Following EZScape's recent(ish) video I figured it would be really amazing to have a proper, constantly updated 'Longest Standing WR' page in place. If given more exposure, long-standing WRs will be beaten one by one until only truly impressive runs remain standing, and then the title of "longest standing speedrun record" which is actually an incredibly cool title will actually mean something again. I feel like it could push a new kind of competition in the speedrun community with people racing to knock out all of the longest standing times, and even if it doesn't get as much attention as I'm hoping for when I write this, it would at least be a very neat statistic.
I'm not positive on how easy it is to implement, but I really do feel strongly about this feature having the potential for greatness.
It also might get people to try less popular games. I'm pretty sure the most "long standing" WRs are from some random meme game that has only 1 run.
I read this title, I instantly said "No".
I read this post, I thought "Okay, that's a bit different than what I expected. That's actually not a terrible idea."
Might need to be longest-standing untied world record to make it more interesting. Otherwise it would likely end up consisting mostly just be times that are completely impossible to improve on such as Dragster, and it would make it a little more interesting and useful. In any case, I like the idea.
I mean, you could give each game a "Best WR" score, and do something like Number of Active Players - Days WR Has Stood For, or something similar to that, this could help factor in competitiveness. Obviously, my example formula won't work, but some sort of algorithm can be made.
And yeah, untied records only sounds good to me.
"I mean, longest-standing or uncontested?"
...Why not both? You could have a filter to include or exclude uncontested records on the page. Some uncontested records might still be really challenging to beat, but obviously you have a point when you say that there is value in only showing records in games where there's actual competition.
And you could also have a tied/untied filter to handle the Dragster cases and have them show up only if you want them to.
And also, ILs obviously wouldn't be counted because of the sheer volume of uncontested WRs there I think. But maybe if it's not difficult to implement you could have a page for ILs too, it's not like it really hurts.
This is a great idea and I would love to see it implemented. Separate top 100s for official games and hacks should do the trick.
Seperating 'official' games from hacks won't do much. There are plenty of 'official' games which have little to no competition.
When I say a lot, I mean it. There are literally thousands of games on this site. Unless the number is going to be absolutely massive, there will always be a problem of inactive games spoiling the list.
Then I am sure we could come up with a sensible threshold for records to be featured in the two top 100s.
Hope this gets more reconsideration in the future, given that there is a way to implement it, ignore TWR's, etc.
As far as "inactive games" spoiling the list; it seems like that's sort of the point, isn't it? To give people a reason to play a game that they might not otherwise play. I dunno, seems like if there is an inactive game on the list, it would incentive people to try to beat the record, and thus eliminating it from the list.
I don't know, I think it's a pretty cool idea (if implemented correctly). I have no idea though how difficult it would be to actually make though, so I can't account for that.
Well, since this came back up, I actually started making something along these lines. Here's a link to a spreadsheet I'm maintaining that (will eventually) list every untied world record sorted by run date: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1H2D4_ZdS8T2jiMGXRRVnUaWC20TLKl_r6CSFOMp8Nuk
More info in this Reddit post I made about it last week: https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/8nopil/longeststanding_untied_world_records/
Nice. Yeah, I didn't think about runs without videos, uncontested's, and issues with subcategories. That makes it difficult, but it's an excellent starting point nonetheless, I already want to see if I can AquaRush when I get home.
not gonna lie @ShikenNuggets I love the idea of having this set up and I will use it to find new games to play and try to beat some records (also may or may not spend too much time looking for my personal WR's) ;)
Also I assume your list doesn't cover Misc. runs?
