^ True say.

seriously though, what you want just isn't going to happen battleonfan. Mostly because it wouldn't be a good thing as well as being more of a pain in the ass for everyone involved.

multiple people have explained to you at this point why you don't track every single version of every single game individually and at this point most people would've shrugged and gone "Ah, ok. Fair enough." but you're kinda content to ignore those explanations and push for a system nobody wants and probably should not have.

Take a look at say, the board for basically any older Resident Evil game if you'd like to see why what you're describing gets messy and unwieldy in a hurry. (sorry RE guys I love ya really)

e: of course as soon as I write that I go over there and I see they actually consolidated their platforms lately. Good work! I can't think of a better example off the top of my head unfortunately so uhhh, whoops.

i don't think you need to spend hundreds of dollars to get toy story 2 to run on a computer, just a hunch.

There isn't really a better one. This is by and large the most elegant system you can implement for something as complex as this. Leaderboards have drop down menus if you'd like to compare within your own version and if seeing 2nd place on your profile because some guy has a faster run on a faster version really gets to you then...I dunno what to tell you dude, that sounds like a personal problem.

part of the problem seems to be taking speedruns and the rankings on it way more seriously than anyone actually should. Chill a little, it's playing video games fast on the internet, you can make your own pace if you like, but you also have to accept that not everyone is going to bend over backwards to accommodate what you're specifically doing. This is kinda the best most of us can do, if this displeases you, try a game where this isn't a problem because there's plenty of those like do you know how many games there are to run its crazy

there isn't a failure in logic here, you're playing video games quickly on the internet. If you care about rankings, pick the fastest version and go. If you don't, then shit what do you even care?

you clearly do seem to care about rankings, so play the fastest versions of your games! Go forth and acquire speed, young one. Like it's clear to me you already know what you care about, but just aren't willing to play ball for some reason? You're making this kinda difficult on yourself for no reason I can work out.

If your objection is purely on sr.c lumping together multiple versions regardless of their speeds, that varies wildly by game, category and is not something you can apply broad strokes to because games are complex and nuanced, as are their communities. If multiple versions are lumped together, but there is one clear fastest version, maybe the community only deems that one really worth running on? If they separate, then they separate and track WRs. It all comes down to what a game's community thinks is best for itself, you can't extrapolate a few games out to the entire speedrunning community because speedrunning is ridiculously varied. Often, in games that lack a good IGT to null version differences, this is just the best solution that exists, you can't track every version without splitting the community really hard for no gain, so it makes sense to just pare it down to a standardised version, this is usually the fastest version of a given game because SPEEDrunning. You seem to be chasing a perfect solution. It doesn't exist. You may rest.

man I hate serious posting it's playing video games fast fer chrissake

e: did you seriously compare someone posting telling you not to care about version differences affecting leaderboard rankings to people committing suicide over cyber-bullying? What exactly went through your head when you wrote that?

I did the needful. It looks fucking great.

10/10 stuff, Trey.

also is there a reason we don't have you in the speedrunner discord for this game or what? I'll PM you an invite on the freedom planet forums or something because sr.c's messaging system is a myth.

e: you can even make it scroll so I did so it imitates the title screen even closer

The logos are good but they need to be transparent before I throw them up there because then I can mess with the colours around the logo and everything else because we're still using the sort of dreary basic grey colour scheme sr.c defaults to.

also i totally forgot we had no background

Cool work, Trey.

I had no idea Tricheur meant "cheater", wow. That's uh...quite a conclusion to jump to there!

Yeah, saying someone "doesn't do their job as a mod" when the guy is actually doing extra work retiming stuff for the game's timing rules is at absolute best pretty rude and at worst staggeringly ignorant. Post in the actual game's forum or contact an involved party first next time (or exercise basic reading comprehension, one of the three) before making posts calling people cheaters and mods lazy on the main forum, it's not a great look.

