People are free to play games however they want, but not everything needs to be a speedrun. It's effectively a mod to speed up the game / reduce lag because people wasn't happy with the original release. At the end of it, if it causes more problems than it's worth, get rid of it. People can still upload their vods to youtube and "speedrun" that way if they want to. But it's not an officially released way to play the game so it doesn't really need to be featured.
It's not just about respecting past decisions to not step on any toes for these submissions, this workload needs to work for moderators too, it is already a large series with alot of categories. Retire it completely and let it rot, but it's not sustainable to keep entertaining its existence, never was. You can NEVER ban official releases, but this one instance you absolutely actually can.
@nicj i am no saturn expert so I can't tell you the status for that software. https://discord.gg/z55Ezabz You can join SEGA crew discord to get some answers. But ya everything else shouldn't exist come speedrun accuraccy. Arcade is in a weird position for that too, but generally WolfMAME and fastest arcade version for most games is standard from what I've seen, I've used Mortal Kombat boards as a blueprint there, Tenka is very knowledgeable when it comes to Arcade. But generally ya PS1 is the only option on home console emulation here with some norm of accuracy via Duckstation. I asked around SOTN, RE1, MGS and FF7 mods when I did research there.
https://www.speedrun.com/gaia_seed_project_trap?h=PRACTICE&x=zdn730ek
I helped setup this board in the past before I left.
So if you're asking me for main Metal Slug 1 board, I would just allow emulation for PS1 and Arcade, if you wanna go Arcade route only: that's up to the community and mods I guess. But everything else should def be retired to legacy. I would have probably just left the legacy board open on auto-verify since nothing makes sense from that casual era anyway. But let's be clear, PPSSPP is not speedrun accurate from what I know, it's just the least shit and/or basically the only option to emulate PSP for. That means it's probably about as accurate as me running Doom on a potato, or VBA for GameBoy which runs like 500% faster than hardware.
At the end of the day, you're the boss though lol, im never modding a board again after I got death threats by runners via SRC. So I hope the board will turn out nicely, but im def not deciding on anything anymore lol.
Edit: Should also mention, for the titles with IGT: that should be more okay to include emulation in general IF IGT is main timer for said title.
@nicj if it were me, I'd only allow speedrun accurate emulation like PS1 (Duckstation) for console, of the systems currently part of the board. smartphones and all that is banned straight up, most of everything else just reitre to legacy. Arcade with strict rules would be fine. But if good (accurate) emulation doesnt exist for speedrunning (PSP,PS2, Saturn...), dont include it... it's emulation anyway, PC users can use an actual accurate emulator for submissions.
Alternatively you include every emulator but at the very least, you have to split console/emu to different categories from each other. But def not all emu from all systems mashed together against each other like right now. But if you're gonna include everything, you need rules for even that. Not just (whatever emu for saturn exists is allowed), no you have to actually do the research and make the best possible choice. When I setup Metal Slug 7, I didn't know the accurate option for DS emulation. I reached out to pokemon/mario community mods and learned.
Dave said he had experience moving large boards like that in the past, I never had to personally - try reaching out to him. Otherwise I guess you'd have to try asking staff about it, check with starsmiley
I really do hope to see the Metal Slug community prosper in the future, lord knows it needs better guidance. If people wanna put blame on me that's fine, I was here for 3months? Suki was here for at least 10y, I can't speak for Gen. But I will absolutely take any and all blame for faults I may have been part of during the very short time I was here. Fair is fair :)
Edit: Also before I left, I gave Dave mod seat for every game in my posession, so him leaving those unattended is 100% on him. But either way it's a better outcome than leaving them to you or suki, that is for sure.
In terms of me destryoying everything, Audit log will tell the truth there, I don't think I did any rule changes, so if anything is scuffed: that's before my time lol.
As for your dogwater comment, no you people gave away mod keys yes. What I was refering to was getting Site staff to remove you two entirely as to not interfere with future changes since you and I have blocked each other, and suki def did not care about emulation at all. That's where my wrestle statement comes into play. Ultimately staff agreed since you both proved super inactive on the site.
