Coinless category?

I was thinking about a category where you beat the game start to finish without touching a coin. Not sure if this is possible but can we make it happen?

I was thinking about this idea too! I’ll do some tas work to see if it is possible

It's definitely not possible to do a 0% run. Unless we find a way to clip horizontally through blocks, it's not even possible to beat the first level coinless.

It has been already few weeks since I started thinking about a "Minimum Coins" category. It's right you can't do a coinless run, at least currently. So I've started to work on every levels, to see which coins you can't avoid. I took some screenshots, but I'll post them after everything is finished. This is the minimum amount of coins for every levels:

1-1: 1 coin 1-2: 0 coin 1-3: 1 coin

2-1: 0 coin 2-2: 2 coins 2-3: 0 coin

3-1: 1 coin 3-2: 0 coin 3-3: 0 coin

4-1: 0 coin 4-2: ??? 4-3: 1 coins

There is still 4-2 which I have no idea how many coins are mandatory. I know that there is 2 coins on the first platforms section, 2 coins on the big jump with 3 coins, and 1 coin on the turtles section. The big problem is the last part of the level. It's very difficult to know which coins are mandatory. Since there is no savestate to use, you have to do the level all over again everytime, and this last part is very complex in itself, with very hard jumps, and the permanent void under your feet. I was so frustrated that I gave up... This is why I asked some help. This is the only part of the game where there is still some missing informations. After this work done, I could create a guide, in which I can post my screenshots of every unavoidable coins, and create the category on the leaderboard (probably in "Misc."). Last thing, I asked few experimented players about a specific rule, and everyone were agree about this rule: If you take an unecessary coin, you can take a death to reset the level. It makes the category much more accessible, and it's logical, since there is an infinite amount of lives.

for the first jump in the weird platforming section in 4-2, you can skip at least 1 coin. for the last coin in that section, i'm pretty sure it is mandatory. 1 coin is required for the big jump. yes, you can skip the big jump while grabbing only 1 coin. it is extremely precise. i think 1 coin is required for the koopa section, since you can use a book/big item to damage boost through some of the last koopas. the final jump off the red one is possible to be done without grabbing the coin. the thin block with the one coin on top is impossible to do without getting the coin, i think. and for the ice bill section, you can grab 1 coin for every time there's two coins right beside each other (i think?) and you can skip the coins floating in midair that tell you where to jump. the final tally: 6/7. not exactly sure.

- proof of 1 coin big jump - proof of red koopa bounce with no coin needed

idk if this is exactly right

The powerup item is Vermont Cheese. :)

I've beaten the game with coinless 1-3 and 4-3! On 1-3, start small and get the first powerup. You can crouch jump on the first star block then clip through the ceiling, then beat the level. On 4-3, star small and get the first powerup. Turn left and hop back onto the right edge on the high platform right before it. You can crouch jump and clip through this spot and beat the level. I can upload my video of this run.

Here's my demonstration of the game with coinless 1-3 and 4-3. 1-3 is at 1:33 and 4-3 at 9:55.

I have done 2-2 coinless as well! I think these two coins might have been the issue, but they are low enough to where you can weave around the coins and jump over them. I recorded a run doing every level before it then coinless 2-2. I can upload the full video, but here is a clip of the 2 coins being avoided. https://streamable.com/8tdfah

So now it's 1 coin for 1-1, 1 coin for 3-1, we don't know about 4-2 yet, and the other 9 levels are possible coinless.
