How to determine which version of Unjeashed you are playing!
Updated 2 months ago by brokenhyperlink

Since becoming a mod and trying to unify the Java boards a bit more, I’ve realised that I hadn’t made a version guide for Unjeashed as there are close to 100 releases of multiple phones in multiple languages, however, these can be grouped into 4 main categories. Typically you can tell from the file size but Java is a little bit quirky with a lot of the versions. You could get in contact with someone who has the correct file structure, but if you have just legally obtained it, you'll need this guide. Don't be alarmed at the different aspect ratios. So long as it hits the marks for one specific version, the resolution doesn't matter.

This original picture from Goalringmod27 is handy, however, we can break this down even more.

128kb (Low-End)

This is the lowest version of Unjeashed. As of publishing this guide, there are 13 known dumps that fall under this category. These are the key identifiers:

  • Game is approximately between 110kb to 145kb
  • Resolution is typically between 128x128 to around 176x120
  • There are only 7 stages; these being Chun-nan Act 1 - 4, Apotos Act 1 - 2, Egg Devil Ray
  • Each level is extremely short, usually lasting no more than a minute if you know where you are going
  • In Chun-Nan Act 1, the "flags" are stones with designs in them with a mountin sometimes in the background

300kb (Mid-End)

This is the most popular version of Unjeashed. As of publishing this guide, there are 66 known dumps that fall under this category. These are the key identifiers:

  • Game is approximately between 240kb to 440kb
  • Resolution is typically between 128x160 to 352x416
  • There are 8 stages; these being Chun-nan Act 1 - 2, Apotos Act 1 - 2, Egg Devil Ray, Spagonia Act 1 - 2, Egg Dragoon
  • There's a better split of Hedgehog to Werehog stages
  • In Chun-Nan Act 1, there are no flags on the ground nor is there any mountains in the background, only clouds

600kb (High-End)

This is technically the highest version of Unjeashed. As of publishing this guide, there are 38 known dumps that fall under this category. These are the key identifiers:

  • Game is approximately between 550kb to 1,265kb
  • Resolution is typically between 176x220 to absolutely massive lad
  • There are 11 stages; these being Chun-nan Act 1 - 3, Apotos Act 1 - 2, Egg Devil Ray, Spagonia Act 1 - 2, Mazuri Act 1 - 2, Egg Dragoon
  • In Chun-Nan Act 1, there are yellow and orange flags on the ground and several mountains and building in the background
  • In Chun-Nan Act 2 as the Werehog, there is a long sloped section Sonic runs up about half way through the stage where the 3D aspect would be in 3D versions

1mb (High-End with 3D)

Whilst practically the same structure wise as 600kb, these versions have the inclusion of 3D that makes it harder to run on emulator as well as technically making some stages of Unjeashed longer. As of publishing this guide, there are 23 known dumps that fall under this category. These are the key identifiers:

  • Game is approximately between 750kb to 1,050kb
  • Resolution is typically between 240x320 to absolutely massive lad
  • There are 11 stages; these being Chun-nan Act 1 - 3, Apotos Act 1 - 2, Egg Devil Ray, Spagonia Act 1 - 2, Mazuri Act 1 - 2, Egg Dragoon
  • In Chun-Nan Act 1, there are yellow and orange flags on the ground and several mountains and building in the background
  • In Chun-Nan Act 2 as the Werehog, there is a 3D tower Sonic runs around about half way through the stage where the slope was in the non 3D versions

And that's the end of the guide! Any issues, feel free to contact me on this post, discord, twitter, etc, wherever is easiest for you. Enjoy Sonic Unjeashed!
