~ Default controls ~ ESC --- pause WASD --- move SHIFT --- sprint U --- randomly die to ghosts for no reason F --- turn on/off flashlight SCROLL --- adjust intensity of flashlight E --- interact (open doors, pick up items, save at save points) TAB --- open "inventory", then SCROLL to read the scraps you've collected *Note that you don't have an inventory until you pick up the first scrap **It's highly recommended to change the inventory key from TAB, but you don't have to
~ The Route ~ You must collect all scraps in the open-world segment in order to unlock the Factory, all the way up north. The game will tell you there was a key behind the final scrap. After collecting the two scraps in the Factory, the Lake will open, which is where the game ends.
~ Open World ~ There are nine landmarks in the open-world section of the game: Green Inn ("House"), Lookout, TV, Pine, Bunker, Cabin, Outpost, Statue ("Chapel"), and Poison Plants ("Plants"). There is always exactly one scrap to collect in each landmark, although the exact position of the scrap within that landmark can change each time you start a New Game. In version 1.1, they also added a new landmark to the open-world section called the "Death Camp." You can see icons for most landmarks on the many maps scattered throughout the park.
~ Versions ~ There are three main versions of the game. 1.1 is the latest release, but is slower than 1.0 because of the addition of the Death Camp scrap. There was a pre-release version of the game titled "Haunt: The Real Slender Game" which is a complete meme because it's literally unbeatable. The devs left in an invisible wall right before the end of the game. There's no known way to reach the boat, even with glitches. Technically, there is a second version of the same pre-release game, with higher Slender aggro and a dimmer flashlight, but it's still a meme.
~ Slender ~ The ghost of Mark Slender spawns into the game after you collect one scrap. He teleports around when you're not looking at him, and, if you get within a certain range of him for too long, and he can see you, he'll start to charge you. If he ever gets close enough to grab you, it's game over. In version 1.0, he gets more aggressive more quickly if you also look at him while within range. As you collect more and more scraps, Slender will teleport more frequently, even into your line of sight, and will start chasing you sooner. Slender despawns when you collect all but the last page.
~ Difficulties ~ Noob: You have infinite flashlight and daytime, but you cannot collect any photos. Therefore, in order to do 100% runs, you have to pick a higher difficulty. Gamer: Slender has increased aggro, and the game gets darker over time. Paranormal: Slender has even higher aggro, the game starts at maximum darkness, AND there are no save points or "you are here" markers on maps. *When you beat the game, it automatically starts over on the next-highest difficulty. **Maximum stamina is reduced by 50% for each difficulty above Noob, but not stamina regeneration.
~ Sprinting ~ You start with max stamina (40s for Noob, 20s for Gamer, 10s for Paranormal). While not sprinting, you automatically regenerate stamina at the same rate you spend it, up to the maximum. While below 5s of stamina remaining, your character will bob their head up and down like a madman. If you hit 0 stamina, your character breathes heavily and you cannot sprint for the next 4 seconds (although you still build stamina, so there's no time loss). The only way to lose time to stamina management is by walking with full stamina. Sprinting is always exactly twice as fast as walking, except when moving backwards/diagonally backwards. Moving forwards, sideways, or diagonally forward are all the same speed, but turning the camera and moving diagonally or sideways can help manipulate Slender's position to your advantage.
~ Inventory Glitch ~ While the inventory is open, your "sprint" state and your "stamina" value are frozen and cannot change. So, if you hold shift when opening the inventory, you will be sprinting the entire time the inventory is open, whether you hold shift or not, and you will also not gain or lose stamina over time. The only trade-off is that now you can't really see where you're going. This glitch is banned in glitchless categories, i.e. you are not allowed to open the inventory at all.
~ Save Points ~ You can save the game at typewriters, located in the Green Inn, Bunker, and Outpost. There is also one at the entrance to the Death Camp in 1.1. Saving, Giving Up, and then Resuming the game takes about ten seconds RTA, but refreshes your stamina to full and resets Slender's position, as well as acting as a backup in case something goes wrong. Saving and resetting like this is allowed in all categories, and never wastes time if you do it fast and with low stamina.
