Frozen Nipple%: essentially you get the nipple outfit just as you would in nipple% but you continue the run all the way to snow there you do the race and afterwards collect the moon that the NPC opposite to the shop gives you for wearing the outfit the run is just a little fun variation and could be a pretty cool extension any thoughts?
I agree with PistashioPiper and Zennan but thank you for sharing the idea! Interesting idea.
Sounds like a pretty cool idea, but PistachioPiper and Zennan do have a point. Maybe it will get accepted, who knows
I'd also like to point out that the optimal time to buy the Boxer Shorts would probably be...in Snow Kingdom. So it would baaasically be Any% until Snow (picking up some Luigi Hint Arts along the way), then Bound Bowl, then get this one Moon. Not many people are interested in running Any%-until-some-point-and-then-do-some-specific-thing categories. These ideas tend to get rejected.
The only real run like this is Festival%. It's literally just Any% until Metro, then get the Festival Triple Moon. But what makes this category great, is you can convert a dead Any% run into a Festival% run, as long as your run died before Metro. This makes it slightly less frustrating when your run dies in Wooded or Lost.
My first thought when reading this thread was, "Oh, yeah, if your run dies before Snow you can just switch to a Frozen Nipple% run and still feel like you're accomplishing something. It can be like Festival%." But there are 2 problems with that. 1.) You can't just easily convert your dead Any% run to a FN% run. You would not have been collecting coins along the way and would likely not be able to afford the Boxer Shorts. 2.) Your run would literally have to die in Metro, or else you could just do Festival%, which doesn't require any extra coins.
So unfortunately it seems like FN% is in this weird limbo where it's not different enough from Any% to be super interesting, but still too different from Any% to fill a role like Festival%. It was interesting to think about at least.
Thank you for your extensive look into this category Ocarinist_Drew. All the points you made seem quite valid.
I have an idea for a category extension. It's one of the longer ones kind of like 100% and All moons. I would consider it to be sort of a meme run for those who run the longer categories. I'd like to think of it as the longer version of a nipple%. You collect 666 moons and then you buy the skeleton outfit at the end. I call it spooky%. Having almost the same routing as 100% since you have to grind for maximum coins anyway to buy the skeleton outfit that you don't receive until later in the game after obtaining 560 moons.
I think it's worth a shot. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work out. If you're a fan of long runs I would recommend it. Also it's not as long as the main board category of 100%. If anything should take roughly maybe 4-5 hours.
I think the main issue with that is that 666 moons is a completely arbitrary number in the game. It doesn’t feel like a solid goal.
It has to do with the whole "Spooky" Theme though. Who knows. It could be fun.
Imo for a category to be good it needs to have ONE singular goal, e.g. get every moon, get every toadette achievement, get a star as fast as possible.
This category has two goals, the 666 moons one and the skeleton one. It just makes the whole thing feel pointless.
every costume. starts wen you press start and ends when you get the todette moons all costumes
PLEASE if you're going to discuss categories do it in the Discord (discord.gg/smospeedruns), not in some random thread.
As for the suggested categories: Frozen Nipple% - Nipple% with half of any% and snow WP slapped on top of it, what's the point. Spooky% - Skeleton outfit is 9999 coins, the entire category would be coin grinding and would just be the most unfun thing ever. Before you say "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work out" I would suggest looking at how the category would be routed. Every Costume - same problem, the entire category is coin grinding that no one wants to do.
Another reminder: suggesting categories without doing any runs doesn't help anyone. Do a run and submit it through the form.
