welcome to the simple questions thread! the point of this thread is to post your questions and in theory get a simple response answering it. questions can be about a wide variety of dan the man related topics, including:
- questions relating to the route
- questions about specific tricks used in runs
- questions about this webpage (speedrun.com/dantheman)
- more general questions about the rest of the game
if it's related to the game at all you can ask it! the only exception is that questions about the story are strongly discouraged, if you really want to talk about the lore you can go to the official discord community for dan the man. if you would prefer to ask your questions in a chatroom rather than a forum thread you can always join the (much cooler) speedrun discord community, which has its fair share of skilled players capable of answering your questions.
this thread is specifically for simple questions ("why did you pick up the shuriken in 8-4-2;1?" "what's the best method of getting tokens quickly?"), for topics that would need more nuance to answer properly ("what's the best costume?" "should weapon carrying be disallowed?") please make your own thread!
happy posting everyone!
Not sure if this fits, but why do weapons sometimes go through enemies? I have footage of guns not hitting enemies right in front of them, and it sometimes messes me up in fights.
when you use a weapon, the projectile is put in one of three locations depending on what type of weapon it is (thrown, gun, explosive) so that it looks more natural with the throwing/shooting animation:

as a result the actual projectile part of the weapon spawns in a short distance away from you. guns are the worst offenders, since the distance between the back of the bullet and the front of your body is the largest out of all the weapon categories. in practice, this means that when using guns to hit enemies your player character and the enemy need to not be visually overlapping in order to actually hit.
it's easiest for me if you upload onto those because the tool I use to time the runs properly only works on youtube at the moment (google drive is about the same). you can upload things to different websites but it is a lot more effort for me since I have to download it and then look at it in a video editor on my computer. tl;dr it's because I am very selfish
I have seen this a lot before and while I'm not 100% sure on how it works, my working theory is the following: elevators have ground and a moving platform at exactly the same height so if you frame perfectly land or punch or whatever at the edge of the elevator shaft you will be on the ground rather than the vertical moving platform, so the elevator would just leave without you. this is definitely a different glitch to elevator escape though so I can with absolute certainty tell you that this will not allow you to skip 8-4-2;3 fight, sorry
the only two versions you should be considering are whatever the latest update is (because it's convenient to be up to date) or 1.1.5 (it is the only version of the game where you have weapon and health carrying as a feature and the expanded costume inventory, plus if you're willing to go for a frame perfect trick 30 minutes into the run you can also do elevator escape allowing you to skip 8-4-2;3 fight). if you play on old versions you have to keep your internet off though otherwise you'll get sent back to the main menu and a popup that you can't get rid of will stop you from playing unless you update, as a result if you want to use statues in a run on an old version you are required to have premium on that save file
Is it allowed to use infinite money to gain an advantage over others? Well, as long as it doesn't change the gameplay, okay? Just infinite money, nothing else.
Dude whoever uses inf coins are cheaters. (Because you can get the best weapons, best outfit, etc) While US gets to grind tbh.
Most of my runs use infinite coins, sure go ahead and use them as long as it changes nothing else
the only thing that any publicly available hacks do is give you infinite coins (well, technically only about 1.1 million), a bunch of (mostly not very good) costumes and premium for free. coins are very easy to come by, usually you end any given speedrun attempt with more coins than you started with, but if you really needed to grind for coins the best method gives something like 500-600 coins per minute of real time depending on your loads (without premium, with premium it's around 600-700/min). as for premium, I have already explained in this news post (and again in this one) that the load removed timing method (LRT) that we use for the leaderboards is designed so that there is no difference between playing with premium and playing without it. for these reasons, the infinite coin mod is allowed.
In October 2023, Dan the Man Classic was added to the (at the time limited) Halfbrick+ games library, offering the definitive Dan the Man experience complete with automatic premium and making all other in-app purchases obtainable by other means. Fright Zone is finally available with regular progress
