Stair skate speeds on console.
8 years ago

I got to borrow a mate's arcade stick that had 3 programmable turbo speeds to test out how much time you can save depending on how fast you can mash. 5/sec, 12/sec and 20/sec are the speeds I could test and went about recording every set of stairs at 12/sec as the expected speed at 100%. I tested all 3 speeds at the longest stairs in the game, the ones leading to the Crimson boss, and found that: 5/sec: 6.75 seconds. 12/sec: 4.5 seconds. 20/sec: 4.1 seconds.

So compared to 12/sec, 5/sec is ~50% slower and 20/sec is ~10% faster. Bear in mind, those numbers are averages based on what I thought was the start and end frames of the stair skating. Different people will have different visual cues, so those numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. Also, this is on console, which apparently caps at 15/sec, and Raw Derps breaking that cap on PC by clearing the Crimson stairs in 4.0 seconds supports Carci's claim that PC can register 15+ per second.

Chris's Love Triangle Ending, Normal, has 90.5 seconds of total stair skating if you can hit 12/sec consistently. With the above values, 5/sec is estimated to lose 45 seconds and 20/sec (or 15/sec) will gain 9 seconds over the entire game. The total stair skating comes to: 5/sec: ~135 seconds 12/sec: ~90 seconds 20/sec: ~81 seconds.

Losing 45 seconds is nothing to sneeze at so PUMP THOSE FAPPING MUSCLES. On the other hand, if you can't hit 15/sec I wouldn't worry about it; 9 seconds is 2 zombie grabs/defence items plus change and any number of other time losses. If you can hit 10-12, I think you're fine. Just focus on pulling out an excellent performance. Further, 15 is no joke and unless you can consistently hit it gaining all 9 of those seconds is pretty fucking hairy balls hard.

So far, I've only done Chris, The Bestest Ending, Normal. Since all the frame data is already done his other categories is just a matter of adjusting numbers. For Jill I may record at one point to make sure the skating isn't affected by her slower running speed. Maybe.

Also, I have decided I hate numbers.

Thank you so much for taking the time to put all of that together, kind sir! ;D Even though you struggled with 4th grade elementary school algebra! ;_;

I'm gonna have to try to extrapolate what's the time loss on my meager 8-9/sec stair skating. ;_;

May I say this obsession with hairy balls is very unhealthy D:

Nicely done :)

And I think the cap is half the framerate, which is why it's faster on PC (60fps), the most optimum being 1 input per frame (by input I mean press or release, not both every frame). I tested that with an input injector which was doing perfect 30Hz smashing and Jill was going up/down the stairs like a racing car on PC lol.
