Prior to the Swordigo discord server being created on 2017-08-29 by drgrumble, we were almost exclusicely using these forums for discussions related to the game. Due to an unfortunate incident which occurred yesterday, we almost lost all of them. However, we did manage to retrieve the most important information. This includes all comments created by all people who ever ran the game, maybe all but most likely only most of the comments created by people who did not run the game, all links and images that were used in the comments and how people interacted with the comments (meaning "X likes this"). One thing to note is that all of these messages were sent in threads. The threads were lost for good. This means that some comments might not make perfect sense as we no longer know about information provided in the thread titles. Also, some comments will seemingly relate to a comment that was sent prior to the comment found right above that. This is because some threads didn't see a lot of activity in a long time before being revived by said comment.

Putting everything into one comment doesn't work becuase it'd be too long. That's why the information is put into multiple posts.

Hi there.

I am thinking of trying a run of this game.

I know rules say no real money allowed but to get rid of the ads I need to purchase the ad-free add-on, and a coin doubler comes with that.

Are your times with the coin doubler, or without it?

Please can my any% run be verified?

Cheers.

drgrumble2016-12-20 13:51

Alternatively, if you are busy, please can you add me as a mod instead?

xEarthx2017-05-15 03:27

There should be a 100% category added. Should be when you get all achievement's, all treasures, and then finish the game (note that you can have 100% appear on the main menu but still miss an achievement)

drgrumble2017-05-15 09:47

All done xEarthx. I have made the 100% category coin doubler permitted - unless you would prefer that it be without coin doubler? To be honest, it would probably not effect the time too much as you will be getting plenty of coins in the chests anyway.

xEarthx2017-05-16 04:04

Should be disabled or split, although you are right would not make much of a difference.

drgrumble2017-05-16 09:30

I have revised the 100% rules so no CD permitted. If you wanted a 100% with CD please let me know. Look forward to seeing your run!

I have seen a list of the achievements at http://www.supercheats.com/achievements/34600/swordigo/ and some of them look pretty tough. Getting the 999 soul shards in particular could take some grinding (I did once get a glitch maxing SS at the end of the ice dwarf fight but have never been able to replicate - .

yourfaceson2017-05-26 16:06

Hey! I'm new here, and I was hoping to see how I do on any% with coin doubler, but I saw we didn't have any splits. Any chance I'd be able to get or at least someone update it on the resources tab?

drgrumble2017-05-26 17:54

Hi youfaceson.

To be honest, I have no splits prepared but I know that Zarcatus' run includes splits so might be worth messaging him on Twitch / YT.

Looking forward to seeing your run!

Thanks man, I appreciate it!

SapphireSapphic2017-07-16 06:27

Dr.Grumble, I would appreciate it if you made a 100% CD category. It would actually speed up the run more that you think and make it so there would be some grinding you wouldn't have to do. Also because I intend to start running this category with my friend.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-16 07:06

I did the math. To obtain everything in the game, (assuming you get the 999 achievement before buying the magic armor to save time, which is absurd anyways) you need a minimum of 1,629 SS. However without CD, opening every chest in the game will only net you 695, leaving the other 934 for you to get from killing enemies. That's absurd. However, with CD, you only have to get 239 from enemies, which essentially becomes a mere 120 because CD. It's just a much bigger time save than you'd think at first. Also, with CD, you can obtain both the Iron Sword and Fire Trinket before entering the first Dungeon. So surprisingly, I actually think when I start running this game, I'll have 100% + CD as my main run type, and if I wanted to start running 100% - CD, I'd have to reroute my run, at least slightly.

Ok, so a youtuber by the name of Zach Miller has already taken the top spot in two of this game's categories, however, he hasn't submitted them to this leaderboard. Are these runs only considered WR if they've been uploaded and verified?

Any% + CD in 1:21:35 by Zach Miller

100% + CD in 1:44:37 by Zach Miller

Zarcatus2017-07-16 16:00

Apparently the runs have been uploaded already but not submitted yet. However, on speedrun.com it is possible for moderators of the game like "MarcoDTL" or "drgrumble" to submit and verify them anyways. I would suggest to add a new category called "100% With Coin Doubler" because it doesn´t exist yet and should.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-16 19:24

Yeah, I tried to reach out to drgrumble to make a new 100% + CD Category, also because I want to start running it.

drgrumble2017-07-17 09:43

Hi SapphireSapphic, good point. I will add a 100% with CD presently.

drgrumble2017-07-17 09:48

Indeed, given your math I wonder whether it is even worth leaving in 100% no CD? No point in having an empty category. xEarthx, if you still want to run 100% no CD please let me know in the next couple of weeks.

drgrumble2017-07-17 09:52

Good spot SapphireSapphic, they are relatively new uploads and I hadn't seen them before. I would message Zach Miller to see if he wants to join SR.com but comments are disabled on all his videos. I will add them to the leaderboard as I can't think he would have any objections.

drgrumble2017-07-17 09:58

As an aside, this game is my favourite of all time to speedrun but I really struggle now to be able to do any runs over 60 mins as I am limited mostly to lunchtimes at work and the odd free hour here or there. If a new skip or exploit brings WR down below 60 mins I will get back in the mix but otherwise I doubt I will submit anytime soon.

