In this stream, the game ran at a much higher speed than usual.

He didn't have this issue in earlier streams. It may have something to do with his monitor's refresh rate, and vsync being disabled by external programs. See this thread on the Steam forums:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/201420/discussions/0/846958724736278143/

The bug may have been fixed by now. But Marstead is using the DRM-free version from the Humble Store (tokitori2_windows_1389720725.zip). This is an older version, which doesn't have the ancient frog hint text popups.

I'm reminded of Far Cry 2 speedruns, which also exploits a bug that makes the game run much faster. (Not that I'm interested in such a category.)

Hi @hfcwesker, I read the posts but I don't play the game anymore. I still have to watch your 99% runs from a few months ago.

The idea was to lengthen the any% run in a way that doesn't feel too fake/arbitrary. :p

In Detour, you don't have access to some of the molehills (the ones that are unlocked by visiting the Crystal). That means you get to do more puzzles. Also, on PC, you can only teleport from checkpoints, so you have to do extra work to get out of the Lava Frog area. On Switch, this is not an issue.

As for Intended: it's the way most casual players experience the game, so it's another not-completely-fake way to make the game longer, without going for 100% completion.

Weird. It seems like the bird picked you up at the same frame you landed the stomp, so you had control while being carried. Then pressing up to go into the ladder climbing animation. Or something.

Yeah such YOLO strats are more for when you're far behind and want to reset anyway, or when the run becomes completely optimized.

hcfwesker figured out why the portal sometimes doesn't work. It has nothing to do with the slug. It happens when you touch the portal and the bubble at the same time. The game thinks you went through the portal. Apparently, it always disables the exit portal temporarily, to prevent you from going back in again right after teleporting. Presumably, the exit portal is then re-enabled once you pass a certain point below it. But since you never went through, it remains disabled and you pass through. I have been unable to reproduce the glitch on PC! I bet it has to do with how bubbles have been changed on Switch again... The glitch can be avoided by just standing on the ledge instead of jumping in. The bubble catches you anyway.

Also, here's a dumb RNG/timing strat in the preceding part: let the electric slug walk on the block, but don't transport it to the left, just put a one tile gap. The lizard can cross the cap and squash the slug, but only some of the time. It depends on the other slugs' positions. https://i.imgur.com/r9OQDds.jpg

Here's a small thing I noticed: normally, when you enter a new door and it shows the map, feathers slowly appear on the map, as Toki Tori walks to the next area. But if you do the glitch, the feathers are already there. It makes sense, because the game thinks you entered an already-unlocked door.

Here's a useless strat (unless you can improve it significantly).

Interesting! They moved the second bat from the right, one tile to the right on Switch! So your strat doesn't work on PC.

BUT, because of you, I found out that it still works on PC if I stomp after chirping. The honker bug is then prevented from honking (and jumps to the right as well).

Important mechanic: his honk seems to be delayed a little bit if you chirp more than once. I had noticed this in the grass watering section, but it was inconsequential there.

  • There is an extra obelisk toward the lava area (before the puddle with the 5 electric slugs).
  • Birds are no longer stunned when you stomp near them.
  • Bubbles prioritize Toki Tori.
  • The tiny frog platform is smaller and there is no hole and horizontal ladder (not sure if this actually matters for time).

(There are also lots of small changes that don't matter for any%.)

Using the lava frog's pipe is already ~12s for the bird. Then using the eagle song from the obelisk instead of the checkpoint to the far left is another ~10s walking time saved. Then because of the route change, a later bird lure is faster. And the caged firefly is also pretty big, because on PC you have to drop the light bug so the frog eats it, make him burp, reposition the firebug, etc. all before you can start walking left. The Switch advantage is definitely more than 20s total.

I haven't gotten it with keyboard yet, only xbox360 controller on PC. I'll test some more... so far no luck on keyboard.

I've just confirmed that the trick works on PC. On the door in the area to the left of the beginning (which we normally don't use). I held analog up and tapped dpad down.

I haven't been able to do it while standing still (yet).

Some thoughts:

It seems that the "enter door"-action triggers twice in quick succession. First it marks the door as unlocked and plays the fanfare, which is then immediately interrupted by the second "enter door"-action, which causes the volume to fade down to zero. So the game probably failed to take control away from the player in time, letting you enter twice.

Something to note: you enter a bit to the right of the center. Maybe this is important.

Another thing to note: after entering a door, you usually want to mash a button (A on xbox, I assume it's B on Switch) to skip the map screen as soon as possible. The audio from the mic suggests that you start your mashing at the same time as the first "up"-input.

Great find! Bubbles should prioritize Toki Tori in the Switch version, although this change seems to be implemented in a weird way:

Haha, I have made the exact same mistake earlier in this thread (if you can find it). I've timed the molehill strat you mentioned, but it ends up being slower. Instead of using the molehill you can also use the level reset feature. I haven't timed that either, but I'm pretty sure it's slower as well. Exactly because the map can be divided into a left side and a right side, and there are three "bridges", but two of them are one-way only. So there is no way around having to do the long tutorial section...

