An Updated Guide For EiA Speedrunning
Updated 4 years ago by Amory

Hey there, Chances are, you're looking at this game, and thinking "Wow, this should be easy - it's just mashing your keyboard and pressing random numbers, I can get the first sub 8:00 for sure!" Well... that's where you're wrong. There is actually quite a few more steps than that, and I'll inform you about those extra steps in this quick and hopefully easy guide!

  1. Using the correct splits People tend to only use a singular timer and not use splits in their speedruns. In the past year in a half, we have heavily enforced a rule where you must provide a splits.io link in your submission otherwise you will be denied in a blink of an eye. That's why we provide a set of ready-made splits for you which you can find here. DISCLAIMER: These splits are intended for LiveSplit and will not work on any other timer.

You can then proceed to open your splits in LiveSplit, shown in this image.

1a) Uploading to splits.io Uploading to splits.io is fairly simple. You export your run's splits after completing a run and then following the steps in this image. Doing this should create a .lss file which will be used for splits.io. You go to the webpage, https://splits.io, and then drag and drop your splits, which should create a page with a 4 letter combination at the end. Your link should look like this: https://splits.io/xxxx After doing that, copy and paste the splits.io link in the box that marks "Splits.io link" when you submit a run.

  1. Routes Most routes in Emily is Away tend to take you to the same place, but Chapter 3 and 4 are the ones that change your game the most. The most common route is the Luzbelheim route, used to do his sub 8:30 run. You can find the Luzbelheim route here. I highly recommend memorizing the route instead of reading off of the pastebin, as it is more fair for the leaderboards and doesn't make it a complete free-for-all mashing competition. You could also create your own route and get creative, who knows :)

  2. Splits and Timings As shown in the game's rules, you start your timer on confirmation of your username and real name. You split when the text chat shows "emerly35 is away", and you call time when the screen fades to black after completion of Chapter 5. If you mis-split or call time too early or too late, the mods will retime your run and set your run to the correct time.

  3. Run-killers There is an easy way for runs to get killed in Emily is Away. There's a known glitch where, if you spam 1, 2 or 3 before the dialogue shows and the game registers it too early, you will not be able to respond to Emily. You will not be able to proceed without restarting the chapter, which will ultimately kill your run.

You can also kill your run by mis-routing on C2, C3 or C4, as it may take you a different direction and will also slow you down, giving you a low time.

  1. Equipment / software Due to the splits file and splits.io, we require you to use LiveSplit for your runs. The program NohBoard is also helpful as it shows your keystrokes on recording - this is also helpful if you don't have a camera, as we need visual proof that you are actually typing. A camera is not needed but is recommended - this also means that you do not need NohBoard.

This is basically all there is to know. Thanks for reading, and enjoy speedrunning!
