We have discussed this a bit and I believe having top 5 times require video evidence has some support as a guideline. If you are looking to record n64 footage you will need a capture card and software. The gv USB 2.0 seems like the best value for money And open broadcaster software is a free program for recording I would recommend. I think I will make a small guide on here about getting into recording video footage for submissions.
your right I forgot that the rulings in these categories are arbitrary with the purpose of retaining "fun play". This is why when I create categories I advocate for non-arbitrary rulings when practicable including this specific category where I wanted no restrictions on unlocking all the chars in one session. I think subspace is your only option there. Have fun navigating the rules and good luck
It should be faster to do the 700vs matches for unlocking all the characters
I would need you to follow me @Ghillie_Guide to send you a DM
I would rather track VC runs on the current leaderboard to avoid the confusion and division mentioned in my previous point. A key point on context is that the VC versions are not only by default significantly slower due to version differences but also that given our existing category distinction no single category would have more than 3 very unoptimized runs that do not have any sign of competition in them. A vast majority of the VC runs(only 1 exception I can think of) are unoptimized and the result of a single session of attempts while learning the category. I have 2 people that advocated for VC runs on the leaderboards that really care about inclusion(the rest that advocated either do not care enough to discuss it with me and present their case or even respond to my message). I have been investigating version inclusion for a long time and have had about 30 hours of discussion with community members on the matter, I have changed my position multiple times as a result of these discussions from one extreme to the other. The harm being done by having 2 leaderboards is minimal atm but served as a warning sign for new runners when we had significant exposure due to a large streamer starting to run the game earlier this year, I would like to at the very least get the leaderboards consolidated. If the speedrun.com mods insist that we include VC to our categories in order to remove the old leaderboards I will do that, but the community decision and my decision as super mod for both leaderboards and a series mod is that we only have 2 versions displayed. Either way I think it is of great importance to consolidate the leaderboards and will work towards that. I feel it is also important to add that the people that have advocated for only 2 versions to be on the leaderboard are much more vocal and commited to their advocacy than the other side(which is entirely populated by inactive runners).
the post was in reference to a response to a previous request made http://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/63nr7/95. I apologize for not making this clear in my previous post, it was not even implied and a significant oversight on my part.
I have allowed for further discussion on the inclusion of Virtual Console on the Smash 64 leaderboards and proposed an alternative way to track VC in spite of my concerns of the lack of value. I have separate google documents not only tracking all runs submitted to speedrun.com but also all speedruns recorded of smash 64(as our best player does not want his runs on the leaderboard), I have reviewed them in detail and have found little to no competitive value in including VC runs on our leaderboard. On top of my own documentation and research every single competitive speedrunner that has agreed to participate in commmunity discussions has agreed on having only the US and JP N64 leaderboards, a majority of which have strong concerns about allowing any versions on the leaderboard other than the 2 agreed upon. If the decision is made in the future to change that consensus we will have the documentation available that is needed to add all VC runs ever submitted, at the moment we have runs that are on one of the tracked versions that are being exclusively submitted to the old leaderboards and that is a problem. We have a pretty inactive community atm and it's not of critical import that we delete the old leaderboards but I would like to move towards centralizing to one leaderboard to avoid confusion and division among our community. Noone feels as strongly as I do that we should track each official release from who I have discussed this with, that being said I have agreed to only having 2 versions tracked with the goal of promoting fair and healthy competition. Although I have permission from the top runners to overrule that if I think it's in the best interest of our community I have not found a valid line of reasoning that leads me to the conclusion that including other versions is the right thing to do. Sorry for the wall of text ;)
It would help me if you would explain why you want to submit to the leaderboards, after documenting all runs I can see a number of people running on VC with little to no competition and as a result generally quite unoptimal times from single sessions(taking version differences into account of course). I appreciate you and other VC runner's desire to be featured on these leaderboards but fail to recognize your motivation in posting them here. The decision was made in consensus in our community leaders group that fostering true competition between our members should be the ultimate goal. To reach this end we concluded that separating versions is the best way to foster that competition to avoid IQue being the optimal version to run on in a majority of categories(if not all). After this decision we realized that creating a category for every version as well as our difficulty and character separations would create an enormous amount of categories that would be devoid of any submissions. We could always create placeholder runs for all of the versions other than pal(none of the main runners have or use pal) but concluded that would take our efforts away from achieving our goal of true competition. I have recently been more open to the idea of allowing all of these categories to be created and have seen the points on both sides but still cannot conclude that we have made the wrong decisions in regards to the versions that should be posted here. I feel it is disrespectful to speedrun. com continue utilizing 2 leaderboards for these purposes and would like to work towards having only one leaderboard site in the best interest of our community. I think an ideal solution might be to include another category distinction for PAL N64 and a universal VC category, this would still leave a number of categories with no submissions but would also give players a place to post VC runs. Thank you all for your patience on this matter
The old Super Smash Bros. leaderboards is ready to be deleted, I have finished recording and transferring everything and had another person check over to make sure we didn't lose anything.
