehouse:
Start holding Z+Start just after bumping into the wall (after 5th boxes). Jump to the secret room, and turn a little in the air using right thumb on analog stick to line up the T jump. You will need to turn a little after landing as well. Hold c-left to start moving then Ollie for the T. If timed and setup properly you’ll reset just after getting the T.

3-tape School:
Hard part is getting score first. I use Nollie Madonna 360 Flip (any grind), (jump left) Madonna (any grind), (jump left) Stalefish to get special. Jump left and turn slightly left in the air to setup the wallride. Nollie wallride 360 Christ Air. If done properly this is over 25k, but you also need to score cancel for it to count up in time. Turn so you’re aiming directly at the tape and immediately hold Z+Start as soon as you are. Using right thumb on the analog stick and index finger on c-down, tap up up then release c-down for a Fastplant. Ollie to get the tape and the game will reset if done properly. You can wait to Fastplant until the tape jump, but doing it earlier will help you confirm you’ve gotten the score needed.

5-tape School:
Overshoot E. Turn sharp left to angle back towards the edge of the pool before you jump to grab the E. (I typically do a Varial or stalefish here, but no trick is required). A split second after getting the E, start the soft reset. You should land briefly on the flat ramp leading into the pool at an angle, and be able to quickly ollie and grind the coping of the pool. If you hit the side of the pool at too harsh of an angle you will not go fast enough. Immediately jump straight to exit the pool grind before it curves at all. Kick (hold c-left) on the ground, and you should softly bump into the wall. This bump will line you up for the final picnic grind. Make sure to Ollie late so you grind on the way up, and don’t jump above the table and have to wait to come down to grind or you may not make it in time. Starting the reset anytime before landing in the pool will probably save time. Starting immediately after getting the E is optimal.

5-tape Mall:
Make sure you have plenty of speed and special coming off the T grinds. It is best to do a simple trick or two here before the jump (I typically use 2 360 shove it’s). Before/during these, make sure you are lined up straight towards the final directory. You must Fastplant off the ramp. Immediately after releasing Ollie, start the soft reset. As long as you make the gap to the opposite ramp and don’t bump the top or front of that, you will have plenty of speed to make it in time. Hold c-left after landing so you keep the speed up. It is optimal to start holding it just before the Ollie, but I found this too difficult and possible to do early. Starting it afterwards is still a significant timesave and safe as long as you are lined up and have enough speed to make the gap.

5-tape Downtown:
A more difficult one, and I don’t have as much practice/fine tuning for it. After getting the 4th sign, turn sharp and jump over the railing. Begin the soft reset immediately after this jump. With some experience, you can have an angle that doesn’t require any turning, merely holding c-left + dpad up from here. More likely, you may need a bit of adjustment once on top of the structure to break the final sign. Speeds can also vary here based on what you did up to the 4th sign and how you hit the final transfer, so it is not as reliable.

5-tape DHJ
The hardest one since it requires movement. Jump into the water hazard after the E rail. Halfway down towards the water, start holding soft reset. When you respawn, hold c-left first, then turn right a bit. Ollie for the final valve. I believe starting anytime before you hit the water is a timesave. Optimal is a little less than halfway down, but getting the ending can vary a bit so I recommend allowing some leeway.
I have not been comfortable with the TAS turn that skips the water here so I don’t have a setup for that. That is probably about the same timesave as this setup, so if you’re comfortable with it I would to stick to that and not worry about this one.

3-tape Streets (normal building route)
Get to the top of the ramp without going too fast and bumping over it. Generally, kicking once to get up then releasing c-left and then holding up on the dpad will get the proper amount of speed. Just before you start going downhill, hold Z+Start. Immediately after hold c-left again and about halfway down start holding c-down. Jump off the ramp and if the timing is right you will reset just after grabbing the hidden tape.