On the basis that at least one of the mods should be actively running the game, either of you want to be an additional mod? MarcoDTL is not active.

drgrumble2017-07-17 10:12

Sorry, last point. I have speed-watched Zach's 100% run and checked that he seems to get all treasures, bosses etc. However, the list of achievements is a long one and I wouldn't like to say for an absolute certainty that he ticked every one. On the basis that you are thinking of running that category SapphireSapphic, if you happen to spot anything missing from his run please let me know. Cheers.

Zarcatus2017-07-17 17:29

Recently a new update for the iOS version got released. It adds an arrow to the cinematic intro sequence which allows you to skip it and with that around 50 seconds. I was assuming the Android version would have been updated too but apparently Zach Miller didn´t skip the cinematic although his run is new. My question: Does anyone who owns the Android version know if that exists? If it wouldn´t iOS should be faster now.

drgrumble2017-07-17 17:49

I have just checked and no skip function on the Android version that I can see - last time it was updated on Google Play was in 2015. Hopefully Android will get the update at some point. Until then, I guess either add cinematic time to iOS runs (if skipped) or deduct the time from Android runs. I prefer the former as all existing run times are with the cinematic and easier not to change them, but I'm easy either way.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-18 03:26

Hey, drgrumble, if you can't be on very often, I can take over mod permissions, as I'm going to start submitting commentated runs as soon as my mic comes in (probably tomorrow).

Hamburg, Germany

SapphireSapphic2017-07-18 08:11

So I watched Zack Miller's 1:44:37, and I noticed he never buys the Iron sword, nor the Broadsword, from the first two shops. He does meet all other 100% + CD criteria. Does this make his run invalid?

drgrumble2017-07-18 09:33

Thanks Sapphire. I have added you as a mod. I am on SR.com almost daily, but I think it is good to have you on board especially if you will be running the game actively.

drgrumble2017-07-18 09:38

Good spot. Tough call but rules are rules and buying those items can have a material effect on the time, so I'll reject it.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-19 07:59

So, I did make my first run attempt just now, but my screen recorder failed to work, and I didn't find out until the end of the run. So obviously, I can't submit my run due to lack of video proof, but if anyone was wondering, my time was 2:14:31. Don't speedrun games at 1 AM guys. Hopefully, I can get this to work and start sumbitting runs. Anyways, gn all.

drgrumble2017-07-19 09:28

Ouch!

drgrumble2017-07-19 10:49

I suspect there are some undiscovered glitches and thought I would mention some possible 'lines of enquiry' in the hope that with some new tech the run time might start to get towards the 60 minute mark, which would make it much easier for me to try runs.

  1. I have heard that by wearing the fire amulet on armor the Ice Dwarf can be damaged even with his shield up (untested).
  2. Whereas you normally need to fetch the vase for the ferrymaster in order to cross the river and progress near the beginning of the game, I can actually jump that gap without doing the vase quest by picking up some nearby pots and stacking them on the edge of the river. This definitely doesn't save any real time but I haven't tested whether it messes up any scripting yet.
  3. Similarly, I can actually get to the platform where you get the Mageblade without getting the pieces or raising the bridge over the lava. You need a health potion and jump over the lava, healing half way across, and can survive the trip. Unfortunately, the Mageblade does not materialise when you get to the platform, but if there is someway of triggering it without getting the pieces then this has potential.
  4. I have already posted elsewhere the glitch I got by chance whilst fighting the Ice Dwarf which maxes SS. If the effect could be replicated somehow, perhaps even on an earlier boss / mob, then that has huge potential to enable purchasing the magic armor much earlier (could also avoid the need to get chests and help with the 100% run). Video posted again below.
  5. At about 47 mins into Zach Miller's any% run he gets killed by a bat and the death animation clips him through a locked gate. There may be nothing in this because the respawn is always at the previous gate.
  6. Pots and blocks can be placed on some mobs and causes some awkward clipping / repositions them vertically. Again, probably no useful application but who knows.
  7. Generally, running whilst carrying things can seem to cause some awkward collision issues in tight gaps etc but I have not come across anything of use yet.

