The discord announcement says the (community? mods? runners?) received “backlash from other communities about the way we handle runs being verified.” I’d like more detailed information from a mod involved in the decision, though.
but srsly though it sounds kinda weird that you change the rules cuz other communities tell you to, I mean "we" are a community on our own so we should make our own rules imo.
this is also why I think this is a bad idea, the popularity is probably, especially for a game that mostly attracts new people like SMO, going to suffer under these conditions. I also have a 1:33 and don't feel good about having to setup my stream EVERY single time I want to do a run
Is the only way to record with a capture card, or can anyone recommend cheaper ways to do a video?
I don’t have one and I also don’t have a screen with which to play docked :( didn’t expect to need videos anytime soon as my PB is like 2h lol but I still have enjoyed running until now, it’s my first ever speed runs.
You could use a webcam or phone camera for the most part they mentioned somewhere. There are some suggestions for cheap capture card setups on the discord.
Using a webcam is probably the best option cheap otion if yuo don't want to pay 100-200$ for a capture card. But I agree that a video proof of every run isn't the best idea. it only reflects the image that the mods are lazy. No offense, it is just how it looks like.
The reason is because we were getting inflated numbers of player count due to the fact that we were verifying fake runs (in some cases, them being obviously fake).
Your phone or a $10 webcam is perfectly acceptable for video proof.
The mods aren't lazy for wanting video proof, if anything they have more on their plate now as they have to watch a fuck ton of videos.
You can record it with a phone. Also if you cant be arsed to record it or if you have a bad time, just dont submit to the leaderboard. Easy
It's 2018 and capture cards are getting cheaper and cheaper. Hell, I currently just downscale my HD capture to AV and use my Retro capture card...costs like $70 maximum. You do not need internet to capture your game...do it offline. The mods accepting webcam/phone footage is more than what quite a few other boards will accept.
If you want to claim a time in a game, that's one thing. If you want to put your name/time on a leaderboard next to other names/times for comparative purposes, there should be minimal proof that you accomplished that run. I'm all in favor of this decision by the mods here.