...unless you have the golden wings. Which caused me to think of a "NG+" meme category, where you start with the wings and only have to get the 5 frogs.

Good to know, that 7 sec timesave. There are still some riskier/luck-based strats towards the lava section, in the area with the electric slugs and lizard, and 2frogs1block can be sped up by timing the berry stomp instead of force-feeding him, but that's also risky and dependent on frog RNG.

From "the last fully black frame after resetting" to "the first fully black frame after the ending cutscene"?

Hi, welcome back to this game!

Have you confirmed that it is actually necessary to drop down after going through one of the frogpipes? I assumed that being in the crystal area is enough to activate the molehills AND that the birdsong works from the pipe platforms. (I don't plan on buying a Switch to test this.)

The problem with the lava frog is that you need to stomp twice to move the green bamboo poles if you want to climb that ladder. But then the frog croaks twice, and you'll actually have to wait for him before dropping into the pipe. So yeah, either way it's faster to use the eagle (or to do lava last).

A thing that requires testing: I think that the game registers each ancient frog to be teleported as soon as the door opening animation starts. So there is room for optimizing the eagle pickup timing. (In testing, you can use the pause menu to check the frog status.)

Cool strat with the falling frogs. Doesn't work on PC, unfortunately.

On keyboard I can't wake up the crab while falling. When I use a controller, it does work.

I have this other strat. Pull the big block to the right and aggro the lizard. When he crashes, the thin block will move two tiles left. Then stand on the thin block and make him push it off. Reposition the blocks, and aggro him again. He will only mow the leftmost part of the grass, so the frog is safe. Then just wait for him to pass the frog and make him mow the right part of the grass. https://i.imgur.com/97q8WBG.jpg https://i.imgur.com/A4rK61p.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GHyUKnm.jpg https://i.imgur.com/A1rmy5P.jpg

Sounds like a nice setup with the frogs, cool if it is consistent. (You know, when a frog eats a berry, its position seems to get "rounded" to the nearest tile. Let's hope one tile more or less doesn't ruin it.)

Route looks solid!

(lol I just typed an elaborate plan involving going right from [3] instead of left from [2], but I just realized there is a wall so it's one-way only :p The only way to get from the left side of the map to the right side is the starting path. Otherwise any% would be a lot faster.)

Good changes imo. I don't need mod status for now, but I wouldn't mind of course. I'll watch all your runs either way.

I'm halfway through your 99% (U)WR, and I already have a few ideas.

In the "frog tunnel" in the West, you lure the frogs to the right and make the berry ride the ceiling. I just put all the frogs left and keep stomping the berry to the right (and making the frogs croak).

In the (short) ice cave, keep stomping on the crab while he's moving. The honker bug will keep jumping forward and the crab will keep following, instead of going back to sleep.

When you whistle but a bird doesn't see you (or you're in a nest), he lingers for a while. However, if he chases you but then loses line of sight, he IMMEDIATELY returns to his default spot. This is what happened at the "grass growing tutorial" (left of pink blossom). To buy time, wait till he drops you in his nest, then whistle once. Don't lure him too far to the right. Once he sees & loses you, he's back guarding the field.

Here's the invisible frog collectibles strat I mentioned earlier: Can be made faster and safer. (I took an unnecessary risk with that 2nd bubble; should have turned him around.)

we want molehill for the endgame with the frog portals to skip the need for a bug (unless that activates on it's own) Each pair of molehills unlocks when you reach the "furthest one" of each pair, EXCEPT those molehills on the main/obvious path from the start of the game to the crystal. So if you only use the one near the bubble portals and those in the pink blossom area, you don't need to visit the crystal at all!

thread: Toki Tori 2+

I think there's always one bug stuck to the crate, but he drops down when you stomp. (When they drop the are always right side up.) But he doesn't have a chance to fall to the ground because the crab is pushing him sideways. The only difference is if he happens to be on top when you stomp. Otherwise he'll just get crushed.

Yes, there is a separate noise when you collect the very last token in the game. Here (@6:55):

The statues take different amounts of tokens. I think each takes a fixed number. The southern one takes very few; I think this is intentional, so that it will always activate when players encounter it in their casual playthrough. There are tokens to the left of the northern statue, which you can only get by dropping down from the rock. This means it's probably best not to do that one last, because it would mean you'd have to get up there twice. There is a warp point next to the western statue, so if we activate that early, we can easily fly back there to deposit the last tokens.

There is also the question of whether you even want to visit the crystal in 99%. It activates the molehills on the "main route" from the start of the game to the crystal. (Kind of the "tutorial part" of the game.) I think the reason for this is that the developers didn't want to confuse new players, so they postponed opening them until the player reaches the crystal.

After getting the wings, the only way to get to the statue of Tokity is by going through the cave again, which is very slow if you can't use the cave's molehill.

I'm not sure if Tokity is a good idea now. After all, it's just as arbitrary a goal as collecting the tokens without depositing them.
