So, I edited the boards a bit with a few things:
-
Changed the description for the any% categories to simply complete the game as fast as possible instead of complete the game with any ending. Sounds less confusing and any ending implies that 100% counts as any% lol.
-
Added any% to NG/RS/IE category titles for the sake of consistency PogChamp
-
Listed Once Again as being acceptable as long as infinite weapons are not used and One Dangerous Zombie has not been unlocked under the rules.
Now, I almost forgot while editing that One Dangerous Zombie existed (thanks FurryWulfz for reminding me) so I made sure to add that. I know Lileya had an incident in the past with her run getting rejected for being played on Once Again which got resolved, but I feel it's okay to have your runs done on NG+ as long as you follow those two prerequisites. Once Again is mainly played for the cosmetic changes anyway and at best you'll lose a sec at the item box going for the FAS. :D
Also, in the process of updating runs for the boards so that the videos linked are up to date. Unfortunately, I might have to reject some due to the footage being lost :(
To me "any ending" made sense because this game does have several different endings and anything can be considered any% (as long as you beat the game, that's the prerequisite). So, actually, 100% can be any% as well... If I decided to submit my 100% run into the any% category, it would be fine (it would be stupid, but it would be fine in theory!)
Like I remember verifying a run from a guy that decided to save Barry (but not Chris) and that was still any%.
Just my 2 cents!
Talking of changes, I added the "FPS variable" to Chris doorskip PC categories a few weeks ago now but nobody commented on it. Should we just go for it and add it to all PC categories, Roo? It seems we're the only 2 mods that care to make changes to the boards! XD
Thanks for taking care of that, Roo! :)
I know what you mean, Lileya. RE doesn't make the greatest use of the standard speedrun categories so practically any% could apply to all possible endings. It's why we have to figure out a way to constitute each % denominator so that it makes sense in-game and manages to stay within the criteria of the completion percentage without being arbitrary. I only simplified it since I was looking at the RE1 boards and used that as a basis. I'm open to any change to the category names as long as anyone else is okay with it.
We might as well add the variable in for PC since it's important for players to know how much of an impact FPS plays into games. The only problem will be trying to set the appropriate variable for each run especially the ones from last year. It's hard to tell the difference between 60/Variable due to video output not going above 60 FPS unless you know the runner is fully aware of variable being faster and is using it.
Saved the day because Roo was about to delete all of your runs with his potsiness! OpieOP (just kidding :P)
Variable FPS added to all PC categories. I defaulted every run to "variable (120 FPS)". I'm aware that not all runs posted were on variable, but I'm not about to try to figure out each and every run's FPS. Please edit your run with the proper FPS, or let me know so I can change it for you.
It seems RE3 uses "as fast as possible" as well, so I guess that must be something common (or everybody copied each other...) Bad ending/good ending works for me all well, but we've been using any%/100% since the beginning now so I'm not super comfy with changing the names of the categories. So far nobody was really confused about how it works.
Probably best bet to leave everything as is. I've already completed going through the entire board to make sure every video got updated with a new Twitch/YT link :D
There haven't been too many cases of good ending being submitted in the wrong category or even Barry only being saved. I don't think there should be too much confusion for what ending needs to be achieved for any%. Have you guys at the RE1 boards had anyone mistakingly save Barry before? :o
Does anyone know if Once Again has the knife in your starting inventory still if you don't unlock any of the bonus weapons? I totally forgot that Once Again isn't a viable way to start up a knife run, so I need to make sure! If not, I'm just gonna remove the Once Again/NG+ disclaimer altogether for Knife Only and make it mandatory that it has to be done on New Game.
In retrospect, it made much more sense before I decided to add that carelessly for knife only. FailFish orz
If you don't unlock any of the bonus weapons with Jill, the handgun will be in the first spot and the knife in the 2nd spot of your inventory as usual. I can't confirm 100% for Chris but I can only imagine it would work the same (knife in first spot).
Seriously, I think we're splitting hairs here.... >_>
If somebody absolutely want to use Jill's skank costume or Chris' rapper costume for a knife only run with the Rocket launcher in their inventory, as long as it's never used and deposited in the item box ASAP, I don't see an issue. The only instance that NG+ saves time if I remember correctly is for Jill 100% because the knife will sit in the default spot of your item box when you'll retrieve it before BT (if my old lady's memory serves me right). And we're talking about a save of like half a second..... and you'll lose more time if you want to retrieve the FAS in the item box because you'll have to press down twice to retrieve it.
