F59 Routing, Quirks, Skips, and Softlocks

# **Foreword**

This is a collection of everything I’ve learnt whilst running F59, and things which other community members have taught me. Some of it may be found in the[ List of not so obvious tricks and time saves guide](https://www.speedrun.com/project_wingman/guides/xkm29). Let me know if anything is wrong, needs clarification, or could be added! DM me with more info!

# **M1 – BOTB**

## Hangar Crawl

Immediately after you leave the hangar menu or reset the mission, hold accelerate until you gain visual of your aircraft. In limited circumstances, this will give you a small amount of constant speed when you spawn in. This is before you gain control. This will allow you to leave the hangar faster and shorten your distance to the runaway.

The speed is variable, sometimes you’ll be outside before your wingmen start moving, sometimes, it’ll be so slow that the effect is negligible.

I’m currently not sure what causes it. Sometimes it happens off a fresh boot, sometimes it occurs after I’ve had the game open for a while. All I know is that once the bug is 'activated', it remains so until the game is closed. Otherwise, activating it is a mystery to me. If you know anything more, DM me or make a thread with your findings :)

### Tells that Hanger Crawl hasn’t worked

You see a red alarm light flash as you load in.

Your screen remains utterly black until you gain visual.

You briefly see your UI pop up and disappear again, approximately a second before you gain visual.

## **Taxi Skip**

Drive ahead and slightly right into the grass straight out of the hangar; you will be teleported to the runway.

## **Thorn Rose Gang**

### **Spawn Location**

TRG spawns a set distance to the east of you. If you fly west before they arrive, you can ensure you'll be fighting them within the map boundaries and near your escaping allies, which may draw their fire.

### **Glass Cannon - Railguns**

TRG's second wave spawns with railguns on all F-types on mercenary difficulty. Focus these down as quickly as possible. Direct hits from railguns 2-shot you when glass cannon is on. To avoid getting hit, fly fast, play chicken, and avoid staying close to the F-types for too long. Railguns are likely to hit you when you are flying slowly and close to the enemy.

# **M2 - Invasion**

## Landing Crafts

These boats are sturdy and can withstand multiple missiles. On NG, UGBLs are your best bet for killing them quickly. On NG+, the boats die to one STDM. The Sk.37 can make quick work of these 2 initial waves thanks to having 4 STDM hardpoints by default.

## **PK Steel**

After you destroy the initial 2 waves, you'll be waiting around for ~6:15 minutes until PK Steel and the penultimate naval wave arrive. What you do within this time is of no consequence.

## **Naval Wave Softlock**

If you destroy any of the naval ships before certain dialogue finishes, the mission will softlock. You can kill hardpoints, but don't risk destroying the ships. Wait for these two lines to finish:

Cascadian Ship - "AA and SAM stations, tracking and online!"

Cascadian Ship - "Deal with them before we can box in the retreating forces!"

Keep in mind that PK Steel is highly aggressive and will finish off ships if you destroy too many hardpoints.

# **M3 - Mousetrap**

## **Bomber Squadron**

The Lanzelet + bombers will spawn and fly towards the Cascadian FOB after you destroy the 2nd wave of targets. The time frame in which you kill the 3rd wave is of no consequence, but all targets must be dead for the mission to end, or for Scraps skip to work.

## **Protect the Bombers**

Your allied bombers can be downed, and the Lanzelet can lose hardpoints. Keep enemy fighters busy and destroy any SAMs you see. The less damage the bomber squadron takes, the better; you need them to take down the Cascadian FOB quickly. It takes ~3:15 minutes for Lanzelet to reach the FOB.

## **Scraps Skip**

Credit to [FalconLuma](https://www.speedrun.com/users/FalconLuma), whom I saw trigger this skip and prompted me to investigate.

The moment the Lanzelet says: "Cascadian FOB is in range. Master arm on all ordnance." You have ~45s to clear the FOB before they say the following line:

"303 has expended all ordnance, we're RTB. K-9 gets the scraps."

Leave at least one target alive, or ideally, two/three in close proximity. Your allies might killsteal a target and ruin the skip. Bunkers near the edge of the FOB are sturdy and make good candidates for this skip.