May be nothing useful here, but thought I would share these in case anyone finds the opportunity to carry out any further testing. If I find anything of actual use I will of course add it to this thread.

I understand that the rules say for 100% say he has to get all the achievements and treasures. Are swords actually considered as one of those?

Zarcatus2017-07-19 15:09

As of now there are 4 categories: Any% with Coin Doubler, Any%, 100% with Coin Doubler and 100%. I like these categories but I dislike the way they are displayed on the leaderboards. What about adding subcategories like "No Coin Doubler" and "Coin Doubler" so that people first decide if they want to look at Any% or 100% and then if they prefer Coin Doubler or not. Super Mario 64 did it like that "http://www.speedrun.com/sm64". The option is "Extra variables/subcategories" in "Edit Game".

drgrumble2017-07-19 15:22

I have had another look at the achievements list and admittedly there is not one that requires buying those items. I will reinstate the run, unless you had any comment Sapphire?

drgrumble2017-07-19 15:23

I have no objection to that suggestion. I will get on with that shortly.

Hamburg, Germany

drgrumble2017-07-19 18:07

Alternatively there could be an "All achievements / treasures" category and separately a 100% category which also requires that all weapons and armor be obtained. Don't mind having both but depends on what categories will actually get run. For the moment I will reinstate Zach Miller's run in 100% and if you want an additional category to include weapons / armor Sapphire then go for it (relabel the other category "All achievements / treasures").

drgrumble2017-07-19 18:15

All done.

I will try to test some of these out. Thanks, drgrumble! As for some of these, I know for a fact that while exiting the area from chest #37 (In Wasteland, where you bomb the two rock formations and push the two boxes to get to the house in the background), There is a much faster way to exit that area than bomb both formations again like intended. Instead, what I do is run to the top of the slide area, and pull out a bomb. That should push you out to the other side. Also, I have done #3 before, and will be testing out 1, 2, and maybe 5. I'll try to take video and post that whenever I finish testing.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-19 21:15

I don't think we need a 3rd 100% category. I just don't think that you would gain that much time by not buying those Items, but what do I know? I think the main reason my time is so much higher is because of skill difference than anything else really. However, if I notice that there is a substantial difference in category times, I'll make the new category.

drgrumble2017-07-20 10:02

Good stuff! Nice tip regarding the bomb method - I think I do use that in my any% no CD run, it makes me wonder whether a similar technique might have application elsewhere in the run.

drgrumble2017-07-20 10:14

Thanks Sapphire. I think a very strict / traditional definition for 100% would be "collect everything" which would include the swords etc, but on the other hand it is up to the runners to set the rules. The only reason I defined it as all treasures / achievements to begin with was because xEarthx asked for that expressly, but he hasn't as yet done any runs.

An alternative for defining 100% would be to obtain 100% per the in game percentage counter (where you load the save file). I think (I may well be wrong) that percentage is based on getting all treasures, visiting all areas and killing all bosses. The benefit in using that as the rule would be easy verification, as the runner could be asked to show their save file after ending the run, showing the 100%.

Edit: Actually not sure at all about the 100% in game percentage as I have a save just before the last boss with 95% even though I have missed quite a few treasures and areas, so likely that percentage merely tracks storyline progress.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-20 20:58

That is partially true, but I had a file that beat the game with 99% on it. I finally got 100% when I got the achievement "Explorer". Not sure if you can get 100% without some achievements, but I think you can. If you can, then we should probably should change the rules of the category to reflect what the game sees as 100%. I'll have to play around with that once I get some more time.

SapphireSapphic2017-07-22 17:30

Ok, so 1 works, should save a little bit of time during the Dwarven King fight. My recommendation is to put fire on armor, shadow on magic, and ice on sword right before the fight begins. Also note, since you're not really gonna care if you get hit, you 100% NEED a potion. Also, 2 works and I'm playing through the game to see if it has any other effects on gameplay or scripting. By the way, the setup for 2 is extremely precise, so if you miss it, I'd say just go get the pot rather than try again. This skip doesn't save that much time, guys. Another thing about it is that it may not save any time at all. You android users may want to get this investigated on your end, but on iOS version I was experiencing framerate drops and increased lag after doing the Ferryman Skip. I wish I knew why, but it fixes when you close the app and re-open it. The game is otherwise normal.

drgrumble2017-07-23 09:10

Great work Sapphire, I have tested 2 on android and there was some frame rate drop but only for one screen or so. I have not gone much further in that playthrough so I don't know if there is any later side effects either. In messing around generally I have experienced a couple of oddities but nothing useful or major yet but will keep trying stuff. All in all it's a tough game to break!

drgrumble2017-07-25 15:38

Hi guys

I emailed the dev who was really friendly and helpful. I asked him about:

  1. Jumping across the lava to the Mageblade platform before getting all the pieces / raising the bridge, and whether there a way of triggering the Mageblade without first getting all the pieces;
  2. The Ice Dwarf glitch maxing the soul shard count, and whether he thought there was a viable way of reproducing this (ideally with an earlier boss / mob).
  3. More generally, whether he knew of any possible sequence breaks, glitches, exploits or other tricks which might help reduce the speedrun time.

