Timing and Rules
Timing is just like normal Super Mario Bros. The timer starts when 400 appears on the first level (1-1). The timer ends when all sprites go invisible after touching the axe in 8-4. You don't have to split at the exact frame. The mods will retime your run as accurately as possible. If you record at 60FPS, the margin of error is probably a millisecond or two, but 30FPS will cause your retime to be less accurate.
Framerules: It’s a rule where you can only save or gain time in increments of 21 frames (0.35s around there) Each end of level could be imagined as a bus stop, the game checks if you got in the bus in time or if you missed it. If you did get to the “bus stop” by saving 21 frames the bus takes you to the next level, if you don’t, well you have to wait for the next bus to take you to the next level.
For rules, an obvious one is no spliced/TAS runs will be accepted on the leaderboards. Another rule is that a reset must be shown in the video. Me or another mod will decline your run if a reset is not shown at the start of the video.
#Levels
#1-1
This level is an easy level. Some easy jumps are at the start of the level, and you can pick up a mushroom at the block after hitting the Parakoopa if you want to save one for late game.
There's a part that can result in time loss at the very end of the first room, before the bonus pipe. If you don't press left at the right time, you can lose as much as 1-3 framerules off of just that section.
After that, there's a bonus section. Just run through this section.
The final part of the level can be confusing. There is a fast accel you can perform here, but it saves less than a framerule. If you collected the mushroom, getting to the end without bumping a block here is quite hard. If you're small, it's a lot easier.
After this, there's stairs, which you could lose time on due to different jump physics. And, after hitting the flagpole, you go to 1-2! #1-2 The beginning of this level is slightly different from normal 1-2. It may actually be easier than 1-2 in normal SMB. You jump over 2 Goombas, and then do 2 jumps to get to the highest area available at this point in the area, then do a small jump to land on a platform.
From here, you can do 2 small jumps to clear the Goombas. After this, you can do pipe jumps, but you'll have to get used to the higher jump physics.
After this, you can go to the warp zone the same way you do in SMB. #4-1 This level is just as easy as it is in SMB1. It may even be easier, because you have a lot more time to clear the pipes due to the higher jump physics. It is important to note, that there is a setup for 4-1 FPG found by SRC user xx_420_blazit, that has been pulled off by KingOf_JonnyBoy in practice. And here is a tutorial for the setup: It shows how to do the manipulation for the setup at the very beginning, and at the end it shows different ways to get lined up for the actual FPG.
This level is identical to 4-1 in SMB1. #4-2 This level is identical to 4-2 in SMB1 [and so is every level after it].
You can use your favorite bump method here. For new runs, I recommend 4 bump, and after a few runs, I recommend 3 bump method. For people unfamiliar with the bump method, there are two exit zones: The coin cash and the warp zone. If you backwards jump in to any block you will be pushed an amount of pixels, your x position has to get pushed 20 pixels in order for the warp zone to still load and the coin cash to not load. If you hit the vine block the pipe you have to enter will not have the pirhana plant. After the 3 bumps you have to stop at the pipe, if youre too far to the right on the pipe, the run is over. So just jump on the pipe and press left to slide in to stop. You will be transferred to the wrong warp
#8-1 This level is easier, due to higher jumps eliminating the need for some pipe jumps. For example, the first pipe jump is skippable, but it would lose time in SMB1. In SLB, you can full jump onto the next pipe.
There is only 1 pipe jump that saves time in this level, and it’s the third pipe jump after the goombas.
Judges: You get good judges if you hit the buzzy beetle on the perfect frame. If you do hit it right, you can hit the starblock before the third pipe jump (set of 10-12 bricks) anywhere you want. If you dont hit it the perfect frame, the judges will not be happy, and you will have to hit the star block at the 1st frame.
#8-2 This level is about the same difficulty.
BBG is harder, though.
#8-3 In this level, it depends what framerule you’re on. For new players, just pray that you got the right pattern. You may be able to jump over some Hammer Bros. that you can't in original SMB, but that may not be right.
#8-4 Exactly the same, but you can do some things different. The first room can be executed exactly the same as in SMB1. The second room has a different walljump you can do. Kinda similar to the SMB1 PAL version, you can jump off the pipe before the walljump pipe and walljump from the top. The third room could be more difficult to get a fast turnaround, due to higher jumping. The fourth room can be executed identically to SMB1. The fifth room can be executed diferently, and that's what you usually see WR holders like KingOf_JonnyBoy do.
#Fastest Time Estimate (Humans) 1-1 - -0.35 current WR - Mavpole FPG (one framerule/0.35s) 1-2 - -2.05 current WR - 1-2 clip (five framerules/1.7s) 4-1 - -2.40 current WR - 4-1 FPG (one framerule/0.35s) 4-2 - -3.10 current WR - 4-2 clip (two framerules/0.7s) 8-1 - -3.45 current WR - Good judges (one framerules/0.35s) 8-2 - -4.80 current WR - BBG + good 8-2 (four framerules/1.4s) 8-3 - -5.15 current WR - Mavpole FPG (one framerules/0.35s) 8-4 - -6.65 current WR - Backwards walljump, perfect water, perfect turnaround, fast accels (1.5s)
This would bring the current WR down from 5:11.516 to a 5:04.866. This time in unlikely to ever happen, and would be EXTREMELY difficult to pull off, unless so way easier strategies were found for FPG or 1-2 clip. Note that this is just a rough estimate, and isn't entirely accurate. Tutorial by Loopie and Epicness. (time over current record estimate edited by KingOf_JonnyBoy) [small edit by Epicness: You MUST imagine the framerule as a bus stop?] [edit by Epicness: Maybe this will make formatting better?]
