Why can't I get wave dash to work?

I watched OddBod's movement tutorial and a couple of runs of the first chapter, so I wanted to try it out for myself, but it doesnt work as advertised :(

OddBod says "when you first hit the ground [the cooldown] is already expired". Here the timestamp in the video: .

However when I try the wave dash in certain situations, it simply doesn't work that way. Here an example: https://media.giphy.com/media/B1buFt0dh5bYcWlZBQ/giphy.gif I get the wavedash, but the hair are still blue. I had around 20 successful attempts at the wave dash and my hair was blue every single time, so i couldn't do the up dash.

In other situations however i can get it to work.

  • Has there been a patch (I am on 1.2.1.11) which changed the behaviour?
  • Am I doing something wrong?
  • Is OddBod's explanation inaccurate?

" Has there been a patch (I am on 1.2.1.11) which changed the behaviour?"

No.

"Am I doing something wrong?"

Kinda.

" Is OddBod's explanation inaccurate?"

Kinda.

It depends on how far from the ground you are when you wavedash into it. You're pretty close in the gif, so you need to spend longer in contact with the ground after before you jump in order to get your dash back, you hit the ground before the cooldown expired. If your wavedash is spaced further apart from the ground, you'll get your dash back from basically mere contact, if you're close, you'll need to give it a moment. You don't always have the space to wavedash like that though, it's fine to do it close and then jump slightly after hitting the ground to get dash back.

You'll learn the timing as you play, it'll become intuitive faster than you'd expect.

Thanks for the explanation. I tried a bit more and it seems to help!

Tutorial is a bit outdated at this point, sorry if it is confusing. If you get your dash back or not depends on how long you wait to jump after the dash. So as Punchy said, if you are further away from the ground that helps, but just to be perfectly clear about this: It's not tied to the distance you travel, but to the timing of the jump. What happened in your clip is the time between the dash and the jump was too short, so you can fix that either by dashing earlier (and therefore further away from the ground) or jumping later. It should also be noted that you don't have to jump the moment you hit the ground, you can slide along the ground a bit too. As long as you are still considered dashing when doing the jump, you get a hyperdash. The timing for a hyperdash with regained dash is the same as a wavedash, they are conceptually the same thing.
