I suggest we retime the old floppy runs to match the loading time on WHD and merge the boards.
- Nothing besides the loading time is different between the two versions.
- Loading time varies even between the floppy runs. The WR run is running on either a faster Amiga or an accelerated floppy drive since the loading times are faster than 2nd and 3rd place runs. There are no rules about the Amiga configuration either so the loading times can vary greatly. (For science I used an A1200 config with a turbo floppy drive and got a time of 7:07 even though without loads the run was about 13 seconds worse than my 7:55 with the default A500 config.)
- It would be better to have all runs on the same board for the run history tracking, route development etc.
- There's really no reason for the new players to run the floppy board so those older floppy runs would just be forgotten if they're on a separate board which is a big shame since they paved the way for the new runs.
Agreed, except it shouldn't be necessary to retime old runs, unless for serious contender runs. Might be a good idea to define agreeable emu setting on most Amiga board rules. This would be regarding to clear difference on loading times for example, even when running a WHDLoad installed version, when using a different CPU / memory setup within the emu. Loading times might then be better estimated or standardized in the future.
Could also start doing Loading Time Removed but as the WHD load times are pretty much non-existent I see no need for that personally.
Hello.
I have had a pretty hellish last two weeks with my job (enterprise linux support) and I've been out of it all last weekend so I'm just now getting to this.
I am not against retiming the runs to compare against WHDLoad runs. We can probably even add a column to indicate which version.
I did want to touch on two of the points in the OP:
- I had actually originally looked into configurations, but this was originally coming from the mindset of someone who was mainly doing these games on emulation specifically (and really only just starting out with it). After I acquired physical machines a few years back, I had tried to come back to this to figure out the physical hardware aspect to this as well. While emulation might be a bit easier to wrangle (and we can definitely figure that out), it is getting a bit harder to be able to setup a standardized setup on real machines. Take me for example, I had to get a TerribleFire 1260 for playing AB3D II on my A1200, and I was only really able to do that since i lucked out on a full 68060 on ebay for a cheap price (most people would probably only be able to get a 68030/68040 card). You can also technically play that game using a Vampire board on a A600. I do have a 8mb RAM card for the 1200 but it tends to act weird with certain games (chaos engine, prawo krwi). WHDLoad is impossible without additional RAM so you are forced to pay the "Amiga Tax" should you decide to go at these on real hardware. While official physical products in a way, the A500 Mini and The A1200 are still emulation. It's very odd. I would say we can work on standardization stuff in the discord.
There is some things that I do feel should be common sense to not do, like Turbo floppy (though I know there are ways to speed up physical floppy drives on the Amiga, there is also a physical limit to this. I do not personally use those).
- I can assure you there will still be people that insist on running the floppy version due to their thoughts on WHDLoad and for "purity" reasons, whatever that means.
Yeah, there are definitely games that run on different speeds depending on the configuration or the machine you're running it on. However, this game doesn't seem to be one of them. Only thing affected is the loading time. The WHD version with emulation is the most approachable method to play the game and it has the least amount of loading time so I think it makes sense we use that as a base and then just remove any extra loading times from the other runs. That way we get a unified board with all the history and we can easily compare the times and routes etc.
