Emulators are too overpowered

Are you sure that emulators don’t give an unfair advantage as they allow you to create combinations that would otherwise be way harder and also because using a mouse is way easier than investing a pen on a small screen

I am thinking this should be reconsidered

i mean more than half of the people that are speedrunning the game use emulators so if you take that away there'll be like 7 or 8 people left :/

I mean as someone who uses an emulator for this, I agree, they are quite overpowered, especially with Burn a Pie, seeing how you can jitterclick better with a mouse than with a pen.

As one of the few console runners, running primarily Burn a Pie%, I find that other than the apple peeling step, every other step is dramatically easier on emulator due to click speed.

I was halfway through a Any% run and trust me they were not overpowered, at least for some sections of the game, like when you have to use the mouse in a horizontal line. Now with cutting stuff, they are definitely overpowered.

@StraightFaceChase but if you think about it, that could increase the motive for separation of console and emulator. If some things are way easier on console, and some things are way easier on emulator, I think that it makes the separation of the two a very good change; of course, that's just my opinion.

Maybe one of the mods should make a emulation category and a console category, like SM64. When I speedrun SM64 16 Star I use emulation for runs and practicing and I already have the cartridge of the game to practice on sometimes, or I use USAMUNE.

they could do a category for emu and consoles, but when playing the game on a phone its basicily a DS but on your phone. So people could use phones for those who dont have/cant affort a pc, and then if they made a separate category everyone would switch to phones and those with pc would have a HUGE disadvantige.

Its better to do it now than never.

Agree with @StraightFaceChase, the longer we take to split the boards, the more records will have to be moved and therefore the more work will have to be done.

today i ordered a copy of CM2, so when it gets here, i will do some experiments and see what advantages and disadvantages we can rule out for emu vs ds.

I honestly think that the leaderboard's categories should be separate for DS and Emulator runs.

@BramBell i have a copy of CM2. Just tell me what you want to figure out and i can help you with it.

United States

@Cmaster25 i just wanted to see what advantages and disadvantages we could take apart, like click speed and accuracy. Another idea I have is that emulators may or may not be more accurate with mics than an actual DS would. I don't know how to set up a mic with my emulator, though, so we would need someone else's help with that.

@Cmaster25 thanks, I will still order the copy though, but just because i want to start doing full game runs :) when it gets here, i will report what i find so we can have 2 sides of research, because seeing how you are from Germany, I would believe that you would use a PAL version of CM2, while my copy will be an NTSC-U. this would bring a 30 frame difference if that is true, plus the 3DS may bring different results from the regular DS as well. that way, we can fully break down every thing we may need to help decide if we should separate the emu and ds as different leaderboards.

I don't think Emulator and Console should be split because certain categories call for different optimal playing enviroments. For example, you would want to play a shorter category like 5 Recipes or 10 Recipes on Emu because the route requires more jittering and more endurance. However, most other categories require precision, like All Gold to beat them. Not only that, but the DS is much easier to hold during a long play session. And about the Jittering in BAP%, its not really that bad if you know what youre doing and have played a lot of DS or 3DS games.

Splitting would also be pretty bad for the leaderboard itself. There simply arent enough console runners for new people in the community to want to play on console because it would be less competitive.

The console hardware is much better suited for speedrunning because remember, THE GAME WAS DESIGNED FOR IT. Please don't split the categories yet. Later down the line, when there are more people playing on console, I will be all for it. But not now.

@BramBell i actually got my copy from england since i go there almost every summer holidays so i think mine is NTSC but i dont see anyway to look if it is an NTSC or PAL version.

United States

@Cmaster25 the way it works Is that copies from Europe are normally PAL, copies from America are normally NTSC-U, and copies from Japan are normally NTSC-J. Some versions have big differences, like for example, the NTSC-J of Super Punch Out has a faster Dizzy on Rick Bruiser than the NTSC-U version.

@Cmaster25 any european copy is PAL
