01.1 - Getting started with Jak and Daxter Speedrunning

# Game Version differences

The game can be run on PS2, PS3, PS4 & PS5 (& PSVita). Each platform comes with benefits and
drawbacks as listed below:

• **PS2** - The most popular platform to run on, only downside is some PS2 copies cannot
perform Citadel Skip (see below). It is advised to run on PS2 if you already own one.

• **PS3** - The least popular platform to run on, has "punch glitch" and Citadel Skip is patched
on all versions. Only run on PS3 if you have no other option.

• **PS4** - Used by some runners, fast loads but lags in some areas. However on-foot movement is restricted
to only 16 directions, or 8 when walking or crouch-walking. Citadel Skip is also patched on
some versions (see below). Run on PS4 unless you own a PS2.

• **PS5** - Largely untested, but very similar to running on PS4.

• **PSVita** - Just dont.

• **Emulator** - Not allowed for run submission on the leaderboard.

• PS2 All PAL
• PS4 PAL
• PS5 PAL

# Recording/Streaming Runs

To submit runs to the leaderboard, you'll need a way to record it, you can use either a phone and camera, but the use of a capture card or built in recording features (PS4/PS5) is recommended.

Most runners use OBS Studio or StreamLabs OBS to record/stream their runs. Most runners
also use LiveSplit to time their runs.

01.2 - How to Start Your Runs

# Starting from a new game file

1. Make your new game file (make sure play hints are turned off in the main menu)
2. Reset your console during the intro cutscene to skip it.
3. When the console boots up, load your file. And start to mash pause to pause as soon as possible
4. Save your game to a **different file** to not destroy your starting file.
5. Un-pause. The timer starts when Jak touches the ground and his arms start going down. Here's what the frame looks like:

6. Your run has now begun!  If you reset your timer and start a new run, load the original base file you made in step 1 and repeat steps 4 and 5.

## **Alternative PS2 Memory Card Method**

If you are on PS2, you can use the memory card method to start runs. This method removes the need to make a save on each reset, but will require the memory card to be removed every time.

1. Make your new game file (make sure play hints are turned off in the main menu).
2. Reset your console during the intro cutscene to skip it.
3. When the console boots up, load your new file and pull out your memory card once the screen fades to black.
4. If the card was taken out at the correct time, then the 'memory card was removed' message will pop up while Jak is still inside the portal.
It's advised to add a small delay on your timer so that you can start it as you exit the menu. The average delay to add from the menu to touching the ground is 1.5 seconds.
5. Your run has now begun!  Note that if you reset your run while in Geyser, you will need to load to a separate game file and then load back to your original base file if you want to keep the same consistent timing.  This is because the load time from Geyser Rock to Geyser Rock is very fast and will thus result in the 'memory card was removed' message popping up at an incorrect time.  Sandover Village to Geyser Rock is the fastest load that gives you the correct position, but a file from any other area will work as well.

## Additional notes for this method:

- If you save in your run, it is recommended that you save to a different file so that you do not have to repeat the process of making a new file over again.  Likewise, your 0% file should not be in the first save file slot if you do this, as this is the slot the game defaults to when saving for the first time after putting the memory card back in.
- If you press L2 or R2 before the 'memory card was removed' message pops up, it will delay it slightly, which changes the delay to around 1.3 seconds.
- If you are doubtful of whether or not your 'memory card was removed' message is popping up at the correct time, try comparing to a run that has already been verified on the leaderboards.  You can also reach out to a moderator or ask for help in our community discord server.

## **Important additional information (please read):**

- Everything between loading the run file and starting the run must be recorded as part of your video evidence so that mods can verify the starting method.
- Replacing your hard drive with an SSD on PS4 is allowed.
- If you have any additional questions or do not understand these instructions, feel free to contact a moderator or ask for assistance in our community discord.
- **If you are running on any version and do not start from inside the portal, your run will not be verified.**

It is recommended to add a delay to your LiveSplit when starting runs to make it more accurate:

# Route

There are two currently used routes, the only major difference between the two is the use of two different methods for skipping the Klaww boss fight, collectively known as [Klaww Skip](https://wiki.jakspeedruns.com/Klaww_Skip) . All of Hub 1 (pre-Fire Canyon) is the same in both routes and is focused on collecting 20 cells as fast as possible, which in the current route involves also collecting 240 orbs to purchase both Oracle cells in Sandover Village. This can be difficult to juggle for new runners, so it is recommended that you establish which orbs to collect in advance.