They replied with:

"1. I don't think there is a way of triggering it, but have you considered not getting the Mageblade at all? It is possible to complete the World's End Keep by using magic only, although it is not easy. Doing it quickly could be an interesting challenge.

  1. I can't tell offhand what is causing this although I could possibly figure it out by looking at the code. If I had to guess, you need to collect a coin at the exact same frame where the game stops for the level up dialog. Probably not easy to replicate reliably, but if this is the cause, it could work anywhere else too.
  2. I don't know of any major glitches, but as I mentioned above, skipping getting the Mageblade could potentially save time. It would make the end more difficult, but you could skip two bosses entirely. It also lets you keep keys from the previous dungeons to use later, which could further save time.

If I can think of anything else that could help, I will let you know."

He also mentioned that they are working on a new game and there should be some news coming out about it soonish, which sounds interesting!

I tried World's End with magic only and it is reeeaallly tough, and I couldn't complete it (got perhaps halfway through), but I wouldn't say it was definitely impossible. The comments about the soul shard glitch were obviously interesting too and I will perhaps try some testing as I can think of a few different potential set ups, if this is indeed the cause.

Incidentally I completed a playthrough after doing the ferryman skip and there was no obvious effect on story progression or anything else, so doubt this is an effective timesaver.

Wait a minute... If we're not getting the mageblade at all, then the only boss you'd need to fight is the final boss. Just leave each dungeon right after you get it's respective spell, since that's all you need. Ok actually, you'd need to fight The Overseer too, but, I mean... 2 bosses? Really? Another thing is what level would you be by the time you got to WEK? I think the any% run just became a lot more skill based, so good luck to anyone who wants to try this run...

drgrumble2017-07-25 17:37

Unfortunately to progress after the first boss you need to get the first piece of the mageblade and speak to the elder, otherwise when you go through the cave after using the bomb to clear some rubble for the first time, there is another lot of rubble and a guard saying "can't clear this with explosives, guess I'll need a pick axe" or something similar. I haven't checked whether there are similar road blocks connected with the other bosses.

In any case, I agree that WEK underlevelled would be incredibly tough. Add magic only into the mix and it would take a superhuman effort to get through it.

Zarcatus2017-07-25 19:06

Okay, now that we know it´s possible to complete the game without the Mageblade we should be able to skip the Fire Boss (idk its name) and the Ice Dwarf. Obviously the problem with that is the World's End Keep because any Swords but magic ones are useless. The Mageblade is one of them and I was wondering if the Magic Sword obtained by the Skeleton Lord in the purplemoore graveyard can deal damage to the Corruptors too. If it can the WEK should be a lot faster because we wouldn´t have to wait for Mana to refill (e.g. Final Boss) to deal damage.

Hamburg, Germany

drgrumble2017-07-25 21:01

I might be wrong but I think I have accidentally attempted WEK using the magic sword before, when forgetting to go to the caves to forge the mageblade, and I think the corruptors were immune to it unfortunately. Definitely warrants checking though.

drgrumble2017-07-25 22:30

Some further observations (sorry, have become a bit obsessive):

  • The ferryman skip, although not saving any time itself, does allow you to acquire a key 'in hand' by speaking to the ferryman before using pots to jump over the river. This will allow one key required later in the game to be skipped. Thought would need to be given to which key takes the longest time to get, as that one would be the best one to skip.
  • I still haven't managed yet to recreate the SS maxing glitch as it is really difficult to try and set things up so that the level up happens at exactly the same time as a coin is collected. It is also possible that the glitch might require a cut scene to commence at the same time too (that is pure guesswork based on the conditions when it happened before). One thing that might help is that picking up an XP sack dropped from a chest involves a cut small scene and obviously can trigger a level up, so all that may then be needed is finding out how to place a coin in the same spot as the XP sack after its dropped to the floor. It might be possible by throwing a pot onto the same spot and hoping that a coin pops out when it breaks. Complicated - will test!

Edit: tested collecting an XP sack (to trigger level up) and a coin simultaneously, and didn't seem to work.

