Question about cheats

I'm confused on what exactly is allowed in terms of cheats. I submitted a run using the "scott" cheat code which speeds up the overall playing of the game, and it got rejected as "Cheats don't need to be explicitly banned to not be allowed". That would be fine normally, but I'm confused since the top run of the same category also uses another cheat code which disables the fever zooming, which also speeds up the game (however only slightly). I don't know why my cheats were unacceptable but that cheat was, especially considering both the game rules and category rules mention nothing about cheats at all. If I could get some further clarification that would be appreciated.

We talked about this on discord a few months ago, I thought it should be clarified in the rules that no cheat codes are allowed. Some other people thought that it shouldn’t be necessary, as you said. I still think it should be in the rules, as clearly it’s not obvious to everyone.

You said the top run used a cheat code, that would be me? I haven’t used any cheat codes in my runs, as far as I know. I just press right click during fever. Which run are you talking about?

Oh, is that really just what you do? I noticed that your run on Adventure NG+ skipped through the Fever zoom-ins, and I couldn't figure out how to do that myself so I googled it and ended up finding there was a cheat code to disable that. Apologies, I has assumed that's what you had used.

Cheat codes being banned makes sense, I just wish there was a rule saying that as it varies from game to game.

Actually, it's because I play with 3D acceleration off in the settings. Didn't even realize it disables the zoom effect! If you try it yourself, remember that you have to restart the game for the setting to take effect.

I can't think of any games off the top of my head where cheat codes are allowed by default. I've written rules for games excluding stating it. Unless specified in the rules that they are allowed, I'd just assume they're not. Good info on the 3D accel though @pnaha

I checked some games with cheat codes and many of them had it in the rules, including GTA V, Spyro Reignited, RDR2, Contra and The Sims 4. Doesn't "Any%" usually mean completing the game by any means? So, everything not mentioned in the rules should be fair game in my opinion. A new player should be able to read the rules and not have to guess if some things are banned or not. Why not just add a sentence to the game rules?

These still aren't examples of games where they're allowed by default. There also aren't very many rulesets that tell you that you can't use a gameshark or you can't use savestates on emulator, it's implied. In game cheat codes usually fall into that as well.

I'm not saying that sentence shouldn't be in the rules, it is probably best practice to do that, otherwise you'll waste one person's time having them do a run with them just to have it rejected and added to the rules anyway.

I also don't know any games where cheat codes are allowed, but that's not the point. The point is that games that have cheat codes, at least many of them, have it in the rules. That's because any% by default should allow everything (that is in-game).

Using 3rd party stuff like gameshark is not comparable to using things that developers put in-game, like cheat codes. Emulators are a whole other topic, but I looked into some games that people run with emulators and they have very clear rules about what is allowed. For example, savestates are mentioned in the SMB1 rules.

Edit: Also, the game doesn't even say anything about cheating when you type in the codes. It just says "rightclick speedup activated". So, for all we know, they are just hidden options, not cheats :D

When I made my posts here, I tried looking for this page thinking it was a forum post. It could be useful for discussions like this in the future.

It seems to cover this sort of thing and others pretty well.

Yep, that would have been useful. So I guess stuff like "scott" is a cheat code, and thus not allowed by default. Thanks for linking that!

Can we instead get a separate category like cheat% where all codes: scott, kathy, steve, etc. are instead allowed. I think would add a fun extra category for people maybe not interested in an hour long run.

Is the "zoom" command allowed? It has the same effect as turning off the hardware acceleration, which is allowed already.