Wait until Lanzelet begins to say the scraps line, and then kill the final target. If you do this before the scraps wave spawns in, 'Mission Complete' will appear, allowing you to finish the mission early.

If you do it too early, Lanzelet will still say the line, and you will be required to kill the scraps wave. Too late, and you will be required to kill the scraps wave. It's a pretty short window, so be prepared to stall near the target with fast missiles or double MGPs ready.

This skip is much easier to achieve on NG+ using the Glass Cannon modifier. Without it, killing all targets within 45s requires almost perfect routing, luck, and target execution.

# **M4 - Express Lane**

## **Tunnel Skip**

You can fly over the mountain range and stall within the trigger box at the end of the tunnel to progress the mission. The prototype planes are the best at this due to their high mobility. The F14 *can* do it, but struggles to do it quickly due to poor deceleration.

## **Plane Choice**

The F14 clears the tunnel the fastest by about 6-8s over any other plane. However, the prototype planes are able to perform Tunnel Skip 10-20s faster than this again, but you need to use AOA to slow down when approaching the tunnel exit for a good time.

### NG and NG+ Easy

I prefer the SK.37 with AOA + Tunnel Skip. Double MGPs + 4 STDMs make short work of targets. It's possible to get sub-4 minutes using this setup, and even faster when using glass cannon.

### NG+ Mercenary

You need to run flares on this difficulty, and as such, Tunnel Skip becomes much slower without AOA. The F14 is fastest through the tunnel and has good hardpoint options (HVSMs and UGBLs) with glass cannon on.

## **Target Priority**

Fly in wide circles to evade missiles whilst simultaneously striking targets. Especially on Mercenary difficulty, focus down railguns first and SAMs second to make your life easier. Once these are dead, it opens up your options to fly more aggressively.

# **M5 - MF**

## **Target Priority**

Destroy railguns asap and SAMs afterwards. If you feel unthreatened, focus down enemy fighters; they have a habit of veering far away from the kill zone on this mission and wasting your time.

# **M6 - Faust**

## **UGBLs**

Use UGBLs to destroy all hardpoints on Faust's airship in a single hit in each stage of the boss fight. It should be the first thing you do. Choose moments when Faust is flying in a predictable fashion, i.e. straight or in a gradual turn. Poor angles can cause you to miss or crash into her.

## **Phase 1**

Faust and her entourage will spawn on this radar line:

## **Phase 2**

Orion Squadron will spawn a large distance away to the southeast. Let them come to you whilst you bomb Faust. She will spawn new hardpoints after returning the phrase “By the Dust” to Orion, who say the same beforehand.

## **Phase 3**

Two enemy airships and a small squadron of aces spawn. Focus down the airships quickly after you bomb Faust, they have railguns.

Faust will be left with at least 4 lasers after you bomb her, they are located towards her tail. Be aware that missiles have trouble hitting them. Sometimes, a single super flak will remain on Faust's centre tail after you bomb her. If so, destroy it ASAP.

How to Configure OBS, Livesplit, and the Autosplitter

Hi there! I've created this guide to help runners record and time their runs. Autosplitter development for the game has come a long way, and it is exactly where it needs to be as a reliable method of timing runs, so I would encourage people to try it out!

# Configuring Livesplit

## Installation

Download and extract Livesplit to a place of your choosing using the download link above. Make sure you have a quick way to access the .exe to launch the program. I pin it to my taskbar.

I also have two additional folders next to the Livesplit folder for storing splits and layouts. These will come in handy later.

I would also highly recommend the Speed Guides Component (linked above) if you're running NG or F59 campaign categories. This allows you to make notes for each split so that you don't have to remember your hanger loadout for each mission. Install it by placing the downloaded file within the components folder:

## Configuring Splits

This is mostly geared towards anyone running a Campaign category. You can set up your own splits by right-clicking on Livesplit and clicking 'Edit Splits'. Alternatively, you can download splits that someone in the community has already made and then open them. You can save the splits under a different name for each category you run.

Under the resources tab on Speedrun.com are template splits for use with the autosplitter. Each has a 'Start Splits' version, which doubles your split count. Used with the 'Mission Start Splits' option via the Autosplitter, which triggers a split at the start of each mission. This can be useful for running the Mercenary NG+ category: You will be able to identify IL mission PBs during a run, which can then be submitted individually to the leaderboard.

