when i try to apply the data.win patch the outcome is always "This patch is not intended for this rom!". what do I do? what did I do? (the patch for the runner worked I think)

You need to make sure you're applying the patch to an unmodified 1.001 Windows data.win from steam, otherwise the patch won't work.