__**Idle Deload** (For Beginner Runners):__
The slower route uses Idle Deload, which is a 100% consistent and easy to perform skip. However the use of this skip, while being slower to perform, also requires a trip to Spider Cave to collect enough health to perform LTS. This loses ~1:40 to the faster route in total.

__**Lava Walk** (For Experienced Runners):__
The fastest route uses Lava Walk, which is an inconsistent skip that saves just under 30s over performing Idle Deload, and crucially maintains any additional health collected by the player through the skip. This allows the player to skip going to Spider Cave to collect more.

02.3 - Any% guide

**WARNING**: This category is not for beginners to Jak & Daxter Speedrunning. Noone will stop you picking this category to run first, but we **highly** recommend you give No LTS, 100%, or No FCS a try first.
FCS and LTS are both required to complete a run, and neither of them are doable without a lot of practice. FCS is considered the hardest trick/skip in Jak Speedrunning.

# "Why didn't LTS work?"

There's several things that can go wrong when attempting to do LTS, here's a quick list of everything that could have gone wrong while attempting the skip :

**- Not loading in lava tube properly when going OOB**
Check your camera when you're moving oob or you might not load in LT properly, if that's the case then you won't be able to store lava tube as you're not able to trigger the checkpoint to lava tube.

**- Not idle storing while you have the lava tube checkpoint**
Usually people hit the LT checkpoint trigger with the camera after stopping so they don't need to move as far to save a second, but if you don't go far enough or don't move the camera correctly you won't have the LT checkpoint and same as the first issue, not store correctly

**- Not waiting long enough to idle store**
Unlikely but if you're not waiting up to at least the idle animation starting then it won't store the level ID for idle deload.

**- Not getting VC checkpoint back after idle deload**
I doubt it'd be possible to miss if you do anything close to what people usually do there as movement but nonetheless, if you don't get the VC checkpoint back then the idle deload won't work at the end since you already have a checkpoint within the level you're reloading with idle deload.

**- Messing up the checkpoint bypass**
This is one of the most likely culprit since it's really easy to miss without realising it if you're not paying attention and can just be plain hard to do. Same reason as the previous one, if you're missing the bypass then you'll have LT checkpoint.

**- Not going far enough into LT**
If you're stopping slightly early to do the deload, it won't work, that's why we're usually tipping our toe within that one rock, to make sure we're far in enough. If not you'll be closer to the starting checkpoint so you won't warp to the zoomer one.

**- Not waiting long enough for the idle deload itself**
If you start moving even one frame too early then the idle deload won't have occurred and moving will have broken it. If that happens you can just retry again.

**- Waiting too long, letting the idle animation play while not idle deloading**
This should never happen anymore with the new method of idle deloading where you just hold a button but it's still "something that can go wrong". So if you let the idle animation play while not triggering the glitch, it'll just store current level again, so that'll completely fuck the trick up, at that point you'd need to restart it all.

Pay attention to all those specific points and compare your attempt to a recording of your failed one. If you're still not clear what went wrong ask in the discord for more help.

02.7 - Fire canyon skip

# FCS guide (by Stellar)

This guide is aimed at anyone looking to learn Fire Canyon Skip (FCS) from scratch, so most of the strats here will not be the fastest but they will be the ones i find to be most consistent/easy. I would also recommend looking at the guides by Louigi & Bobbykaze in addition to this one.
FCS is a hard skip, so you will need to practice a lot before you can expect to complete a full FCS in practice and then in a run.