I have been given full mod on the old leaderboards speedrun.com/ssb64old and am currently documenting all run submitted to both before changing to the variable system proposed by zewing and removing the old leaderboards from this site. I am interested in adding all the versions to the leaderboards but we are concerned about the potential for drama around doing so. The main concern about adding every version is the IQue Player but I don't see a problem with adding the PAL N64 and all VC versions to this site, the decision was made to include only the 2 versions before the variable system was implemented on speedrun.com. If you feel strongly about having the other versions(even if you don't agree with IQue being included) please let us know what you feel in regards to this manner and we will attempt to gauge what the proper course of action is. The decision was made as a result of the system speedrun.com was using to display ILs and now the site' capabilities have changed
That is exactly the workaround we were thinking of using, I don't see any other option. We will need 5 decimal places, thanks for the headsup anyways
I am a mod for wave race 64 and was wondering if there is any way to have seperate IL categories display different measurement standards. We would like to add stunts but currently would have to submit scores in timer to represent score, is there a way to display the times for different IL categories in whole numbers? I am sorry if this has been asked already I searched a good bit and couldn't find anything
I have released a Video Tutorial Series for Wave Race 64 on Youtube, Check it out and if you have and feedback or questions please let me know, Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlAkSmzMhm7piZCN5zWp0RjKQEpRUnZRY
If you look in the guides section I outline this in detail along with the rest of the category if you haven't looked at that already, should give you enough information to get sub 6 mins after a couple weeks of practice and learning. Take Care and Good Luck
Can we please delete the old leaderboards, everything of value has been transferred and every day we leave the old leaderboards up is another chance that someone else will have a negative reaction to our community
The original reasoning for creating the Very Hard 1 Stock Category was to create the most difficult possible category in 1p mode for a challenge. This category was first run in 2005 and has been run by over 20 people since with different characters, the categories are well established and while they don't make any sense at first glance there is enough categories for everyone lol. Anyone interested in the history of smash 64 speedrunning can check out documentation I did a while ago on the subject here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uKliAuqUowB9yZMf138A-rAVlIIxk10VVynPLfjroqg/edit
We would indeed lose the table organization, it is fine without any changes. I do think having JP is good but the categories could be removed quite easily. It it important we remove the old leaderboards as it is important, I would be on board with removing them now. I believe because pikashy's runs are on the old leaderboard some people think it's the better one(as it does have better runs on it objectively).
We need to make these changes before removing the old site to preserve runs done on other versions IMO, I don't understand how sub categories are implemented on the site and I am not sure when I can get around to it. I would like if someone else stepped up and at least started the process so I can just do the dirty work transferring runs.
That is the last leader board posted on the old speedrun.com leaderboard for ssb64, this isn't the best way to transfer forums but it will work. I am going to create new threads of relevant discussion with quotes from these old forums because some of them had a lot of work put into them(shoutouts to pikashy) and will continue to be topics to be discussed in the future.
