But here is a copy-paste for you!

Why speedrun Killing Floor? Good question dear reader; Killing Floor is primarily a survival horror game. It's a game with enemy waves - it's a defense game, right? Well, here are a concise list of points for you to consider when thinking about Killing Floor 1 as a potential speedgame.

  • Did you see ADGQ, SDGQ, or ESA or any speed-running marathons on Twitch or Youtube? Yeah! Those are awesome, right?

  • Killing Floor is a popular, critically acclaimed FPS with a strong community of active players, modders and content makers. Now that Killing Floor 2 has been released, it is unlikely that Killing Floor will recieve new changes and alterations, so play is likely to be on a level playing field for the time being.

  • There are a multitude of runs and catagories available - ranging from Individual Level times to Single Segment runs across a number of maps. These runs can cater for those with a few minutes spare, to an hour for a group of maps, to a ??? amount of time for the whole set! For the less technical amongst us, the game uses an in-game timer that accounts for the slow-motion moments. The groups of stages uses 3rd party timers that are freely available.

  • May be a subjective point: but the game has very tight, consistent controls and aim, and has a fantastic soundtrack, as well as quality sound effects throughout.

  • The catagories feature various difficulties; so if Hell on Earth is your fancy, go for it. The game is punishing, but it's not I wanna be the guy hard. It is difficult, but it won't kill you without a reason.

  • While the game does have some random elements out of the player's control (namely Zed spawns) the Zed waves can be slightly manipulated, however!

  • There are 7 perks (classes) and each has their own place in different runs and situations, so don't feel like your favourite class / weapons are excluded.

  • Killing Floor has a central leaderboard on Speedrun.com, for the archiving of videos and times. The page is quite new and recent, so the opportunity is there to set some times and claim some WRs!

  • For the individual levels, the resets are quick and relatively painless: just forfeit and reload the map. Keep calm and carry on!

  • Last, but not least - Killing Floor is a relatively easy and quick game to learn for the purpouse of speedrunning. Just noting a few tricks and techniques, not too bad.

How to Speedrun Killing Floor Below is a list of points to aid the prospective Killing Floor speedgamer:

  • So; you're speedrunning, and you want to go the fastest? That means being level 6 for whichever perks or weapons you decide to speedrun with. Because for some reason, ranking up perks means your bullets are more powerful(?). There are existing guides that help guide players to maxing out their favourite perk, but I personally used a community map from the steam workshop that helped level up any perk I needed. To get all perks to 6th rank takes about a lazy afternoons' worth of time. The link for it is below.

  • One of the main differences between KF regular and KF speedrunning is in the player's playstyle. Often you will be playing at your most aggressive, and combining risk and potential damage for maximising the time you see enemy Zeds on screen. There is a shift from the focus from surviving the rounds to dominating them. Fortune (rng) favours the brave. Taking damage does not slow your run down, but stopping to heal does, and having around 40HP slows your run speed.

  • Speaking of playing somewhat recklessly; depending on class, it is almost always more ideal to buy armor after the first wave, as you'll be level 6 and should have a fairly decent starting weapon as is. Do not underestimate the power of wombo-combo clots in tight corridors, they can end runs quite quickly. (But hey, if you're good enough to buy heavier weaponry and not worry about early-game clots, all power to you.)

  • Discovered when messing around with Sandbox Mode - it seems that there is a 6 second lag buffer by default on the moment the wave starts and the time when Zeds begin to spawn. This rule is incosistent at best, but worth thinking about if no early zed spawns are near you.

  • It is acknowledged that Zed spawns can be manipulated through line of sight. Zeds will spawn immediately in the map area, without needing to hop over walls or debris. If there are no Zeds around, often being close to walls or hiding behind objects and staring at a wall / the floor will encourage Zeds to spawn aggressively close to you and reduce your need to wait for them to come to you. Looking away from your Zed enemies may seem counter-intuitive, but often Zed spawns come with sound effects: growls and such, giving you often ample warning of their approach.

  • Holding up; welding doors and being inside vs. Being outside, running around. Runs combine elements of the two - it is often best to "trick the game" into thinking you are playing defensively, and spawn Zeds aggressively to your location, and then rushing out to fight them head on. Often this will depend on the map and where the trader puts you.

  • Zed time: in individual level runs use the in-game timer which accounts for slow motion moments accordingly. On single-segment runs, the slow-motion will effectively slow down your run and ideally you want to keep these to a minimum. As a Beserker or Commando, once you trigger Zed time, pause, allow Zed time to finish, and then continue to save the frames.