The 4 main parts of FCS are (in order):

- 1st Box: This is an orb crate on the first bridge in Fire Canyon, the hardest part of the entire skip. 
- 2nd Box: This is an orb crate on the second bridge in Fire Canyon, arguably the easiest of these 4 parts.
- Ramp: A ramp that requires fairly precise stick timing and a lot of practice to bypass.
- Eco Crates: Two stacks of Dark Eco crates that must be destroyed in order to continue. Fairly easy, but should be practiced for consistency.
I would recommend concentrating your practice on Ramp, then 2nd Box/Eco Crates, then 1st Box. If you can't complete the rest of FCS, then you are wasting attempts that get past 1st Box.

# History of the skip

Fire canyon skip or FCS is a skip that has been in the works and has gone through 2.5 different variations on ways to perform it. Currently the skip still remains non rta viable.

FCS has made a lot of progress since the first version which required over 200 invisible/visible ledge grabs to get far enough into fire canyon to perform an idle deload which allowed you to spawn at the end of fire canyon. The current version of FCS (FCS V2.5) however, uses a completely different method to reach the end.

While brainstorming possible ideas on what ways could in theory work I remembered a video made by TyrianSR of a glitch performed at the end of fire canyon that allowed you to infinitley bounce on the hot surface. This glitch was found by Piggleberry and became the second method of performing the skip through complicated testing.

The current way it is performed is done by spawning at the start of fire canyon then in 3 frame windows jumping far enough to reach past a certain point into the hot surface to start the infinite bouncing (thanks to Kuitar).

The problem with this method is that jak will try to bounce towards solid ground (orb crates, precursor ramps, dark eco boxes, ect) but thankfully I was able to route a way to avoid these and make it to the end. Sadly there are 4 parts along the route which make it not rta likely (the orb crate on the first bridge, orb crate on the 2nd bridge, precursor ramp right after the 2nd/3rd bridges, and dark eco boxes after the ramp).

If a way to make these sections easier was found this skip would easily be rta viable and save minutes off the 24 minute any% speedrun.

04.1 - One Cycle plants

I am known for my very detailed understandings/explanations of tricks so I thought I would start posting my guides in order to allow for further access to them.

Once you develop some basic Zoomer control (knowing how to use square to have better control + general controlled driving) this One Cycle Plants tutorial should be all you need to get on your way to building a path for consistency. As you get more comfortable you can speed up the process by using square less and less, but the pathing/lines shown here + the square tapping + clean turns are the fundamentals for success for this one in my opinion. 04.5 - How to get fast times in Dead Man's Gorge

Before doing the steps below, you may find it advantageous to remove all of the dark eco boxes from the race (if you destroy them they will not respawn when you enter the race again, so long as you stay on the same file and don't leave Precursor Basin).

Steps:

1.) Enter the race

2.) Go to the blue eco next to the pillar (this is the first blue eco that appears in the race)

3.) Collect the eco, and immediately afterwards hold brake on the zoomer (hold the X and square buttons simultaneously)

4.) While braking the entire time, go around the pillar, collecting the blue eco each time it respawns (braking ensures that you keep each eco)

5.) Do this until you have collected 6 total blue eco (including the first grab)

6.) Exit the race by going out of the entrance

7.) Go out a bit to give yourself some space to build speed, and then enter the race again (without braking)

8.) If done correctly, you will enter Dead Man's Gorge at maximum zoomer speed

9.) From here, you should be able to get otherwise impossible times on the course if you can manage to hold your eco until the finish line

Beginner noLTS boggy swamp routes

Boggy swamp has seen some changes recently, so now it is not advised for new runners to copy world record.

I have uploaded videos of Different boggy swamp routes/mechanics along with some backup information that will make this level much easier for a newer runner.

Easiest base route, no out of bounds, no boosteds and no flutflut. Once you understand this you are ready to build onto it and add more tricks/skips. (Difficulty 3/10)

pick up rest of orbs before cell, then get cell 4.