Zarcatus2017-07-26 01:07

Something tells me that we will optimize the game´s route a LOT in the next few weeks. I just rewatched my pb and found out we should replace the key handed to you by the richest man in the world by the one handed to you by Ferryman. With around 3:30 that key takes the longest to collect. That alone saves a massive amount of time :)

But now that the best route skips two bosses we can actually collect two more additional keys that would be required to continue the intended routes. The more convenient one takes around 1:00 to collect. It is right after the death abuse after obtaining the Dimension Rift spell. If we go up to the Lesser Corruptor and take its key we can store that one for later on. Obviously we can skip Bishop, the Destroyer who takes around 2:00 so we´re talking about a 1 minute timesave here.

The other "extra" key takes around 1:30 to collect. It is right after the death abuse after obtaining the Dragon´s Gasp spell. If we continue taking the intended upper part after respawning at the portal and collect the key at the statue in the Chambers of The Flame we got another one we can store for later on. However, I didn´t find a key this key can replace AND save time. Probably one key in the World´s End Keep might take longer than 1:30 now that we don´t have the Mageblade anymore.

Also, what do you guys think about skipping the Magic Armor? Apparently I was the only one who bothered skipping it so far.

drgrumble2017-07-26 10:08

Thanks Zarcatus - really interesting comments! I agree there is likely to be a lot of route evolution worked around how best to deploy the spare keys.

I am really interested to see how WEK would be tackled with magic only (if as feared the magic sword doesn't work there). I can do the first corruptor fairly ok but the skeleton gate keeper is tough. When I tried WEK magic only even the smaller mobs were really tricky and it was difficult to keep up the mana levels. The saving grace is that Bishop the Destroyer can be skipped, plus the final boss stage 1 can be hurt largely by deflecting his magic balls (presuming that this is possible with non-MB swords?), and then the final boss last stage can normally be cheesed (although mana levels may again be a problem and he can deflect fire balls quite easily...).

In case it helps any (may not), I have uploaded in guides a spreadsheet I made a few months ago showing the chests and rewards, for help with routing.

drgrumble2017-07-26 12:11

In regard to skipping magic armor, WEK will be so difficult anyway that I would not attempt it without the best armor, but much respect to whoever can manage it!

Hamburg, Germany

SapphireSapphic2017-07-26 18:58

I think you should skip the Frost Trinket too. All the corruptors are immune to it and It doesn't help very much anyways. Especially if you're skipping 2 bosses.

Zarcatus2017-07-26 21:32

Oh, I already skipped the Frost Trinket. Furthermore I'm going to go through the game trying to find new timesaves really soon. Let's make that sub 1 hour possible!

drgrumble2017-07-27 00:09

Agreed regarding the frost trinket. I also wonder whether it is worth not getting plate armour, as you could then get magic armor much earlier. Overseer fight would be trickier but still doable.

Zarcatus2017-07-27 01:18

Alright, I just played through the game and skipped Ferryman, The Frost Trinket, the Fire Demon, the Ice Dwarf, all the Swords better than The Thorn, most of the treasures containing Soul Shards and some of the treasures containing xp. I only skilled "Magic" until I maxed it out and then started leveling up "Health" (At the final boss I had 6 full hearts). Although I didn´t expect it the playthrough made me believe even The Thorn is totally unneccessary for two reasons.

  1. Since I didn´t skill "Attack" a single time The Thorn only dealed 12 - 18 damage. The Needle isn´t a much worse option considering The Thorn takes almost 1:30 to collect.
  2. The Main use of a sword in general was restoring mana. The amount of mana restored is not affected by the damage a sword deals.

Getting through the game was definitely way easier than expected. I also figured out you can hit The Overseer when he´s on a high platform like here:

The only problem was the WEK as expected. That´s why I hardly agree it´s not worth getting The Plate Armour anywhere in the run but instead The Magic Armour at the very end. I actually bought The Plate Armour early on and regret it now because immediately after entering WEK I had the 400 Soul Shards that would have allowed me to buy the better Armour (that´s what happened in my pb as well). Fortunately I had 3 spare keys: Ferryman´s one, the one from the statue in the Chambers of The Flame and the one from the Lesser Corruptor. They allowed me to not only skip the part with the Golden Boulder and Bishop but also the hard fight against the Corruptor on the upper left side after entering WEK. That made WEK doable until I got to the Lair of Death. Here I got stuck at the first phase because I didn´t own The Magic Armour. :/ During hopeless attempts I figured out a convenient way to kill the first phase.