For vanilla campaign runs, you want 21 splits, 42 with Start Splits turned on.

For F59 campaign runs, you want 6 splits, 12 with Start Splits turned on.

## Speed Guides Component

To use this, edit your layout and add 'Speed Guides Live' under 'other'. You may then double-click it and click further to 'Edit Guide', thereby allowing you to write notes for each split throughout your run. These appear in the movable information box as you proceed through each split.

## Change Timing Accuracy to Milliseconds!

Make sure to double-click on your 'Timer' and 'Subsplits' components and change the accuracy to milliseconds. This is especially important if you are running the Tunnel Run Category:

# Configuring the AutoSplitter

With LiveSplit open, click 'Edit Splits'. Given that you have Project Wingman as your selected game, an option will pop up to activate the autosplitter:

Click to activate it. You can then configure the settings depending on the category you intend to run.

## Campaign Runs

Your settings configuration should look like this.

Options require their parent option to be toggled on to work, so you can safely flip-flop between Campaign Mode and Mission Mode without the suboptions in the deactivated mode taking effect.

When you save your splits, it will usually remember your autosplitter options. Check it to make sure!

**IMPORTANT:** 'Crash Protection' and 'Pausing Stops Timer' require you to be comparing against Game Time like so:

### Mission Start Splits

When this option is turned on, your split count will double. Here are some example F59 splits:

Use this option when running Mercenary NG+, which will allow you to identify IL Mission PBs throughout your run.

This works well when combined with the 'Detailed Timer' component in your layout. It shows your total time and the time spent on the current split.

## IL Mission Runs

Your autosplitter settings should look like this:

Only one split is triggered during IL runs, when 'Mission Complete' appears. Generally, you don't need to name or customise your splits for IL category runs, but if you want to trigger splits manually at pivotal moments, feel free to add them in!

### Tunnel Run Category

Turn on the 'Autosplit Tunnel Run' option seen above. It triggers a split when you exit the tunnel in F59 M4 Express Lane. If you intend to run the full mission, add a second split to accommodate it.

# Configuring OBS

Once you have OBS installed, create a new scene for recording (or streaming if that's your thing!). Open Project Wingman, Livesplit, and any other applications you would like to record during your run.

## Audio

It's good practice to mute your desktop audio and capture sound directly from the game:

### Project Wingman

Add Project Wingman by clicking the '+' under Sources and selecting 'Game Capture'.

Make sure to check on 'Capture Audio' and check off 'Capture third-party overlays'.

By choosing to capture audio, you should now see Project Wingman appear as a slider in your audio mixer.

### Livesplit

Add Livesplit as a 'Window Capture':

You can then move/resize it to an appropriate place within the capture window. Hold control to disable snapping.

To make the background of Livesplit transparent, right-click it in the source list and apply a Filter. You'll want to add a Luma Key under effect filters, and mess around with it until it looks right.

### Controller Mapping

If you want to display your controller inputs on screen, use the GamePad Viewer link and configure the appropriate controller. Get a link, and then add it as a browser source in OBS. You may need to play with the brightness, contrast and transparency using filters.

## Recording Settings

Ensure you're outputting in an appropriate resolution under 'Output' in settings. If you change it, make sure to double-check your capture space afterwards. Some things may move or be cropped.

You can adjust your recording/streaming quality here too. I use CRF 13.

Under recording settings, make sure you are saving to an appropriate place you know how to find:

### Replay Buffer

This can be a useful tool on shorter IL mission runs. Set it up to backrecord for a certain length of time, which you know is approximately 10-20 seconds greater than your PB. For example, my PB for Tunnel Run is 151.890s:

## Hotkeys

Make sure you have a hotkey set up for starting/stopping recording:

## Test It!

Do a practice run and record it! Does anything stick out that needs to be altered? Fix it first before you run!

# Do some Runs

Hopefully, you should have everything set up! Have fun with the autosplitter!

List of not so obvious tricks and time saves

#Skip after "Mission Complete"
You can skip most post mission dialogue once the "Mission Complete" (or similar) message pops up on your screen. Just bring up the in game menu and select Skip. This saves several minutes on most missions.