It's pretty easy to tell what's going on there if you actually look at every OTHER run on the board. Every single run has about a 7-9 second discrepancy between their split times and the time on the leaderboards because its easier to take splits if you time from hitting New Game, but presumably the mod of the game is removing the time spent in those little tutorial menus at the start of the game and actually timing from the first input, i.e traditional SDA timing because Aladdin is an old enough game that it would have those timing rules.

It's fine. Jymotion clearly knows what he's doing.

i would be surprised if i'm wrong about this

edit: I'm definitely right about this because it's written in the damn rules on the game's page

"Timing begins on the first frame the player is able to move."

Ding ding ding. I mean, I figured it out without reading the very blatant and obvious explanation but still it's totally there.

Game Name: Freedom Planet System: PC Category: Lilac Any% Gameplay Estimate : 0:55:00 Ending/Bonus Estimate: nothin really Possible Donation Incentives: nope Sample run video: Description: Technical, fast and fluid-looking platformer with some cool looking trick, skip, zip or quick kill happening constantly, this run has little-to-no downtime during it and keeps constant high pace throughout. It's a very stylish looking game that's been received well at past marathons.

It didn't make any difference to the run, so I'm going with "It stays". In the same way I eventually let Samuca using "Self-View" ride because it also makes basically no difference though neither should be repeated because that could come back to bite a runner in the ass hard but I'm also not taking the runs down because no advantage was gained using either.

if you really must, you can think of the 32:41 I did on the JP version as being the "true" world record but the board will remain unchanged

While I have no way of going back and checking the settings, I don't think you're wrong because no, I shouldn't have 18 bullets there and I think that probably happened from me forgetting to change my settings back from when I was briefly running UFO. However, because it was a mistake made in total ignorance that's only been caught months later I'm going to make a case for letting it ride because it made absolutely no difference to the run because I wasn't even aware of it.

Alt School: total number of shots I should have: 18 (12 from box, 6 already in the gun when you pick it up) total I have because I probably just forgot to change settings from UFO: 24

Splithead: -6 (fucked up and shot one early) total number of shots I should have: 12 total I have : 18

Hospital: Nurse Kill: -2 Extra Box: +12 Shots I should have: 22 Shots I do have: 36

Twinfeeler: -6 (clean one cycle) Shots I should have: 16 Shots I do have: 30

Floatstinger: -15 (!!!!) Shots I should have: 1 Shots I do have: 21

Sewer Door: -1 Shots I should have: 0 Shots I do have: 20

and then the shotgun isn't fired for the rest of the whole run

It very, VERY barely made absolutely no difference. Barely. Kinda lucky, honestly.

the Good+ one it also probably makes bugger and all difference because you pick up a ton of extra ammo in the school but I haven't counted because eh good+

Slightly more interesting implication though is the fact that Easy apparently just works by setting bullet adjust to 2x or something, because 3x bullet adjust on easy should logically produce 36 bullets a box if the base value on Easy is 12 but it instead produces 18? sh1 is a weird game

There a reason absolutely no-one seems to run the PAL version of the game?

"I hold the SQUARE (button) when I use the L1 and R1 to perform the quick turn for Harry did not rush out to the sides. "

i tried this just now and it totally fucking works holy shit I'm an asshole, I'm so sorry. Fuck. Wow. Honestly, nobody else knew this, we were just pushing L1 and R1 raw which has a horrible habit of doing whatever the hell it likes because the running strafe has fast startup. Holding square apparently makes it work way WAY easier because walking strife takes forever to start, I did not know this. I don't think anyone knew this but you. Legit good find, I'm really sorry I confused good speedtech for cheating.

"In this case, YES, I HAVE to use Xpadder."

Fair enough, I did press you for more details when you brought it up but it was probably just a wacky miscommunication as usual. No big deal I dun fucked up again.

