Hey, new around here. I've been thinking about attempting some speedruns at some point but find it hard to get into because I don't know where to start.

Been gaming for most my life, so might as well try haha.

If you are playing games on your PC, recording the game play footage is super easy. Software like OBS can do this for ya. Recording game play from consoles requires (except PS4/Xbox1) some sort of capture card (which usually ain't too expensive unless it's HDMI).