  1. Sword - No Trinket, Armour - Shadow Trinket, Magic - Fire Trinket
  2. Use Dimension Rift and fire Magic Bolts to the "earthbound form" until you run out of Mana. Then go back to the light dimension
  3. Sword - Fire Trinket, Armour - No Trinket, Magic - Shadow Trinket
  4. Restore the entire Mana bar and dodge all the attacks. Rarely attack with the sword THAT DEALS DAMAGE after he came down for a while.
  5. Repeat from 1 on The second phase remains a mystery to me...

drgrumble2017-07-27 09:38

Great work Zarcatus, I will definitely try this route when I get the time.

Just one thought - given that the key just before the fire dwarf takes about 2 minutes to get, it might save time to instead get the key from the corruptor on the upper left side near beginning of WEK - it is a tricky fight but a minor detour and potentially faster.

If the final boss 2nd stage can be overcome, any ideas what the new route might roughly clock in at?

Hamburg, Germany

Zarcatus2017-07-27 17:21

I went through the game again and got some news.

Let´s start with the bad ones:

  1. Apparently it´s impossible to buy the Magic Armour before the Plate Armour. :/
  2. Only the first phase of the final boss can be harmed by the Needle (reflecting is impossible)
  3. The Master of Chaos is also immune to bombs.
  4. It took me almost 1:40 to complete the game so I didn´t even pb.

Now the good news:

  1. Since I messed up very often I think we can definitely get times below 1:15 with the new strats, hopefully even below 1:10
  2. I agree to drgrumble that it´s losing time to take the spare key from the Chambers of The Flame because the Corruptor is actually easy to kill with Magic Bolts.
  3. We can kill the first phase easier if we manage to level up during the fight because that refills our Mana.
  4. I found a way to kill the Master of Chaos in one hit! The problem is that I only did it once and I have no clue how precise it is. Basically I camped in the corner at the very right side of the arena and used my Shadow Sword to get Mana, a health potion to refill lifes and Fire on the Dragon´s Gasp to deal damage. Suddenly I grabbed him while I was hugging the wall and he was jumping very close to me. That one time (at around 30%) he got drawn all the way into the corner and got stuck in the wall. Then he zipped down quickly and the screen started scrolling down as well.

After all the credits started playing. :D

SapphireSapphic2017-07-27 17:35

This glitch is probably going to be vital to be able to recreate, and honestly this discussion kind of makes me want to try any% or some funny shenanigans in 100%. If we are defining the category as if the game says 100% after you stop the timer, you're good, then I definitely want to try some things...

drgrumble2017-07-27 20:20

Thanks zarcatus, really interested in that glitch (and whether the grasp spell has potential glitch possibilities in other areas / fights)!

I will give the route a go but having tried a magic focussed run earlier today (ran out of time) magic seems far more skill based and tbh I struggled in places. I may try and first crack out a decent any% time using a mixed magic/melee run and ferryman to skip golden boulder, but not skip MB. Just because WEK sounds so difficult magic only.

Sapphire, I think I will be running any% CD if anything, and zarcatus seems to be focussing on any% CD too, so 100% category definition is your call. I could email the dev potentially to clarify how the game defines in game %age...

Zarcatus2017-07-27 23:38

I just noticed the release date is wrong. Actually it is March 22, 2012.

drgrumble2017-07-28 00:04

Good spot! All changed. I have made you mod incidentally, as you are clearly very active with the game / new strats etc. Let me know if you would rather not be mod.

Incidentally, just saw this:

. Probably wouldn't work in a run as the character had been maxed in this vid and I don't think Overseer's fireballs can be rebounded without mageblade, but I will test next time I get a chance.

Zarcatus2017-08-02 16:43

I think we should update our current theme. So I took some time and came up with ideas.

What do you think which background we should use?

  1. The old one

What do you think about using these icons as new trophies?

SapphireSapphic2017-08-02 18:05

I like them and think we should use either 2 or 4. Also, the trophies are guud.

Zarcatus2017-08-02 19:02

I would personally go with 4 but let´s wait what drgrumble thinks.

drgrumble2017-08-02 20:07

Good idea, a refresh would be nice. 2 is probably my favourite but like 4 as well so more than happy with that. Trophies look great too.

drgrumble2017-08-04 10:25

Just more brainstorming. I saw this video showing how the rift spell could be used to jump to normally inaccessible areas:

I don't think it has any useful application in the run because you don't get rift until late on and none of the late key-locked gates seem like they could be jumped over with this technique, but its just something else to keep in mind.

Edit: Perhaps useful to jump over the right hand wall in the Ice Dwarf arena to skip that boss fight and go straight to the last shard of the mageblade? Unlikely but I will try and check when I next get the chance.

drgrumble2017-08-15 10:54

I did a casual run through of the game using the no-MB / magic focussed route and agree that it is potentially very fast.