#Heavy Secondary Guns
The heavy secondary guns that the SK-25 and PW-MK1 have do not have a rate of fire limit as of 1.04C and 1.04D beta patches. You can rapidly tap the gun button to increase your rate of fire. You need to be careful about your ammo though, you will deplete it far faster than normal. Because of how powerful this is, I would not be surprised if it gets patched out in the future, or otherwise balanced.

#Changing loadout in Campaign
Want guns and AOA Limiter for your fights against Frost Druid and Crimson 1 in Campaign but don't want to take them on the missions leading up to them? Just bring up the in game menu and select Hangar. This lets you change your aircraft and loadout so you can use more optimal weapons for individual missions.

#Bomber/Transport class aircraft
Without a damage modifier like Glass Cannon or Budget Cuts, you will need more than 2 standard missiles or more than 1 special weapon missile (MLAA/SAA) to down them. Supplementing damage with guns is good, just be careful not to crash into the aircraft.

#Littoria Class Airships
These are the militarized versions of the large civilian airships found in Mission 8 Clear Skies. The shape of the wings will block your weapons fire, so the cleanest way to down them is to approach them from above and in front of them. Anti Ship Missiles (ASMs) and Railguns can oneshot them like with any other ship with a direct hit to the hull.

#Mission 9 Stepping Stones (Version 1.04 and older)
The FC-9s that spawn in as priority targets near the end of the mission do not need to be shot down to complete the mission. The airships that are on Mercenary however, do need to be destroyed. In the 2.0 version these targets are required.

#Mission 12 Midnight Light
When the researchers on the radio say "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity." "Emphasis on lifetime sir," set your aircraft on the end of the platform the UNKNOWN priority target spawns on and fly through the tunnel the airstrip is on. You can get quick and easy damage on the SP-34R aircraft as it is taking off with your guns.

#Mission 15 Consequence of Power
Only the starting forces on the map need to be eliminated to progress the mission. This means the Airships, the MG-29s, the F/C-16s, and ground based ADVSAMs. The neutral grounded Battleships and the F/D-14s that spawn in as the mission progresses do not count towards this.

#Mission 16 Wayback
You can stay on your spawning course and hold down the thrusters. The sooner you reach Rowsdower the sooner Frost Druid will spawn in. You can also continue at the same course until you reach a hill that you would crash into if you don't move. Doing a 180 at this point will put you right behind Frost Druid when she spawns in. The Master Goose wingmen do not need to be downed to complete the mission.

#Mission 19 Red Sea

In 1.0.4 and older, the airships that spawn in the final wave are optional and can be ignored. In 2.0 these airships have become required and are marked as targets appropriately.

#Mission 21 Kings
Crimson 1's X-PF is invincible until he completes his second set of lines. From that point forward he is vulnerable. This does not apply to the wingmen that are in Mercenary.

List of Softlocks and How to Avoid Them

Throughout the game, there are a number of softlocks which can trigger by trying to play as fast as possible.

# Black Flag - Container

In the first mission, the last target is a container on the docks which triggers an explosion and the end of the mission. Intuitively, the way fastest to destroy this is to be firing at it before it becomes destructible, causing it to be destroyed as soon as it spawns. However, if it is destroyed as soon as it spawns it won’t trigger the explosion nor the end of the mission, leaving you flying around infinitely until you quit.

To avoid this simply give it a little time before destroying it, what works is to start firing your guns as soon as its marker appears, in the small amount of time taken for your bullets to hit it, the softlock window will have passed, even if fired at close range.

# Presidia - Naval Targets

In mission 20 when the Naval segment starts a number of ships in the port section of the city will become active and marked as priority targets, with all ships having to be sunk to progress to the final phase of the mission. However, destroying any priority targets (the hulls of the ships, destroying any of the weaponry on the ships is fine) before a certain part in the dialogue will cause the mission to softlock and not progress after the naval targets are all sunk. Waiting for AWACS Galaxy to say “Hitman Team” in the dialogue, “*Eminent Domain reports last remaining naval forces are pushing out to meet her. **Hitman Team** provide support.*” before sinking a ship will avoid this softlock.

