The Basic Speedrunning Guide to Instant Dungeon

In this guide, I'll be going through the basic things you need to know in order to make the game easier, as well as getting better times.

This is in no way a final product, I still have a lot to work on, and the finished version of the guide will have more structure. I've just wanted to jot down my ideas for now.]

Items: 

Dagger - There's not too much to say about this item. Can come in handy in earlier levels, but it's pretty inferior after level 8 or so. In the first few levels though, you're definitely going to want to hold onto one of these or an axe over a shield. These levels can be completed a lot faster, and oftentimes killing a monster rather than deflecting it will be a much quicker method.

Axe - Again, hold onto these in the beginning especially. Pretty useful throughout all levels, due to the limitless amount of kills you can get with it in one throw. 

Shield - Your second best friend. Only time not to hold onto one of these is in the very beginning of the run. Any other time, you definitely want this as your main item.

Helmet - Your best friend. This item starts appearing at level 8, and will be your guardian angel in any successful run. If your helmet is destroyed at any point in time, make sure you have a shield, and then setting out to find another should be your main goal. It may take a little extra time to seek one out, although having the protection of a helmet will allow you to improve your time by a ton.

Fire Scroll - Basically like a double axe attack. At the point these start showing up, shields are going to become generally more valuable, but you may want to make an exception every once in a while to hold onto one.

Pumpkin Head - Great item to hold onto, regardless of your position (unless you're out of helmets.) A lot of times throwing one of these down an unexplored corridor is a good precautionary measure to take, so you can charge out ahead afterwards with a little more confidence that you'll be safe.

Hourglass - Positively the worst powerup for speedrunning. When playing the game normally, it may be a little bit different, but the hourglass is more likely to hurt you than help you in an SR. The only time when I could see someone using it is when the door to the next level is in sight, and you want to make it there before another monster does, or in the 6th boss battle.

Torch - These can be lifesavers in almost any situation, although by the time they start showing up, other items are going to become more valuable. I recommend putting it down as soon as you pick it up, just giving you a quick light source if needed.
