Some minor idea: after the last photo, use the time that the game freezes to turn back to your vehicle, that should save a few frames. You can either aim with CJ's camera or use the "normal" camera and then tap "aim" to do the actual turn.

no answer = no disaggreement My fault not pointing that out.

You might be implying that understanding how it works is unnecessary. Think about the things that could go wrong and make that understanding pay off. If you didn't, you should still read. ^^ a car "wanting to" go to the valets gets stuck e.g. by your own car - and never arrives -> remove the obstacles, if that doesn't work, have fun waiting for the D.A. for ages. :D you didn't push the valets far enough and they just stand there -> push them and when you "let go off them" look in the right direction

you only need to look at the right spot when all conditions are met, use the rest of the time for taking photos (you can use time after he spawns to keep traffic away from him). you can find improvements

I forgot something in my first post: the reference point I use for pushing them is: push them from the side until they reach the wall.

Edit: S made a video tutorial. You should still read my posts for more details.

Part in italics can be skipped if you are uncurious.

This strat is a collaborative effort. "Any", Lighnat0r, Josh and myself were involved. Any had the initial idea of manipulating the D.A spawn location, Lighnat0r found out how the game determines the D.A. re-spawn location. I found out the traffic light stuff and conditions that make him re-spawn and how to satisfy them by reading the mission script and memory watching via Cheat Engine. No, this was not worth skipping.

First watch the video to get confused. The actual explanation is in text form but it helps if you have seen it once. Ded link, video gone

The D.A. can re-spawn, most of the time he does using current strats. As soon as certain conditions are true, he is re-spawned to a specific location that depends on where you look (you read right).

Spawning locations: https://i.imgur.com/cyebIiS.png

Where to look at: You want respawn locations 2 or 3, depending on where he has to wait less for traffic lights. For location 2, look at the right red ellipse only; for location 3, look at both. https://i.imgur.com/2Qbaq4m.jpg

Edit:
I use a heuristic in my runs: when the valet in the ZR waits for the red light and then gets to the garage quickly, I block one spot, if he takes some time or I am slow, I block both.
It works because Rockstar doesn't want you to see him spawn so they added a check of whether you look at the place they want him to spawn. If you do, he spawns at alternative locations. They messed it up, though: Originally, they wanted him to spawn at the right ellipse so that's where they check. Then, they changed the spawn location but forgot adapting check. Good job, Rockstar! :D

Conditions

 1. no-one is driving towards the parking service with the intent of using it
 2. at any one point in time, both valets have to not stand, simultaneously, e.g both are running at the same time / one is driving, one is running / etc. Then the condition is met, indefinitely, period.

Satisfying the conditions About 1) Short version: During the ZR-valet waiting time, park a car into the parking space to fool the game past a delay of the D.A. re-spawn that Rockstar put in there. For it to work, it can't be a taxi/Cabbie, Bobcat, bike, or cop car [incomplete, but should be enough]. The parking space is in-between these two CJs: https://i.imgur.com/SMq8kwg.png https://i.imgur.com/DkYchVV.png

About 2) This is the crazy part: if you push the valets while waiting for the valet in the ZR to enter the car park, then they won't run back "home" right away. They start running as soon as you are waiting for the D.A. This satisfies condition 1 (both are not standing). If you push them when they are facing you, they jump back, it is better if you push them from the side (you face their side, anyways). If you are too fast, you can hurt them, wasting time and risking a wanted level.

Back to the optimal re-spawn location: We want him to spawn at a location where he has to wait for traffic lights the least. He idles for 10s after spawning, so accomplishing that isn't child's play.

The visual cue for the right timing? Other traffic lights. While waiting for the ZR valet, you might be busy pushing the other valets, so use the traffic lights on the way from Doherty to the hotel:

When you see a North/South light change from green to red, then location 2 is ideal for the next 9s. After that, location 3 for the next 18s, after that, location 2 for the next 15s and then it loops. Table: https://i.imgur.com/GJ84JpG.png

Edit: The cancel button fixed it - I then clicked "100%" and then "any%". Edit2: it doesn't happen anymore... Interesting...

ff / ie work fine It doesn't happen on gtavc, gtaiii.

The reloading also happens on speedrun.com on Vimprobable (an irrelevant browser, too few users), "based on the WebKit engine" (I know of some relevant browsers using a fork or sth of WebKit but I don't know how similar, etc), but, IIRC, it doesn't load anything there (screen stays white).
A lot of people don't want to post because of a ban in their country.
ban = unwatchable due to copyright

Dropbox streaming example (there is no file size limit or anything :D):

On second thought, I am not sure if you want to go through the trouble of installing Dropbox and encoding yourself, some video streaming service that doesn't care about copyright is probably better.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

A lot of people don't want to post because of a ban in their country. I suggest mirroring to Dropbox or something similar if you want everyone to be able to watch it.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

Don't read it then. The pictures are enough.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

Edit: I don't know if people already do that, but since if you are good, the two seconds gap between each photo should be enough to aim at the next photo, but the first one needs to be done as fast as possible. Therefore, you need to start with the fastest one, which is the one that you can aim or zoom at the fastest.

