Lack of Skill Based “Speedruns”

Hi, I have been speedrunning subway surfers for about 8 months now and I have just recently been submitting runs here. I have tried almost all the speed run categories and have realized that almost all of them are 90% luck based. They all require you to be lucky and find a certain power up quickly, or get chains of power ups, or get lucky on the section spawns during a run. While the nature of subway surfers is inherently RNG based, I believe we can add more “skill” based speed run categories that will make doing speedruns more enjoyable. The current “No Coins” category is a good example of more skill based speedruns. While ultimately it is up to good RNG to get a good run, it also requires good knowledge of section spawns, movement tricks, and over all more planning to your run. If we could add more categories like this I believe it could make speedrunning this game a bit more interesting. One idea I have is, “longest time in air”. This could have a few subcategories such as hoverboards and no hoverboards. I believe we can think of new, more interesting speedruns for us to try out. Please leave your ideas bellow. Thanks

Edit: Add another subcategory “no powerups”. This would lower some of the RNG with getting jet packs and pogo sticks and such.

Agreed. Almost all of the cathegories(especially all powerups) are completely random based. I play only in No Coins No Hoverboard cathegory because it's the one, that takes you a lot of skill, and not that random based. Also I think it's a very interesting idea to add longest time in air cathegory, that would be pretty fun to play.

I wanna talk about longest time in air cathegory. I've tried it couple times without hoverboard - it's complete random. But with fully upgraded shark hoverboard it's pretty fun to play. I already submitted this run on my youtube channel, check it out if you want.

Also I found a glitch, that lifts you into the sky. There are 2 ways to perform it. First - you just jump off a barrier immediately after landing on it, and for some reason game just throws your character high into the air. It works pretty rarely, and I haven't figured out the technique of doing it, but I managed to do this like 6 times. Second is the tunnel variation, but unlike the previous one, here you also need to have super sneakers. By looking at the performance of the glitch, it seems like your character accumulates the jumps that you've done in the tunnel, so when you get out of it, game add all of these jumps into one and lifts you high into the air. Btw, I think that these glitches only work with hoverboards with smooth drift upgrade.

Hello, sorry for late answer,

The lack of skill is true, for example, the Power Jumper category is entirely based on luck and you can only get close by some frames, so you just need to be lucky. But those categories are interesting because you can reach perfection because at some point there won't be room for new improvements.

New categories involving more skills would be really interesting to see because it is way more interesting and funny to play sometimes. Also, if new glitches could be implemented in some runs, it'd be pretty interesting since it'll make the runs way more captivating.

I'm not against new categories, and I am in favour of it. Longest time in air looks really cool and since both of you seem to like it, there is a chance that other people are for that. Not much to say, this category will truly be added, is there a limit to the glitch though, like that could restrict the category in any way ?

If you have any ideas, I would be glad to know. Have a nice day :)!

Thanks for the response! This category will obviously need to be labbed a bit but from my testing I haven’t found any way to infinitely do the run but I have only been running it for a few days so we will see. I do believe that this category has a lot to be explored and I am exited to see this be added soon!

I have just posed a new Forum Posted dedicated to the specific Time Off Ground sub category. This forum post should still be used as a discussion place for new possible categories while all discussions about the Time Off Ground category should move to the new Forum post. Thank you :)

I read what you are requesting and there are things I like and don't like. This game is mostly RNG and it's super linear and basic which makes speedrun glitches minuscule. I like how you are trying to add more skill in categories but these are missions where you want to have a higher score instead of speedrun. opening up a new non speedrun category with a lot of sub categories when there's multiple dozens of other missions can be like opening a can of worms. People do seem excited to show more skill and less luck but the mission area is more how long can you go instead of how fast you can do it. I'm not really for this but if Lucas and everyone likes it then I don't mind Lucas taking over for this area.

I do agree with you hsblue. I would much rather have actual “speed” runs instead of runs that set longer and longer times. But this game inherently has no speedrun essential mechanics and is quite literally an infinite running game. So while I would much rather have actual speed runs I still think we can push the mechanics of subway surfers in a different way. If someone comes up with a good actual “speed” run I would be more than happy to run it and see it added.

I think it's really important to have some skill based cathegories. The people that run Misc. or All powerups cathegories will never find any bugs, cool features, glitches. The whole point of skill cathegories like NoCoins is to get better at the game, to experiment, to try to break the game, to find glitches. All of that will make runs less RNG, and make players a lot better at this game.