In case it is of interest, below is the video of my fight with the final boss first stage. It was the product of lots of attempts and I think getting a consistent strategy for this fight will be essential as it is not at all easy.

I also managed to get Zarcatus' glitch on the Master of Chaos as below. It is actually quite consistent and I have replicated it a couple of times. It seems he needs to be baited with some damage (either grasp or bolts) whilst the character is as far into the wall as possible, and fairly quickly he will do the backwards jump necessary to make him clip through the floor and die.

I will try and do a full run soon with this route :)

drgrumble2017-08-17 10:04

Just a quick one. Using rift you can skip a section in WEK as below. However, you then miss out on a key in that section. The time save is 1:30ish but as it potentially means having to do Bishop for his key (which takes about 1:20), it is marginal whether it is worth it overall.

drgrumble2017-08-23 10:18

I have found that it is possible to clip through a wall in the Forgotten Keep using pots, based on the fact that if a pot is placed against a fixed object (like another pot) it will push the player back, as below:

This skips using the key from that chest to unlock the gate below that platform, so gives us another spare key for use later in the run. It may save most time to use it in WEK so the skip in WEK using the rift spell can be used (as we would not have to worry about missing out on that key). Alternatively, the first key in Frozen Temple takes well over a minute, so skipping that would be useful.

I should add that this glitch is very easy to get wrong. Often when placing the first pot in the chest it will fall through the floor and break, failing the glitch (as there are only two pots to use on that platform). I am still toying with the set up to try and make it consistent, but it may be fairly precise.

Some other thoughts occur to me: (i) There may well be other places where wall clipping is possible with this technique. (ii) Further, it may be possible to do this to clip through gates and/or other solid objects. (iii) You will notice that soon after the clip into the wall the player transitions to the next screen/area, but not because the player has gone all the way to the right of the screen. This suggests that possibly as soon as a solid object is clipped into, the game will automatically throw them into the next area. If true, this could open up a lot of potential skips.

I have not experimented with any of this as yet beyond what is seen in the video.

Edit: One very consistent way of getting the clip in Forgotten Keep is to grab the pot just before the big swinging axe, and if you jump as late as possible your are able to make it (holding the pot) onto the platform with the chest. You then place a pot to the immediate left of the chest and then grab a second pot and place it on top of the chest. You can then grab the third pot and complete the clip. Image below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3hRqcfMGu5aRFl0MHNfUWd6TDg/view?usp=sharing I have found a few more places where clipping is possible but the character just falls to the bottom of the screen and dies. Unfortunately I think this glitch may only have a use in this one spot, in the Forgotten Keep.

drgrumble2017-08-31 15:19

Sapphire, in case it is of interest, the developer Ville replied to my query of how the in game progression counter is calculated:

"To get 100%, you need to 1) complete all the quests (quest completion is indicated by the text dialog in the menu getting dimmed), 2) collect all the treasures, and 3) visit every level, except for the hidden easter egg level with the ghost dog. The last part of the requirement is a bit tricky because it also includes all the levels that don't have a separate node on the map, specifically all the houses in all the towns and all the levels in the Great Caves where there can be several levels per map node."

Given the above, would you like the rules for the 100% category to be adjusted to fit the in game counter? It would no longer be necessary to get all the achievements, which would make the grind for the 999 coin achievement unnecessary, and verification would simply require making it a rule that the player show in their video the save file after game completion. The change would make a lot of sense to me but I don't run that category so your call.

SapphireSapphic2017-09-24 01:57

I am conflicted. While I think that Saying 100% on the end screen would be simple and makes sense, it also doesn't make sense not to get every achievement, and completing all quests invalidates all of the interesting skips that you have potential to do. I will have to test this out and get some outside opinions from other runners.

SapphireSapphic2017-09-24 03:04

So, I found a way to play Swordigo on my computer. It's the android version, just so you know, so if you're on iPhone, you'll have to shell out an extra 2 bucks to get CD. But more importantly, should this be legal? For me personally, it's going to be hard to transition from mobile to desktop, but once I got used to it, I'd be way more skillful of a player. I personally have nothing against it, but I definitely wanted to ask your guy's opinions. Also, this may be obvious, but I'm using keybinds to play. If you think maybe keybinds are a bit OP for Swordigo, you could make a rule saying you can only have keybinds for movement, sword, magic and potion (mouse must be used for everything else). Another thing to possibly think about is how this could give our community more accessibility. Think of all the PC Master-Racers. Also, going back to Android Vs. iOS, if they're playing on iOS and they skip the opening cutscene, just add 45 seconds onto their official time (I timed it using a rubick's cube timing app). Last thing, if anyone else wants to know how to set up Swordigo on PC, just post a response on the forum and I'll put up a guide (Unless it's decided that PC isn't legal for runs).

drgrumble2017-09-24 09:19

I think emulators are fine as long as they don't give an advantage. I have often felt that there is a slight advantage to playing mobile games on a keyboard / mouse interface but if you are going to not allow keybinds for trinket and spell changes then that will help to minimise this. I think emu should be permitted and if further down the line it seems as though emu is giving a material advantage then we could consider a separate emu category.

