@Mspeedrun Were you able to find a WAD file? You can likely find one searching online, or you can join the OoT Speedrunning discord and post any questions there. Most people don't read the speedrun.com forums much anymore.

You do not have to use an original controller, that controller looks perfectly fine. If you click "Show rules" on any of the leaderboard pages and scroll down through the game rules, you'll find a section detailing our controller rules. Generally though as long as your controller isn't adding any crazy features like turbo or macros you're fine.

That's odd that you're not able to join the discord, did you try both the link from the Discord button and the link from the pinned forum post? Both seem to prompt me to join when I click them, and I can see they're both still active looking through our list of invites. If someone else could confirm one or both of them aren't working I can get them changed out, but perhaps it's on your end? Here's a brand new invite to try just in case: https://discord.gg/5fH7xpar

@MissRaven No worries! Yeah the part about 1.0/1.1 injects just means you can't inject those versions into VC because they were only ever officially released on N64. Obtaining vanilla VC (which is 1.2) through homebrew is perfectly fine.

Yeah Wii homebrew has been allowed for years and years, it's the only reasonable way to obtain VC at this point. We even link to softmodding resources in our discord server. Out of curiosity what from the rules gave you the impression it's not allowed? @MissRaven

The tower collapse sequence isn't typically considered a dungeon or mini-dungeon, so it might not fit very well with the other individual levels. Aside from that I'm not sure if there'd be much interest from other runners in having a category for it, but like anything if there were it could be considered.

If you're talking about the Defeat Ganon video you uploaded to your channel a few days ago, there's no leaderboard where that would be accepted currently. The actual Defeat Ganon category on the main board is a full game speedrun which does not allow the practice rom.

From the OoT discord: If Navi is available, she will appear on C-Up 30 seconds after loading into an area, except for certain areas like dungeons. She will stick around for 2 minutes, but after that she will expire. This happens even in areas where she doesn't appear on C-Up. Once she expires, she won't come back for almost 20 minutes. You can reset this timer by dying, or savewarping. If you're using the practice ROM, you can use the Call Navi feature in the File menu to make her appear on C-Up despite her timer.

The numbers may differ on PAL as most speedrunning knowledge is based around NTSC, but the mechanics should be the same.

@ReelLamp NMG? Are you looking for a no major glitches guide? This thread was talking about normal any% on the Switch, and we don't have any nmg categories. (Though some are pretty similar, like GSR)

Good eye! These are usually called pop-ups, and they do in fact save time in certain instances like you said. They're usually found at corners or edges of ledges, with your example being the corner where the two walls meet. While optimal in theory, often times it's quite precise to actually land on the floor above after getting the pop up, so these can be hard to save time with consistently in an RTA setting. However, you also have the option of jumpslashing after the pop up, which is easier and still saves some time over climbing, just a bit less. You'll see pop up + jumpslash very commonly done in the Dampe race with sword as an example.

We consider Ship of Harkinian a different game altogether since it features brand new code written by others and makes significant changes to the game. It's not really comparable with the official releases, so it's not allowed on our leaderboard.

With that said, Ship does have its own separate leaderboard on this site maintained by another group of people, so I'll link that here: https://www.speedrun.com/The_Legend_of_Zelda_Ocarina_of_Time__Ship_of_Harkinian

Hey - sorry for late reply as I missed this at first, but you should be good. You're allowed to change the input plugin on PJ64 so long as your other settings are default, and controller-wise you basically just need to avoid mapping control stick values to a button, which it looks like you're not doing. Remapping normal buttons is fine, and tweaking analog settings should be fine too so long as you still retain access to all normal movement. (deadzone > ess > walking > running.)

Worth mentioning we also allow Dolphin emulator emulating the WiiVC version (with specific required settings which can be found in the rules) which many people prefer since it's more accurate to Wii than PJ is to N64, so you could always give that a shot too if you don't end up liking PJ64. Lastly I'm not sure if you're in the OoT discord, but I highly recommend joining and asking questions there since not many people read these forums in comparison.

Hi there. So it's hard to give advice without seeing a video of how you attempt the trick, so if you have the ability to provide that it would help a lot. I'd suggest joining the OoT Speedrunning discord and posting in there if you do. Otherwise it might help to know that ending up in deku basement likely indicates the blue warp wasn't loaded for enough frames (ie you were too fast reaching the area past the hump) and kokiri emerald cutscene likely means it was loaded for too many frames (ie too slow reaching the area past the hump). After crossing the hump the blue warp becomes unloaded and stops counting up, so the trick is mainly about having consistent movement to that point after cancelling OI. I'd make sure you're throwing the first nut at a good time (about 1 step down should work) then holding target + right during the animation to make sure you sidewalk asap. Also make sure to let Link reach full speed before and after the 2nd nut throw.

If by "2nd edition" you mean N64 v1.1, then the most notable glitch patched is probably Blank A. You can read more about version differences here: https://www.zeldaspeedruns.com/oot/generalknowledge/version-differences

Typically for a new extension category to be added there needs to be interest from at least a few different runners, after which the category can go through a submission process for evaluation by mods and receive a minimum number of required runs to make the category permanent. (Usually between 1 and 10.) We have this system in place so the boards don't become cluttered with categories that see little to no competition. If you'd like to drum up interest for your category from other players, I suggest joining the OoT Speedrunning Discord and making a post in one of the extensions channels.

United StatesCountLG2 years ago

We don't typically add new categories at the request of only one person, and a run like this would likely go on the extensions leaderboard rather than the main leaderboard. If you'd like to discuss the possibility of adding a category to the extensions leaderboard, I'd suggest joining the OoT speedrunning discord and making a post about your category in one of the extensions channels to garner interest from other players. If there is substantial interest, we can begin the submission process to have it added to the board, which entails an evaluation by mods before adding it as a "pending" category on the leaderboard, and requiring a minimum number of submitted runs (usually between 1 and 10 depending on how meaningful the category is) from different players across a month-long period to make it permanent.

145 BPM.

The angle watches onscreen are a feature of the practice rom, aka gz, which can be used on emulator. If you're using Dolphin (which you should be for any%), you can patch gz onto the Wii Virtual Console version and open that with Dolphin. Here's a link to the practice rom website: https://www.practicerom.com/

If you need help with anything else I'd recommend asking in the OoT speedrunning discord, as we have many more people active in there who are able to answer questions.

United StatesCountLG2 years ago

I'd recommend checking the rules again, we allow Dolphin alongside PJ64 1.6/1.7. It doesn't matter whether you run on a Mac or not, the word "macros" refers to controller inputs like to create a tas, maybe that's where the confusion came from? But yeah 1.6 isn't recommended to be used, Dolphin is generally the way to go as long as you've got it configured properly. (The emulation rules go over that)

United StatesCountLG2 years ago

GameCube is already an option on the leaderboard that you can submit runs to, we allow all official releases of vanilla Ocarina of Time which includes the GameCube versions. Wii running the GameCube version is still considered GameCube because the two systems are essentially equivalent.

The Virtual Console version of the game, released on the Wii Shop Channel (now discontinued, but still obtainable through homebrew)

United StatesCountLG2 years ago

The Brawl demo is not considered an official release of the game. It's a demo with a 5 minute time limit, so you won't get far using that aside from the extension categories we have specifically dedicated to it. If you have the ability to run the Brawl version though, you should also be able to use WiiVC if you're on a Wii or Dolphin emulator, which is much more widely applicable and commonly used for most categories.
