Description of some bugs and glitches in the floppy version of the game. It is to be noted that most of the bugs have been corrected in the CD-ROM version.

The "Infinite Spice" glitch (aka: Spice must underflow! ) It allows to make a bunch of spice shipments at once. To trigger the glitch, talk with Duncan and agree to make a Spice shipment to the Emperor. Go to the communication room to trigger the cut scene. When Duncan speaks again, click on "end dialogue". Use the communication device to see an already seen message. The cut scene triggers again, and with it a new shipment is made for the same amount of Spice, except the game doesn't check if your Spice stock is sufficient for it. Hence this is an interger underflow bug that can cause your spice stock to become more than 655000kg.

The "Duke doesn"t die" glitch (aka Long live the Duke!) This glitch is extremely easy to trigger on a second playthrough. You can trigger this bug in two ways. The first way is to let Gurney Halleck train Fremen before you return Harah home. You receive a message telling you to return to the Atreides Palace. Don't return to the Palace before triggering the next major event in the game, and the Duke will not leave. The second way is to use the "Gurney Halleck's bugs" (detailed below). In any case, the event of the Duke's death occurs normally, and the NPCs will talk about him like he's dead, except he's present in the Palace and can be talked to.

The "Gurney Halleck" glitch Thisglitch is a bit difficult to explain. There is a byte in the game memory that stores your progression in the game. The game events occuring in the game either set up the value to a fixed value or increment the value. For instance, meeting Chani and meeting Liet Kynes sets up the value (meeting Chani : 0x48 , meeting Liet : 0x58), whereas letting Gurney training Fremen for the first time increments it. So, if you let Gurney in a sietch for the first time and the value increments to the value of a major game event, the event triggers immediately.

  • if you let Gurney after you returned Harah home and before talking to Stilgar (about Chani), you won't receive the message from Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and the Duke won't leave the Palace. The meetings with Chani event triggers when you speak with Stilgar
  • if you let Gurney after you spoke with Stilgar about Chani and before you meet her, you trigger the meeting with Chani event (also blocks the message from Baron)
  • if you let Gurney just before meeting Liet, you trigger the meeting with Liet event
  • WARNING! If you let Gurney AFTER you met Liet, the game will consider Chani has been captured by the Harkonen. So when you drop her anywhere, she disappears from the game! and you can't finish
  • if you let Gurney after Chani has been kidnapped, the Fremen think she has already been rescued (I didn't check but that should cause their motivation to go up)
  • I didn't test, but I suspect that if you let Gurney after rescuing Chani, you trigger the end-game event. :D but that would be difficult to check

The unlimited game glitch This glitch allows to skip the endgame scene, and continue playing for ever. Ask Stilgar to launch the final battle against the Harkonnen Palace, then immediately call a sandworm and join the battle. Tell the fremen to launch a masive attack. When the battle is won, don't enter the palace. Wait for two days and the palace will turn into a sietch. When you enter this sietch the end scene doesn't occur, and you can chat with all the foes.
