Optimal 1-1 Guide
Updated 1 year ago by australian

Over the past day or so I have been trying to refine the 1-1 route -- and I believe I have done so and I will share with you all how to and also some strategies in order to become more consistent.

For the most part, the float blocks are pretty much useless in 1-1 since they make Mario move slower. So I would suggest you try to avoid them as much as possible. You can see how they make him move slower in all the runs as of now except for mine on the leaderboard. I opt for a faster route by wall-jumping on the pipe at the beginning of the level, this saves about 1 in-game second, but if done perfectly just barely 2.

After which, if you are able to wall-jump over the pipe a firebar spawns in pretty much immediately just ahead of it. The intention was for the player to use another float block to avoid the firebar -- but I found out if you start on framerule 13 and you hit the wall jump on the pipe the firebar does not spawn in immediately and you have enough time to pass the section that needed Mario to float over the firebar, (I set a -4.35 pre-timer to my splits and it starts on framerule 13). This saves about 8 in game seconds if done w/ the wall jump.

What I have seen in the other runs on the Any% leaderboard, and in my older runs I am guilty of doing the same thing -- YOU CAN GO DOWN THE PIPE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TWO GOOMBAS... idk how i didn't know about that but okay man. It skips pretty much the entire level.

The Underground section in 1-1 is very different to the standard 1-1 in the original Super Mario Bros. -- In my TAS that i made a few days ago (which is now outdated), I opted to go for a wall jump over the large wall that cuts off the two sections of the underground. I have no clue whether or not this is RTA viable, but it is a possibility if it is needed. However, in my PB, I just use the float block to fly over the wall. I time my pressing of the right arrow key to move Mario forward in junction with Mario's sprite being between the A in "MARIO" and the 2nd 0 from the left on the score bar. If done correctly mario should just barely nick the top of the wall accelerating Mario faster than if you were to just casually glide over the wall.

The rest of the level is as the same in 1-2. Mario comes out of pipe, then you run to the flag pole and perform a FFPG using the float block. If your underground is inadequate just perform a fast accel or just BlessRNG that you get a really clean FFPG.

Thank you for reading if you did, and I hope this helps.
