Humble greetings from a simple Box Man

Hello, I'm fairly new to speedruns but I'm currently learning bits and pieces here and there and was hoping to find personal tips and tricks from speedrunners when they first started out. I'm sure there's a topic of this somewhere and I've been overlooking it but still it's nice to have a starting point.

As for me personally, I'm just a box wearing goof getting into speedrunning just to get better at it, I've done 2 streams where I've played from the start to the end so far and I have to say they were the done badly since I wasn't speedrunning them. The first one (Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity) lasted 29 hours and the newest one (Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart) lasted 11 hours which was yesterday. Let's just say I'm very terrible at speedruns right now lol.

In the end I just want to pull off speedruns while wearing a box on my head and nearly passing out from the heat.

Everyone starts out not so hot when it comes to speedruns, don't let it get to you. Super long speedruns like you're doing are quite difficult to begin with, but they have the advantage that you don't have to worry about the small mistakes as much as you do on shorter runs. The best thing I can say is to make sure you don't sacrifice your health for the speedrun- figure out time for breaks, eating, and alternate between sitting and standing if possible.

Best advice I can give from when I was starting out is to take care of your hands. The arthritis and RSI will set in fast if you overwork your hands, so try to keep them in shape. They're not made of the same muscles as the rest of your body and really don't recover well. Definitely look into proper mashing techniques as well.

Also, please don't pass out from the heat- hydrate and get a fan. Put it a good distance away if you're worried about the sound interfering with a mic or whatnot.

GL with it!

Hi enjoy going fast :> You are doing perfectly fine, you are not familiar with any strats and just try to beat the game as fast as you can. That is the right idea and you will get better and learn more.

Try to not pass out, this sounds unhealthy. And perhaps you want to look at a speedrun for those games and try to learn a thing or two from the speedruns. Usually, joining their community discord (they often have a discord or some form of community platform) can be a first step to be a part of their and the speedrunning community. Also, if you do not like specific rules for leaderboards, remember, you can always run something without submitting it to a leaderboard. Also, sometimes rules you put up on yourself still comply to a category, so do not hesitate to submit to those leadearboards.

But yeah. HF.

In terms of looking for guides, unfortunately only the most popular speed games get beginners guides. It might help to make forum posts in the game you're about to run or ask in their respective discords. Starting off a lot of games can be tough, but the rapid improvements you make after even 1 run will feel great :)

GLHF with whatever you end up doing.
