Resident Evil 2 (Ps2) Long load times

Hello everybody. I am fairly new to the speedrunning scene and thanks in advance for any replies and help i receive.

On that note i have a quick question about Resident Evil 2 (original version) on the ps2 with having really long door load times as opposed to the load times i have seen in the vods of other runners. i am running the american version on a ps2 with the disk speed set to fast and im just not understanding as to why my load times can be as much as 1-3 seconds slower than others. I have compared it to both the american and JPN versions of the game.

I have the same problem on the Japanese version. Especially on doors that change the Stage_ID like going up and down the stairs in the west part of RPD.

Think most people would run any game on the 90K model of the PS2 which I plan to import from Japan.

Whatever you do don't compare anything against Trevor's Claire A run, the time of that run is dodgy as fuck

  1. Specific models of PS2 load faster than others.
  2. Lens condition will affect your load times.
  3. Disc condition will affect your load times.
  4. Dual Shock version is (supposedly) faster than the Original Biohazard 2 version.

Overall Playstation Disc is dodgy as fuck, as Dara has said, as is Playstation speedrunning in general. Trevor's Claire A is a perfect example of this. My advice would be to avoid Playstation speedrunning altogether, but if you really want to continue with it then my advice is just do not care about your times in comparison to the top times. Unless you're willing to put money down, you will not be able to get WR.

There's also some weird issue with PAL console using import software affecting the gamespeed of US/JPN versions because of how PAL consoles work. This isn't strictly just Playstation and RE2 (happens with GCN too) and that just puts me off speedrunning disc more, personally.

Thanks for the input you guys.

A runner also told me last night that those long door loads shouldnt matter too much because the IGT lags on those loads because it is frame based.

As for the disc condition both the Leon and Clair disk dont have a single scratch on them. this new information puts me down because i literally just bought my new copy yesterday hahaha.

I really want to run the PC version but i dont know where to get it. Thanks again you guys

I don't know whether posting this is against the rules but

It's hard to say if the IGT on Playstation console lags with the framerate, because the way we test it is with emulators and emulators work very differently to consoles.

In emulator, the game state itself is tracked by the number of frames drawn. I'm not sure that's the case on RE2 console, at least. Otherwise, longer loads wouldn't affect the timer as the game state isn't progressing when the disc is being read.

We can tell this is the case on PC because when forcefully slowing the framerate and pausing the game we can see the timer pauses. On console, doing this isn't possible.

Is Trevor's Claire A time way too low, I guess? I see he's a few minutes faster than second place. I haven't seen the run since he released it and I don't speedrun the game myself, just curious.

i've determined that the most likely reason Trevor and AndehX's times are really fast is because of the version of PlayStation Driver (the official Sony firmware that interprets PS1 games). My loads were equivocal to AndehX's on PlayStation Driver 1.11. I got 1:09:45 in one very very shitty try. I will be running Claire A soon to see if I can go neck and neck with Trevor's time. If there is a way to downgrade the firmware to allow the game to run correctly we should consider allowing it.