  • Using grenades if you're not a demo can also slow you down depending on situation, though this depends on the player. Throwing a grenade to a group of enemies that are difficult to reach immediately can be practical, otherwise the Zeds have an annoying habit of moving away from your 'nade, the sharp-shooters amongst you can shoot / spray the grenade to detonate it at will.

  • Buy weapons when they become useful and appropriate, and not before if possible. Each additional weapon contributes to your total weight, and the more weight you carry, the slower you move. You want to go fast! Get the angles and search the map for those pesky Zeds.

  • There is a 1 minute timer on each map, it is unessecary to move towards the trader and wait for the Zeds to follow you to prepare for your gun shopping. Currently; there is no known trader skip(?) but this would be extremely valuable for running!

  • Zed kill priority: depends on the situation again, but I personally consider Clots, then whatever is closest and charging, and then Sirens. This order maintains your health and reduces risk.

  • There is a good way to figure out the quickest and most ideal "route" or places to stand and move and fight in each map. Consider this: the ideal area = the highest amount of nearby spawn areas vs the amount of problematic or buggy AI spawns. For example, on WestLondon, this is somewhere between the ends of the crashed double deckers in the first tunnel, as this still gets the surrounding spawns, but avoids the problematic area near the burning skip and the front doors to the very dark corridor area.

  • It is possible, but sometimes inconsistant to lure the Patriarach into spawning very close to the player by essentially hiding behind objects and in corners using the similar line of sight trick with the other Zeds. KF-Biotics Lab, on the second floor, (down the first set of steps) there is a room with two windows, a door and a desk. Hiding behind this desk almost always spawns the Patriarach a few steps away.

  • Killing the Patriarach quickly: ideally you want to kill the P'boss before he has the chance to go invisible and heal and summon the clots and generally slow you down. The strat' depends on what difficulty you are playing on, naturally. Normal and below: The AA12 with the Support Specialist kills the P'boss within one magazine if you hit consistantly, other classes tend to depend more on luck and preparation.

  • The P'boss spawn comes with a handy camera angle that shows where his is and shows his taunt. During this time you can rotate the camera and move your character, so if you know where you are it is possible to practically move and save time. Be warned though; there is a known bug where if you are seen by the Pat during this time and attack him, you will be stuck in that camera mode (still in control of your character, mind) but unless you finish him promptly, your run could be over.

  • Bloat bile, either puked or exploded takes about 0.5 seconds from the end of the animation to clearing and finishing in the game. Be warned.

  • Sticky Zeds: KF players will know these moments when there is one Zed is on the counter but they are nowhere to be found. These are generally "Sticky Zeds" and will despawn after some time: sometimes they will despawn quickly, and others they will take a long time. It is all luck of the draw. Generally you can avoid "Sticky Zed" by mainly staying in areas with non buggy spawns.

  • If you're interested in running KF on the CoreMaps% catagory, I would highly reccomend starting with KF-Farm as it is the slowest map of the set and the one you will likely want to reset the most.

  • Use other runs and the video evidence on the Speedrun.com website as a general guide and foundation to build your runs and developments up against. If you know you could run it quicker - put a few comments as to why!

So - with all that. Let's run some KF! See you on the boards!

Acknowledgements and Resources Firstly: a really big shout-out to Killing Floor speedrunner and streamer EagleLiver. He is why the SS AA12 strat is coined "The Eagle". A lot of the strats have been developed by spending time chatting and competing for times in the game.

Here is a link to the KF-LevellingPerky map that I used to quickly level my perks to level 6 for the purpouse of speedrunning: NOTE - levelling your perks to level 6 in this manner isn't an intent of the game design and most players would do better to improve their playing first before artifically levelling up. Levelling up was a way that the developers could ensure hours played before tackling the highest difficulty on co-op servers. Anyway, that said - here's the link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=112219729

Here is the leaderboard for Speedrun.com - where you can post your videos and have them verified for times. Make an account! If you want to make a run for a catagory that doesn't exist, just the moderators know and we'll have it added. Link: http://www.speedrun.com/kf09

Seeing as you are here; here is a link for all the current guides to general Killing Floor play on Steam uploaded by the players: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1250/guides

Two pieces of software you will need for speedrunning will be a timer with splits: Livesplit is highly reccomended. Link: http://livesplit.org and OBS - it is a opensource free program that allows users to either livestream and record to Twitch.TV or similar website or just to record locally. Here is the video for the current WR for the CoreMaps% catagory with added post-commentary to help others and to discuss about some of the things that happen during the run. Link:
