Question about "Is it OoB ?"

Hello, I have a question about the Inbounds category rules. I was watching some Portal runs, when I wondered about when something is out of bounds. At first, let's talk about walls, no matter the skins (usually nodraws are the most discussed because they are invisible). Is going in a wall allowed ? If I remember correctly, it is. Basically you consider the bounds as 'not oob', which is a fine definition. Hammer > View > Find Coordinates remains a safe way to check if a point in space is in oob with that definition.

However, if your body goes oob, even by accident, is it allowed ? I mean I can understand that if you peek out of bounds, you might no want to reset and so you reload your save. But if you walk oob, even by accident, during your sg, and then come back inbounds to continue your sg sequence, without profiting from going oob, is it allowed ? I am really curious about that.

In the rules it is stated that if you accidentally go oob and DO benefit from it, you have to load the latest save. I dont think you have to if you dont benefit from it

'In the rules it is stated that if you accidentally go oob and DO benefit from it, you have to load the latest save. I dont think you have to if you dont benefit from it' Thanks, I can read too. I implicitely asked if it was a good thing to allow to go oob, even if you don't profit from it.

'I'm assuming, by extension, that if you go out of bounds accidentally and don't profit from it, you're fine and don't have to reload a save. It's pretty heavily implied, at least.' Did you read the previous message ? I said that going out of bounds, even by accident isn't something good at all. I am just going to take an example : if you saveglitch, then move backward oob, does it count ? The current rules states that yes, since you haven't profited from it; however, it's not because it's written that it's good. I hope someone will not post something like "oh, rules state that if it doesn't profit from going oob, then it's fine" again; it's not because something is written that it's good.

In my opinion, since you don't save any time this rule is fine. In another situation like for example, no hit runs in games like Dark Souls, imply that if you get hit you have to start over because the run is invalidated. You could argue that simply being OoB should invalidate that run because at that point it's not an in bounds run. If there were no instant saving/loading mechanism as opposed to other games I would be in favor of completely invalidating that run. That being said a good compromise might be that if you go OoB you should be forced to reload to ensure that there is a clear line and no debate about benefiting from OoB. Is it even possible to benefit from being OoB without shooting a portal or manipulating an object once you realize that you're OoB?

Yes you can also benefit from simply being OoB with your body, for example you can easily move through OoB and get back inbounds if you're in sg state due to lack of collision.

Also, I feel like it shouldn't be allowed to go OoB during a saveglitch for example. You don't benefit from it in the general sense, but you do kinda benefit from the fact that you can continue the saveglitch even though you "messed up" and moved OoB. Maybe a good solution would be to just define these special cases of where "you don't benefit" from being OoB (or where it's close to unavoidable), like sticking through the ceiling in 10.

Idealy the definition for non-sg state would be that you have to reset/load a save if you can see out of bounds in any way unless you're clipping through the ceiling via a fling, did not intent to clip through the ceiling and currently aren't crouching (crouching can be used to make clipping easier).

Then there are stupid things like invisible boxes and walls pretty much everywhere that make it look like you are out of bounds, but you're technically still inbounds. One of these is in 04 under the hallway close to the elevator to 05 and can only be seen in hammer. Jumping in that hallway during the inbounds sg route if you're not comfortable doing the abh, it's next to impossible to judge if you actually went oob there, especially when crouching, even with cl_showpos 1. While routing Still Alive inbounds I also found a very nice route in 01 that would look like the theoretical body would be oob, if there wasn't an invisible box attached to the wall, this one being special in that you can actually put a portal on it, while oob, where as that does not appear to be the case for the one in 04 under the hallway, in fact you can shoot a portal through it, under the immediate floor of that hallway. Note that the rules for this actually do not mention the theoretical body to be limited to inbounds, only the camera, so it's fine anyways: "Beat the game without having your camera or placed portals leave the map and without scripts, macros or cheats."

So there are quite a bunch of special cases for, appearing oob while inbounds that might need further review.

Audio requirements

Startong today, runs that require video proof (top 25) and runs beyond that where video is the only form of proof, now require audio, as recording audio for only the game is now a native OBS feature.