And yeah, I grant you what I said about self-view was "It's not technically allowed but I don't think anyone would care" and then I kinda randomly backpedaled on that and suddenly began caring because I just kinda changed my mind? Just for the sake of consistency, it's still not technically allowed but I'll put the runs back up because I honestly feel like a total fucking twat right now. But don't use it on a NG run in future because it was never technically allowed by the rules of the category I just don't think it infers any real advantage but I'm kinda going by letter of the rules rather than spirit.

dear diary today I got wrecked, signed Punchy.

e: do you still have the 32:57 run that I rejected for quickturn macro that then vanished? I didn't reject it because not enough time was being saved and I'd be happy to put it back up if you still have it.

I was gonna make this thread myself but you beat me to it.

Genuine question, can you read your own run's rejection notes? I've explained multiple times in those but I'm not sure if you're just totally ignoring them or if you just can't see them.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt I'll explain again, they're being rejected for now because me and a couple of others are fairly certain they're slightly cheated using a quickturn macro that you yourself admitted to using via XPadder on my stream chat like a month back (why did you tell me that) and then tried to play off as a joke. Having actually seen your runs now, I kinda didn't believe it was a joke. You literally do not drop a single quickturn across every single run you've done of this game, which given how the best runners of this game seem to screw it up pretty often is at bare minimum pretty suspect and at worst a huge red flag.

Other reasons include that the Bad+ and Good+ times were using the "Self-View" option which is only available on NG+ and is not valid for use in NG runs. I told you this when you first asked about it, actually and apparently you just ignored me.

I was content to kinda just leave it as is under the assumption that you'd stop after the first two times I told you to stop using it even though every existing time you had on the board was using it and just leave it at that because you really don't need it to get better, but you kept submitting times using it so I just took down your runs for the time being until shit got sorted. Your runs aren't gone, they're just kinda in limbo for the time being. I don't get why you insist on using it, you're not bad at this game you really don't need it to post good times.

tl;dr drop the quickturn macro and I'd be happy to verify any future PB's you achieve

Same, I had a great time and the whole thing went over really goddamn well from the looks of things. Frankly, I'm really impressed with how smoothly everything went down, I was kinda under the impression it was going to be a clusterfuck from how small-scale it seemed to be but you and Planks are apparently organisational wizards so major props for that.

Feedback stuff:

Had no idea we were getting kicked out like on the dot at 6 on the last day but I don't think anyone did so I don't blame anyone for it but still, fucked with Zoton's run and was a little disappointing but if we can get a 24 hour space next time it won't be a problem anymore.

Feedback about Insomnia:

i don't know to what degree it's worth complaining about some of this stuff here but since you asked

Medical room was really fucking hard to find. Like unacceptably hard to find, I spent a hour and asked about five different people all of whom gave me different incorrect directions before I had to stop one of them and actually ask them to physically lead me there because I was actually in something of a hurry and I was getting fucked around. It didn't end up causing many problems in the end other than wasting my time but if the situation was more desperate it could've been really fucking bad. I can definitely prepare myself better next time so it shouldn't be a problem for me specifically but man I feel sorry for anyone else who has to deal with that shit in future.

Showers way too far from campsite. Do not make it hard for historically hygiene-adversed demographic to shower, this is a recipe for smelly disaster. Camping in general honestly kind of sucks to deal with, I hope they do have mass housing next time or fuck just the 24-hour space if I can find a desk to sleep under because I would sleep virtually anywhere else.

Future plans:

Three a year probably is a bit much, I know I'd be unlikely to make the April one at any rate. I'd try but the timing will probably clash with university stuff so I'm not holding my breath.

It's a 2000 model, but I don't own component cables myself so I'm taking you up on that offer, cheers dude. Lightens my own load a fair bit, although if anyone was banking on me bringing the ps3 to run on or something now's the time to speak because I don't really have a reason to bring it otherwise.

Sconosciuto
EnglandPunchy9 years ago

This probably comes on frustratingly short notice, but how are we for capturing gameplay off a PSP? I initially asked to do my run on PS3 just because it was the only thing I tried it on but I found out fairly recently the PSP version of Silent Hill is way faster so it would be a lot better to run on at a marathon and it would make my estimate even safer since I bumped it up to accommodate PS3's long loads.
