wall/door clipping with the wrench swing

Hey, I run thief and with newmantle we're able to clip thin walls and doors by swinging the blackjack and leaning+jump. Figured I'd try something similar with the wrench in this game. You have to bind mousewheel to jump to get it to go backwards. Timing can be a little aids if you're wondering.

Not sure where this can be useful though, but I remember @Mucus.Middleton was bugging me to clip the RADIATION door in engineering. If someone can give me a save or wants to try it themselves on that door go for it. Obviously the ones in the video don't need to be clipped, but were just for demonstration.

I remembered getting to the door from where I was took a grand total of like 2 minutes of work so I went there myself. Wasn't able to get it though, but feel free to still try yourselves.

This also SHOULD work with every other melee weapon in the game, but they're all probably too far out of the way to grab?

I think I did actually try to apply this to the engineering door but couldn't get it to work, wasn't sure if it just wasn't possible or if I was doing it wrong. I should note that you don't need to clip through the entire door, you just need to be able to lean through it to hit the button on the other side, and I know this is physically possible because I've done it twice, but I wasn't recording and I could never recreate it.

If anyone figures out a way for this to work it would be one of the last major skips (barring some kind of a wrong warp) along with skipping rickenbacker 1 using the grav shaft glitch.

There's still a huge issue of all the missed cyber modules you'd normally get but that can be worked out probably.

It's pretty difficult but it can be done although keyholing the door would be much easier and faster but I don't think anyone in the thief community fully understands how it works (atleast based on my experience some doors allow it more than others but i think there is some way to manipulate your chances)

Anyways to do this you need to be standing on a pot of chemicals but you can only stand on it if its not too close to any walls/door, jump on it, crouch swing lean right into the corner (the lean has to touch a wall not the door) and jump at a very small timeframe of the swing animation which depends on how high you look also I think the swing cant hit the chem pot or it wont work. you dont have to clip very deep into the door thankfully because even if you barely clip into it you can lean to the button

also this is new mantle exclusive

This is really huge, now people just have to figure out if there's any way to make it actually speedrun viable, which is tough when it's such a short run and by doing this you're missing out on some things. And thanks for the detailed explanation, it will help with execution and thinking about how the theory might be applied elsewhere.

Awesome! I was really hoping someone with more time on their hands would mess around with it a little bit. I barely remember the game at all (7 or so years since playing) so I couldn't even tell you where any items are located 😅

If speedrun.com forums are a little inconvenient, feel free to join the Thief Discord, I made a SS1+2 channel. I'm sure most people would be happy to help answer any questions about the dark engine :D

if you use a route that uses the door clip you only miss out on 20 modules (10 from each objective that you skip), to compensate i found that you can take all the modules you normally get with the normal route + 2 and a speed hypo by taking the underground path to the elevator after turning on the power (this is not necesary since you have 2 leftover normally afaik). after that you can grab 6 extra pretty quickly in the greenhouse area + skip getting one agility +12 also with the door clip you can only get duplication after undoing the research skill which kind of limits the speed boosts you use in engineering but at the same time you need less of them overall and you can probably skip some nanites

The big problem I realized after trying this myself is that you normally enter this area in a special state, where your body is extremely low to the ground. As far as I recall this is a necessary state later in the game to skip the recreation deck. While in this state, if you jump, you can no longer lean until you touch a ladder, therefor making this trick impossible with the normal route. If I'm misunderstanding something here, feel free to correct me.

Technically you might be able to do this same trick there but I haven't looked into it.

Im pretty positive you can clip the door in recreation with the wrench and clip the elevator with a relocation the forcefield after the tram ride is a different matter though

edit nvm the falling through the floor works while standing aswell