Zarcatus2017-09-24 09:50

I´d be ok with PC being allowed on the same leaderboards.

SapphireSapphic2017-09-24 16:01

Ok, Then I will Only make keybinds for movement. I will tell you though, my program does have capability to make click+drag keybinds for trinkets & etc, so maybe we should make a requirement to show keybinds before starting a run. I will certainly do this if I ever start recording.

Hi Sw0rdnes, thanks for posting and great to hear from someone else interested in running this game!

The triple jump has been the subject of some debate. The biggest issue I would take with your list is that it is not easy for everyone to do. The difficulty seems to vary across devices and on some (including mine) it is impossible. I have tested and experimented it to death and have never once gotten a triple jump. Accordingly, it's not quite the same as the other glitches

The above said, the MOC instakill is also device dependent and (for instance) much more consistent on my device than on zarcatus'. There is definitely an argument that it is unfair to allow MOC instakill but ban triple jump because both are device dependent (this is why I deliberately didn't use MOC insta on more recent runs including my all bosses).

I'm not really keen on adding a further subcategory for with / without triple jump as the boards are already over-heavy on categories and light on runs.

Zarcatus and I were chatting recently and think this is probably worth a vote. Easiest way of doing that is in the discord which you will see linked on these boards, so please join!

Triple jumping is already allowed in all categories because the community has voted for that on Discord. We just didn´t make that clear on the forums.

drgrumble2020-01-23 18:45

Im not sure how far through the game you are. If you have just got mageblade then you normally head to worlds end keep (see node 52 on map at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3hRqcfMGu5aVTJPeFl4Y3VuNTA/view?usp=sharing )

drgrumble2020-01-24 10:04

Actually, having re-read your post, I think you might have just got the first piece of the mageblade (rather than the whole mageblade), as you are taken back to the plains after getting it. What you need to do now is use the portal to travel to node 7 on the map (linked above) and take the lower path onward, using the bomb ability recently acquired. The nodes on the map are, for the most part, numbered in the sequence you follow in a normal playthrough (the only difference is that we usually travel up to 19 after getting to 15, to get the shadow trinket).

Carboy452020-05-05 19:19

Also what's 96%?

OwlDragon2020-05-05 20:08

I have mostly just run the game for fun, so hopefully someone who does run the game can confirm, but looking at the rules, cd stands for coin doubler, so it is either permitted or not depending on the category. The 96% category is described as: “Beat the game as fast as possible including all portals, all bosses and all treasures. Must finish on killing last boss and show save file (96%) at the end of the video for verification.” Seems like you have to do everything except every quest?

Zarcatus2020-05-05 22:02

OwlDragon is right: "CD" stands for "Coin Doubler". Most categories on the leaderboards (e.g. Any%, All Bosses or 100%) are divided into the two subcategories "With CD" and "Without CD" because getting twice as many coins is a clear advantage in these categories. Other categories such as "Up to First Shard" or "Boss Rush" can´t be sped up by using a Coin Doubler so those categories don´t need to be divided. 96% is similar to 100% but you neither have to visit all locations nor finish all questlines.

Thanks for posting! The first two were known of but I have never seen the third, quite interesting.

Although there aren't many active runners, there is a discord that is a little active (hopefully it is linked on the sidebar on this leaderboard). It's always good to see another swordigo fan! I would recommend you give the Up to First Shard category a try to begin with if you are interested in doing runs.

You can use LiveSplit (If you're on PC) and some other timer apps on mobile like Floating Speedrun Timer. If you don't use a timer, read the "Category rules" for specific timer start and timer end times.

SwordigoPlus Refresh mod is a mod that brings new stunning visuals and various modifications to the game, such as upgraded textures and audios, or a brand new dark interface. This mod has been created by SwordigoPlus, which is the only team out there that creates mods for Swordigo.

This modification can be easily downloaded in the SwordigoPlus App, which can be found on our website. Simply download the application, select the Refresh Mod in the selection menu and press on the green download button. Then wait for the application to download the required installation files, and after the downloading process is done grant the necessary permissions and install the mod. Make sure to restart the application after the installation process is done.