# Bossfights

For this, bossfights are defined as when enemies spawn and have an introduction overlay, after which health bars are displayed at the bottom of the screen. These bossfights are all believed to be softlock risks as three have known softlocks all caused by dealing too much damage before the intro overlay is finished. For most bossfights there is very little delay between the spawn and the overlay so the window for softlocking is fairly short, however for those with lengthy intro dialogue or sequences, care should be taken to avoid finishing the fight before it has ‘started’.

# Midnight Light - SP43R Takeoff

As the bossfight starts at the end of mission 12, SP34R will spawn and take off from the platform's runway during which it can be damaged, however dealing enough damage to deplete the first health bar and put SP34R into phase 2 will cause the mission to not end after it is shot down.

# Return - Crimson Squadron

In Return there is approx. 30 seconds between the mission update when Crimson squadron spawns and when the overlay appears (when Crimson 1 says “*Crimson Squadron, engage. Avenge this land*”). If all 8 (16 with double time) aircraft are shot down within these 30 seconds the dialogue will continue, the intro overlay will appear, and health bars appear, but despite the health bars all being fully depleted, the game will believe that the fight is ongoing as dialogue that play during the fight will continue as normal.

To avoid this softlock, simply leave a single aircraft alive until the overlay appears, after which it can be shot down to trigger the end of the mission.

# Kings

The Kings softlock is caused by depleting Crimson 1’s first 3 health bars before they appear on-screen about 45 seconds into the mission. If this is done then despite being able to damage and shoot down Crimson 1 in phase 4, triggering his death dialogue and explosion, his phase 4 health bar will remain full, and the mission will not end.

The way to identify this softlock is if the overlay and a full health bar still appear for phase 4 after shooting down Crimson 1. To avoid it, simply avoid dealing enough damage to finish phase 3 before the health bars appear.

# Other Bossfights

As of writing, it seems unlikely a softlock in the other bossfights will affect speedrunnig. In my opinion, the only one that has a real potential of softlocking is Crosstalk squadron in Homestead, though they can already be destroyed extremely quickly as their intro overlay appears. The other bosses are all unlikely to have speedrun softlocks as they either spawn far enough away from the player that their overlay will have happened by the time your weapons are able to connect (Intercept Specialists in Clear Skies and Crimson Squadron in Cold War), or their intro overlay starts as soon as they spawn (Frost Druid in Wayback).

# Frontline 59 - Faust ASMs

In the final mission of FL59, using ASMs to destroy the core of  the CDV Roosevelt before intended, that is all other enemies being destroyed, will cause a softlock. The airship will become passive but still spawn its future waves of attachments and the mission will contiune playing normally as if it is still alive, but without being able to destroy the core at the correct time the mission will never end.

Simply don't use ASMs on this mission. The devs are aware of this and may be patched in future updates.

Mission 21 Kings softlock and how to avoid it

There are two versions of this softlock: finishing phase 3 before the title drop finishes and finishing phase 4 before he starts to say his first line ("No...no, not yet!") Doing either of these puts the game in a state that the triggers at the end of 3 and beginning of 4 can't handle. If you see an orange and a white healthbar at the bottom of the screen then it has softlocked and will never fade out after finishing phase 4. Avoid finishing phase 3 until you can see the healthbars, and avoid finishing phase 4 before he starts to speak.

Note that this may not be 100% accurate as the softlock isn't fully understood yet and further testing may be needed.

2.0 UPDATE: The phase 4 softlock is still present, however it seems the healthbars appear even if the game has not softlocked. Just make sure not to kill him before the healthbars appear.

Post Mission Summary and Mission Skip Bug (MSB)

This works in the 1.04 D patch and NOT the 2.0 (Frontline 59 and PS5) release. Any mission with a takeoff sequence can be skipped. The post mission summary can also be skipped this way at the end of a normal mission. You still get any credits you earned during the mission. You will want a high framerate if attempting higher skip counts. FalconLuma did some testing for this.

Save File Location

The save-files for Project Wingman are located in:  C:\Users\"USER"\AppData\Local\ProjectWingman\Saved\SaveGames

Alternatively you can type " %LOCALAPPDATA% " into the windows explorer address bar and navigate from there.

Updated Mission Skip Bug Module list

This module list can be used to determine the number of skips to get between two modules and is useful when routing an MSB run.

Campaign Type
