Inventory buffer tech
Updated 1 year ago by T0TEM

Some considerations: If you're just getting started with running Curse, this tech isn't really the most important thing in the run — I would suggest learning this only when you're already familiar with the Mega-Monkey route, and if you feel your PB is stagnating a bit.

How does it work?

Normally, you're not able to walk AND have your inventory open at the same time. However, there is a 0.5s~ window after you click on a hotspot (object or character) in which pressing TAB or I to open your inventory won't stop you from walking. To exploit this, you can left click on a hotspot and immediately after press TAB or I. This way, you can walk while your inventory is open, which is what we call inventory buffering. To be able to combine items while walking, interact once (E/T/U) with any item in your inventory after you've started moving.

Video demonstration: This video only covers some of the uses for this tech in Parts 1 and 2, but it's a good display of what it can actually do. Keep in mind this video was made very soon after the discovery of the tech, so some new uses have been found since, and some details of the route have changed.

Uses for the tech

Parts 1 and 2 (Plunder Island): These are numbered following the order shown in the video above. The uses that aren't shown are labeled as Not Shown [NS], but you should still be applying them during the run, and you can see how they work in more recent top runs.

[#1] - Click on RAMROD and immediately press inventory key (these two inputs = "buffer to"), get HOOK from inventory — usually you'll want to use the item you're getting from your inv with the object you clicked on first, I'll clarify if else

[#2] - Buffer to CANNON, get CUTLASS from inventory, use CUTLASS with CANNON RESTRAINT ROPE (this is faster than buffering directly to the rope)

[#3] - Buffer to LADDER, get RING from inventory, use RING with PORTHOLE (this is faster than buffering directly to the porthole)

[NS] - Buffer to GUMBALL MACHINE, get BAG OF NICKELS from inventory

[#4] - Buffer to MAGIC HAT, get MAGIC WAND from inventory

[#5] - Buffer to UNDERGROWTH, get SCISSORS from inventory

[NS] - After escaping the quicksand: buffer to WATERFALL, flip inventory one page to the left, examine BOOK (this saves time at Blondebeard's and later in the ship's kitchen)

[NS] - After biting the biscuit: buffer to GROSS CHICKEN, get MAGGOTS from inventory

[#6] - Buffer to GOLD TOOTH, get CHEWED GUM from inventory (it's faster if you do this after picking up the pie pan and the biscuit cutter)

[NS] - Buffer to MUD PUDDLE, get PIE PAN from inventory

[#7] - Buffer to SAWHORSE, get BREAD KNIFE from inventory

[#8] - Buffer to RUBBER TREE, get BISCUIT CUTTER from inventory (this is no longer in use, due to a slight route change you can see in more recent runs)

[#9] - Buffer to TRAIL OF RUM, get EMBER from inventory

[#10] - Buffer to VAN HELGEN, get GLOVE from inventory

[#11] - Buffer to LOG PILE, get PISTOL from inventory, use PISTOL with DUELING BANJO (waiting until you're between the chalk numbers 10 and 5 saves time since the screen doesn't need to scroll, but you risk Van Helgen putting the banjo behind his head)

[#12] - Buffer to WATERFALL, open inventory and interact (E/T/U) with PASTE, combine PASTE with SKELETON ARM, combine PASTE with RUBBER PLUG, get STICKY RUBBER PLUG from inventory, use STICKY RUBBER PLUG with BOAT

[#13] - Buffer to CABAÑA BOY, get CLUB CARD from inventory

[#14] - Buffer to ICE BUCKET, get DRY TOWELS from inventory

[NS] - Buffer to SUNBATHER, get WET TOWELS from inventory, press ESC once to skip cutscene, use WET TOWELS with HOT SAND (see this showcased here: https://t.ly/XKl2g)

[#15] - Buffer to CANNONBALLS, get CHICKEN GREASE from inventory
