The default layout for this game on controller has both pitching and strafing on the right stick. However pressing a diagonal on the stick will NOT give the maximum output possible of both pitching and strafing.
To solve this issue it is possible to bind one or the other to a different button, or to remedy this diagonal input via this guide here:

This guide may however present an outdated ui once going over the controller configuration section. As such, once you have steam controller activated you may reffer to this video instead in order to fix your diagonals:

As of June 11 2024 the game received a major update 'v1.31' that added a new set of tracks "Vertex V1.31585598240". Moreover this patch apparently removed 'over 200 shortcuts'.