I should've been a little more specific with my question pertaining to Jill. Her knife gets replaced with the bonus weapon so you literally have to detour to get it back before you kill the dog. I just wasn't sure what the inventory was like if you didn't happen to unlock the Samurai Edge or Rocket Launcher (I assumed the game would put the costume key in place of Jill's knife in this case), which is why I put the disclaimer about it being ill-advised.
Anyway, sorry about that! I'll settle down with the editing. (I blame it on VGMdb editor status kicking in again :( )
That's what I meant, if somebody wants to lose time (i.e. go to their item box) just to wear a different costume, let them do it. All we need to do is keep the rules clear. Either we allow "Once Again" to be used in the low%, any% and 100% categories (all together) or we don't (for any of those categories). That's the only argument to have IMHO.
And seeing as we allowed it in the past (and not just for me, for other players as well), I feel we can't backtrack now otherwise we'd make certain runs illegitimate.
There is a way to avoid that. Like Roo said, anyone wanting to use costumes without the messed up inventory could simply idle their console on the Helipad so the timer goes past whatever the threshold for unlocking the RL is, then finish the run. Then they have a save file for Once Again, the costumes they desire, and no Rocket Launcher or need to bank additional items in the boxes / reroute. The costumes aren't worth the trouble really, though this is a permanent solution for anyone who likes to vary costumes up.
Something I am curious about, is One Dangerous Zombie. In the Discord earlier we asked Carci if ODZ is okay on Rocket Launcher and he said it is fine. So, is it just fine for RL and RL alone, in that case? Up until now, I was under the impression ODZ was a no-no altogether, mostly because of what happened before, where some runs got rejected because of a mixup regarding Once Again, with them thinking that meant ODZ was activated.
ODZ is an alteration to gameplay. Zombie Forest has different A.I. than regular zombies, so I don't feel it should be allowed in low%, any% or 100% (specially since he's really easy to avoid and will never fall asleep). However, just like Carci, I don't see a problem with allowing it in the real NG+ category, it is a NG+ feature afterall.
So your point is we should allow Once Again into any%, low%, 100% but not if the person already acquired the Rocket or the infinite ammo gun? I mean, I already said that but, we're seriously just splitting hairs here.... Then we also end up with a grandfather clause type situation: newer runs won't be allowed to have the RL in their inventory but older runs will be unless we make them illegitimate.
Anyway, I'm not the boss here, just a mod stating my opinion. So if everybody else thinks this practice shouldn't be allowed anymore, then we just won't allow it anymore.
We didn't mean "Once Again should not be allowed if X". I think it's just a case of miscommunication.
Me and Roo were talking about Once Again in the Discord and trying to figure out how to like, make Once Again work in Knife Only. Since the dogs have to be killed, but choosing Once Again causes you not to have the Knife at all so it doesn't really work (you lose like 15+ secs pretty much detouring) unless you do what we suggested above; just idle at the helipad and avoid unlocking the RL entirely. So you then have a permanent Once Again save with no additional time loss caused on any category except the extras in the box.
I think maybe it just came across wrong, but Roo or I never tried to insinuate we shouldn't allow Once Again.
And that makes sense regarding ODZ.
Well, that was rather a bad idea on my part and I didn't think it thoroughly at the time. I had to ask since I started up Once Again as Jill earlier and thought I could do a knife run in a different outfit even with the bonus weapons, but then realized I had to completely detour. Pretty much why I put in the disclaimer to not recommended as Jill due to time loss. Anyone's welcome to submit their time in either mode regardless, but I thought it would be nice to put a heads up in case someone decides to do their first knife run as Jill with a new costume or whatever. Kind of like how I put the variable disclaimer even though that's a whole different realm and not really comparable, but still has to do with time efficiency.
So, no, I don't want to have to reinstate that Once Again has to be unlocked via these methods. As long as you follow the two rules for it in their respective categories you're okay. As for ODZ, I asked since I was watching someone's rocket launcher run for verifying and I could hear Forest in the background lol. I had to make sure with Carci since I don't follow RL runs at all.
My bad if I misunderstood.
Like I said though, all we need to do is make the rules clear. What people decide to do or not to do after that isn't our problem as long as they follow the rules.
