World of Goo Forum  /  Suggestion - Seperate mobile runs (Android/iOS/Switch) from PC runs
  iLBiLB

Recently I started to play the Android version of World of Goo and noticed that it is very, VERY different to the editions for PCs. Note that the worst Chapter 1 run done on PC is 14:53, while the Android run is at 21:41.

I suggest that we split the categories somehow. This has worked before with the game Gravitykour (https://www.speedrun.com/roblox_gravitykour) and it could totally work here.

Thoughts?

In my defense, the 21:41 was the first time playing World of Goo in a long time, and I just got a 15:25 after running it again.

I know some leaderboards have sub-categories for different input methods like mouse/touchscreen (I've even suggested doing this for Getting Over It, without success). Would this mean the Wii version should also get its own sub-category (I haven't played this version, but I have an idea how it works)? What about the Switch version, which also has a touchscreen but you can also use the joy-cons like Wii remotes?

So, separating runs to use touchscreen versus ones that don't? Sounds like a good idea.

Instead of creating different categories, something like in MG:TT could be done (https://www.speedrun.com/mgtt). Other games, like PvZ, have different platforms listed as different games (https://www.speedrun.com/pvzs)

That being said, I don't think having subcategories for different versions is a good idea. It would make the board look cluttered and create a bunch of categories without any runners. Just saying what platform the game is being played on in the submission is good enough imo

The mobile version has its pros and cons when compared to PC. I've found it's a lot easier to throw and whack the gooballs on mobile. For example, I found it was a lot easier to get OCD on mobile on "Hang Low". This is especially helpful if you need to throw a gooball through a wall, like in "Upper Shaft". It could be that I'm just not very good at whacking or that this was nerfed in the latest PC version. However, it is a lot harder to select the right gooballs and use the whistle on mobile, since the mouse is much more precise.

So, all of us are well aware that the touchscreen versions of the game differ from the ones without available touchscreens, and there needs to be differentiation between the two.

I support the proposal that the touchscreen versions become a sub-game of this one. It's not optimal, but I prefer it much better as opposed to fluffing up all the categories.

I agree we don't want to clutter the leaderboard with mostly unused sub-categories. I'm not sure if we really could get a game request for "World of Goo (Mobile)". According to the Game Request Rules:

Quote

Games existing on multiple consoles may or may not have multiple boards. In general, if the versions and ports of a game are comparable by some metric, they are generally contained in the same board. If they are not very comparable due to significant differences, then the game may be given multiple boards, grouping comparable versions and ports appropriately.

I'd say the versions are comparable, since like I've said before, they both have their pros and cons.

An alternative solution we to is turn off the "Platforms obsolete each other" option, which "Determines whether runs by the same player(s) on different platforms should be shown or only the fastest." This way if somebody chooses to run both PC and Mobile/Console, both times will show up on the leaderboards. If we get enough runs on Mobile/Console, then we could make appropriate sub-categories.