And in terms of why I left, you can only speculate since you and I again have no direct line of communication, the only person in the world that truly know why I left: is Dave himself. But let's be real here, you actually DO NOT KNOW anything, because we never talked.
So yes, apparently a TAS run slipped by on my watch and I had no idea, I take the blame there for sure - inexcuseable. But no I did not destroy these boards and no you don't know really anything since you weren't included in the talks Gen. Dave tried to get information off you for why categories existed and all that, but you were not part of any decsion making really. So stop the speculation and take the blame for the time your ruling was inadequate.
Ultimately you said it yourself, you established the boards essentially with casuals in mind - that is evident with everything I've seen. I'm of the mind that speedrun.com should be about speedrunning, and that creates opposition from your view of what you wanted. When all is said and done, it's now out of both our hands and it's up to the rest of the community to decide what they want for SRC.
The idea was to start over by shoving everything old into the category extension page as metal slug has always been a playground for casuals, it's not speedrunning - given that software never had rules and half the stuff is banned without being able to tell whom used what.
So it was all gonna be manually moved over and retired to a legacy styled setup like Resident Evil 1 did with outdated emulation software. SRC unfortunately doesn't allow you to just delete everything because that pisses some people off, but you cannot keep everything people did in the past and respect a new path whilst mixing the two.
When everything had been moved over and retired, we would have a blank slate and a new foundation to build a future on with emulation rules in place from day 1. That was the plan, there were several reasons why we never got that far. Dave was busy for one and I was tired after wrestling control from Gen and Suki for boards just to get control of everything. SRC site staff made it alot harder than it really should have been as well, it didn't help that Gen banned me from the discord server either after I pointed out how inactive the mods actually were.
And here we are... I am looking forward to see how you tackle this beast nicj, I wish you all the luck in the world to sort this mess out because Metal Slug is in a really bad position for speedrunning since nobody in the past cared about rules at all and probably alot of runs up shouldn't be allowed in the first place.
The question is, why has this not been resolved after 5 months? I just checked GB discord, neither of the current mods are part of it from what I noticed, I know me, ucci (whom is going for WR currently) and Beet for sure is part of it. Like there are tests for GB accuracy out there https://sprintinglegs.com/emutiming/results.html
VBA has been banned since before mankind roamed the earth.
For whatever reason, emu rules was never put in place: This falls upon the mods, you know better than me why nobody ever actually did, but let's not shy away from the truth: it still does fall on you to put that in place.
as for Floppy himself, he's been on SRC for at least 5y as an emu runner, https://www.speedrun.com/ngnes/runs/y6r8451y
Ninja Gaiden community have tried to warn you in the past to include emu software used in submissions, you never learned - I checked all your submission comments for all games, never once have you bothered to specify what software you're on, NES,GB/SNES or otherwise. As an emu runner, that is a red flag and you've had YEARS to learn about accepted software, specially since some of these games like Ninja Gaiden, for sure have rules in place for what software is allowed.
A Link to the Past mods even rejected one of your submissions judging by your rejection history, with part of their reasons being "Emulator name/version should be visible or shown at the end of the run".
So there's blame on both sides, but why isn't anything adressed after almost half a year?? Join the GB discord if you plan to mod GB games and you just don't know much about it https://discord.gg/Jp5FJhYu
if it does, I've not known about it for over 5 years haha
Could just make it Gradius/Salamander discord, Orgins Collection releases next month, might wanna do something with that :) ?
I just wanna close with, we're never gonna be best of friends. But I did unblock you @CzaR - I'm getting too old for this lol and I've already run this game. i did post a little something in the big20 channel too, im healing! I just genuinely wish the best towards the moderation team and to me nowadays it's just fun for a shmup to get some much needed love. We have more of those!! Gradius II cough.
Ya im sorry for all of this mess people. It sounds like there's no evidence against anyone, so I guess Charlies time should be a 31 whatever MTL counted it to, and MTL is wr holder. Oh im so relieved we got to the bottom of that
case closed bois. Sounds like nobody did anything wrong, problem solved! Glad we sorted that out lol
B-but... SRC says 21 days :'( I'm sorry, I guess I messed up by assuming SRC rules mattered :'( Don't hurt my feelings, im just human
sounds like every emulation submission before this rule is cheated. I'm sorry people, I should have known :(
Seriously Czar and Lynn, if ya'll want Gradius series mods after you deal with this headache, im happy to delegate since this guy likes these games so much. I AM HAPPY to give you more power there so I don't have to deal with this anymore lol. Just send me a message later and I'll add ya'll
also what are you even doing here dude, your account was made 24min ago and you're just joining in on this alone??