Sandover village 1

first sf in house. first 2 yakows, go to forbidden jungle

Forbidden jungle

get 2 nearest orbs, get orbs on cliff and 2 on bridge, drop down and do fishing game.
follow river to get to launcher. do not get first scout fly.
launcher then locked door.
roll to machine and knock mirror down.
get sf drop down to cell in ocean.
get orbs in water then sf [if not gotten] lanch up, and do first mirror. 
then do second mirror and get orbs and sf
roll to the two out of the way orbs.
roll over gap to temple and get sf outside temple.
climb tower, get all orbs 1 more sf then top of tower cell.
do temple
on plant boss, take damage and first and third phase to make it quicker
get 5 orbs jumping on plant boss head.
remember 2 launchers for 10 orbs each.
with blue eco from plant boss launcher, drop down and pick up orbs in locked floor thing.
get sf you missed earlier and orbs, then death warp.
do third mirror then troll jump.
take damage on lurker and dark eco box for second death warp.
do fourth mirror, then get last orbs. last sf.
second death warp.
drop down bridge backwards, orbs then final mirror. return to sandover village.

sandover village 2

3 yakows, yakow cell, sf in yakow man hut.
jump up collect blue eco then get locked floor thing
speak to mayor twice, get sf in mayor hut. 
talk to uncle twice get cell.
go to boat, go to misty island

Misty island

get muse,
follow muse path and collect 2 blocks of orbs
knock down bone collect blue eco, get cell on pillar. 
go back, collect orbs then jump up to first sf.
collect orbs, then sf, and get up to cannon deck.
go down walkway, collect 2 clumps of orbs then back up. 
get cannon cell.
use cannon to blow up boxes in arena
drop down get dark eco cell and orbs.
get arena orbs.
exit arena and collect orbs at entrance.
jump up and collect orbs and sf
roll jump down to beach and collect orbs and lue eco
get to locked floor thing. get sf on boat then cell on boat.
climb walkway and get remaining orbs and sf.
roll down and get on zoomer.
kill zeplins [hah], do 3 jumps for orbs, cell and sf. get orbs behind bones.
get zeppelin cell. then exit zoomer.
follow path round, climb up get final orbs and final sf.
jump down to boat and exit misty island.

Sandover village 3 

get to sculptor, give him muse.
roll jump down and pick up 1 sf nearest to water.
enter beach.

Sentinel beach.

get blue eco, get first sf.
pick up orbs then trigger bird cutscene.
go to lighthouse and do lighthouse climb. get cannon cell.
use to cannon to kill bird, and all the locked boxes.
mega extended to the nearest pillar pick up orbs 
mega extended to next pillar and pick up blue eco
collect orbs on beach with blue eco and get cell at end of beach
pick up orbs on stairs with blue eco.
climb up and over and get orbs by waterfall.
jump down and get orbs at bottom of waterfall.
swim round and get sf.
go under the arch and get orbs, and punch up log on right twice.
get blue eco and scare gulls 1 and get sf.
jump down behind sf tower and get orbs.
scare gulls 2 and get cell.
scare gulls 3 and get orbs
get to blue eco vent and swim around pelican cell
get all orbs and open locked thing with blue eco
pick up pelican cell and locked floor thingy.
vent again and launch to sf and orbs.
get sf by jumping on knocked up wooden pillar. 
get green vents and cell. start damage buffering here
get seagull cutscene cell.
walk cliff, pick up sf with blue eco
open locked floor thing and knock down egg
jump down, can take 1 hit fall damage, and get bird cell.

jump back down, continue around and take lift up to final level
take moving platform round, and jump on falling platforms for orbs
continue around and get top of robot cell
skip to other cell then use blue eco to get orbs on poles
death warp
turn right and enter small spider area.
use yellow eco to break boxes
get cell at end, use launcher then fall into dark eco
get orbs on floor in this room, and gnawing lurker cell
climb back up to first yellow eco vent. get final 2 orbs on the way.
quad jump to cell in air and then exit spider cave with remaining eco.
use yellow eco to get hidden cell in vocanic crater

hidden cell then death warp
final 2 sf across pillars, then enter lava tube

all 50 orbs in first area, 2 sf
destroy balls
collect remaining sf

trigger yellow sage teleporter cutscene,