I have put some work into this. Also, roughly 5 of the photos are from Powdinet.

format: <mission> COLON <where to stand> COLON <which op> DOUBLE-DASH <old route> (world record, I have it on my drive) 555: waiting area: building -- ice cold killa drive [Powdinet] pimping: burger shot -- forgot [Powdinet] mountain cloud: at alley: super market -- forgot

T-Bone Mendez: next to fcr: Xoomer -- Outrider, near naval base

Photo Opportunity: main road bridge -- Outrider, near naval base

Outrider: 2 near Sanchez:

 1. nrg garage --micro-- up close
 2. those white gas "containers" (probably that's what they are) --micro-- near Outrider end destination

1 near Patriot: ship -- micro-- near Naval base

the run stops on the way to road block 1, I take all at the first road block also: church --micro--intersection near third road block

after Hashbury parking: construction billboard --micro-- way to Hashbury parking

Pier: Pier sign -- after a race (both are waiting time, you have 2s for the photo but that is easier than all three post-race photos, when you fail you can still do it then)

twisted path property: end of a tunnel in the North -- Ice Cold Killa drive [Powdinet]

During 555, there seam to be a whole lot of Remingtons driving around at night time. But: Cheetah spawns: 6-22 Poor (remington): 22-6 That's great. -.- Well, maybe we can both time zones, we need tp start it at 21 or something. Too bad that there is no finer time manipulation than saving (6h).

Anyways, I'm for using 15s during Ryder to buy Pizza and using the 555 waiting time to hunt for Remingtons.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

I wanted to post that Cesar Vialpando thing. D: Seriously, though, if you run fast enough then you can run or jump (jump, then immediately pick up) on top of the Voodoo while picking up the phone and drop from it while putting it back in.

I need to time if picking up the phone is slower with jump than without.

I found that attempting to get in a car after buying a drink lets you buy another one right away, maybe that is useful for 100%.

Buying 8 big Pizzas durimg Ryder only costs 15s, sprunk stuff might be faster (during Outrider, maybe, I improved some of the photos), the 555 we tip manipulation strat saves more than 15s . I am for using the 555 waiting time for looking for cars, though.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

I decided not to try to make the clip to the roof more consistent when I found that it only saves ~2s.

One big climb and multiple small climbs take equally long (under 200ms difference, so I can't tell). I compared one big climb to small climbs that use the very small things (are they called packages?) and the ones of middle size. Therefore, don't go out of your way to do multiple small climbs.

Getting armour costs ~8.5s compared to skipping it when using the route without climbing. The quick and dirty climbing timing showed a four seconds difference.

The "quick big climbs" happen based on distance, I found a couple of reference points. You need a media player supporting subtitles since they contain the relevant things. In VLC, press V to enable them or use the menu (Subtitles -> Sub Track).

Download (30 MB)

It is incomplete, maybe one of you feels like completing it. ^^ Else, I will, in a week. Maybe.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

The times are straight: 24.85 swerving: 25.17 That is very, very roughly speaking 0.5 seconds per minute or 0.5 minutes per hour. I would call that a big difference. This is a test at top speed, we also need tests for places where one accelerates.

I doubt that swerving is that common in runs (everyone's or just mine?) - though I am not sure. I believe I "de-spawn" almost everything and keep in the middle of the road to avoid those cars spawning right in front of me. Those cars that I dodge, I do or should (what I should do is what counts) turn slightly for, not strongly right in front of them.

There was a chat conversation between someone who had a retail version and zoton and he said that the person's and the Steam version barely differed. -> Try zoton's converter on your version and see what it says. After the conversion, it checks if your files are identical to those of the Japanese version.

http://www.speedrun.com/tools/vc_jp_converter_ub42v.zip

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

(Edit: I updated this to a mini guide about dealing with settings in general. The screenshots are at the end of the post.)

There are four ways: Method 1) If you have a set file you would like to keep using, you can convert it. (Link is under 2) ). Method 2) If you don't have any set file but still have the international version installed, you can create a new set file with it and then convert it.

Just run this to convert your current set file to JP and vice versa converter direct download

Method 3) If [you prefer this method or] you have neither a set file with all the settings nor an international game, you can use American text in the Japanese version (this is forbidden to do in runs, though!):

Step 1) download Japanese_american.gxt Step 2) navigate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\TEXT Step 3) backup Japanese.gxt, name Japanese_american.gxt to Japanese.gxt When done configuring, undo changes done in 3).

Method 4) Don't mess with anything and just use the Japanese game and some screenshot of the American counterpart on your second monitor: English menu screenshots

The only versions known to me where starting Hit the Courier and Distribution don't crash the game are the japanese PC and PS2 version and a German version by a company called "Green Pepper". The latter doesn't have rampages without an uncensored no-CD gta-vc.exe, which counts as modding and is therefore banned.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

That's not the only factor though: what about the success rates?

I guess, you can't get out of the tank and let a replay extinguish the fire after the crash? Under what conditions does that trick work?

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

You need to set a bunch of Windows settings to US. Watch this screencast to know where the buttons you need to press are (German, but the positions should be very similar). I have already had a US layout added and didn't set it as default because I only do that before playing VC.

GermanyPatrick_10 years ago

It allows instantly completing Distribution (or "ice cream mission" as that version calls it) by starting it during Hit the Courier. Doing that over and over is the new method of "obtaining" the required assets.

Since it doesn't have a censored language that lets you disable(censor) and enable rampages by switching between censored and uncensored languages, you need to disable them via Taxi Driver or Vigilante (luck factor) to get a rampage replay without triggering the rampage. An alternative is making a replay of the molotov rampage that lets you drown yourself after starting it and making the rampage replay.

You'll love it. ;)

There is already a 7 assets category. It still allows replays (including duping Jury Fury and clothes replays during Cherry Popper) but bans skipping assets. Almost no one runs it. Feel free to run with whatever rules you like, though - what would stop you?^^

See the 7 assets leaderboard for the wr route.