I stayed quiet for years until some other runners started notcing something was weird with his submission. The moment they noticed something iffy, he gets rid of the evidence and leaves. If he's innocent then why act this way?
@wddwef I never said I had evidence, go back and read https://www.speedrun.com/lifeforce/forums/xkqlf :)
If people can prove me cheating, let them! I'm not taking down my vods and deleting my src account like I got caught with my hands in the cookiejar.. You also seem to fail to understand the concept of STRICTER RULES FOR WORLD RECORD SUBMISSIONS. I trust this community to do right objectively for everyone. And if they find out I've been cheating, they are really good at their job, because that's news to even me LOL.
Sounds to me like your boi couldn't framecount properly though, so maybe leave it to the mods to sort things out :)
All I can say is, they killed me as mod here so they won. I'm not gonna say anything more about it because what's done is done :) Czar's at least been here with me back when I was still mod, for at least 5y and he continues to be here. So all history in terms of reviews and submissions and rule changes - he was always here when it happened.
So either I guess he was ok with it all or he just didn't check in enough to have an opinion. I'm actually not throwing him under the bus here despite him ultimately being my demise :P I'm just saying, this was not a sole dictatorship, there were other mods and they could have spoken up and had me gone ages ago if they truly saw mismanagement.
Anyone is welcoem to go through my videos, that's fine. I have never cheated, I will say that. I know FCEUX is outdated, Mesen didn't exist back then. I didn't wanna mix different emulators because shmups dont give much leeway in terms of timesaves when optimized, and having various emulators allowed with different lag emulation felt more messy - so I just stuck with the one for everyone.
Lastly, I took over from Toad - he modded me into this because at the time I had actively ran this, gradius nes and the GB installments. That being said, SRC themselves doesn't really provide a formal education on how to be a moderator, this is all volunteer work. By that I mean, they don't teach you the ins and out of any universal setup come emulation specific rules. how to detect discrepancies or any of that. If you have that knowhow and background coming in then YES, PLEASE TAKE MOD SEAT!!! SRC is extremely fragile in the sense that this is not an organization with employees, ANYONE can moderate. I did the best I could given I have zero background on a technical field. But that is SRC in a nutshell, if better more suited peopel step up, GREAT! I've never claimed to be an expert, i'm just a runner trying to keep it fair competition. So if people take issue with some of my choices then absolutely, I can take responsibility for that, as much as SRC understands they allow people like me to be put in these positions without knowledge/background check on how to handle cases like these.
As an emu runner myself, I know we get alot of extra eyes on us. Which is why I've never had 1 single run rejected myself because I make sure I read rules for every game I run. And it is alot and across many platforms.. I'm also an absolute pleb with speedruns so everyone can beat me without trying lol, but for people in the top like the former boi here... That gets stricter, spec on emu. Ultimately I kept him up there for YEARS, depsite feeling something was off with his submissions, but I didn't call him out: I waited for others to notice something I couldn't. Apparently people did..
We know why im gone, it's not because I was a super corrupt moderator, it's because I was against the big 20 score category - and whatever, done is done :P But I absolutely am too stupid to even start splicing vods, and def too stupid to know how to detect them. And let's be honest, alot of people here can confirm they don't find me all that smart: ya, fair?
That being said, I wish you all good. Really! Charlie you're so badass for beating a time I didn't even know was humanly possible at this point. I felt so bad for Neetsu whom is an amazing japanese runner across alot of shmup games. And they had their time beat by someone I suspected was a fraud for years. I'm happy to see Neetsu getting some of their records back <3.
Oh and, he changed name once and returned with submissions for src. Keep an eye out for any Chinese shmup runners coming out with amazing times fast. He'll pop up again prob in about 2-3y, that's how long it took last time.
