Happy to announce the addition of SEGARALLY as a new moderator for the boards.

I'm guilty of not playing or logging in much these days, so having a 2nd mod should help with the speed of approvals.

Also, since I only play on real hardware, I don't have the knowledge to deal with emulator submissions, but he does, so that should be something added in the future and hopefully we'll get more submissions.

I've only played with it briefly. I think the 3d controller is overly sensitive as well, but it's much easier to compensate or adjust with because it's smaller than the wheel.

Sorry, no. I'm not familiar with the PC version so it's Saturn only.

Hyogo, Japanthe_androgyne3 years ago

I don't play on emu to know if there's any differences, but just prefer to keep it Saturn only so there's no doubt that the playing field is level.

Keeping track of this so people can more easily target which levels they can try and untie. You can click the course difficulty/# of laps to go to the leaderboards. Hit me up on the Discord if something gets out of date.

I agree with what you're saying as well, I think there's just as much validity to a WR restricted to specific cars. But it just looks so messy with all the cars at the moment. A single board with filter for car will still let someone see they hold the WR for a specific car, it's just not immediately apparent (you'd have to filter).

It'd also show more runs on a single board, which i think makes it more encouraging for people to submit. As it is, the runs are scattered all over the place and there's not much competition going on in any of them. Or if there is, it's hard to see - i can't say i've bothered to look down thru every car category.

The other thing is, you're only tracking 3 laps but i'd be interested in fastest 1 laps as well. In a 3 lap/1 lap category setup, having the car as a filter would keep things a lot cleaner.

I'd be willing to help reorganize and restore the runs afterwards if you like.

Side note... I wonder how Turbo can be added to the ILs. IIRC it has true T.T. (without CPU car) ... so it shouldn't be added alongside/compared with RR1 T.T. mode. Perhaps separate ILs for T.T. Turbo tracks would suffice?

Appreciate this being added :) Now just need to unlock some faster cars!

Hey there :) I submitted a Strongwater Keep time yesterday and wouldn't mind submitting a few more times, but I think the board is a bit lacking at the moment.

The tracks should be set up as individual levels, PAL/NTSC should be separate (they're not really comparable at all in my testing) and things like Weather Setting and Rider could be added as variables to more closely mimic the actual game's record keeping. And, fastest laps are a must!

Im a mod over on the Wave Race 64 boards, which are setup pretty good and are worth checking out as it's pretty similar. We have a discord if you want to discuss any of this more easily. A few of our members have expressed some interest in doing BS time trials if it was more competitive!

I'd be happy to take on some moderator duties to help improve these boards if it's too much hassle to change things yourself, so please let me know!

We've decided to ban emulators from now on. Previously we were under the impression that default emulation was comparable to the real cartridge, ie you had to go to some length to get a faster framerate etc.

But we received a submission the other day that destroyed a PAL record, so I did some testing. Within a few attempts i'd beaten the PAL submission (with a few crashes as well)... using a default SNES9x setup. And then I beat it on NTSC too, which is just impossible on a real cart.

Sorry to emulation fans but the game is pretty cheap to pick up so we hope you'll continue on real hardware!

Can this be enabled please since the in-game timer has it?

We don't require proof of your times, but we may request it if we think it's necessary.

Video proof is encouraged because it's a great way for everyone to get better at the game. As long as we can see the full race and completion time clearly, any way you can record your screen is fine.

Photo proof should be of the record screen, ideally showing which vehicle you used, along with your speedrun.com username included in the photo.

If you can't find where the obstacle courses are, they're in Full-game Leaderboard.

Unfortunately we have to put it here instead of in Level Leaderboard, so that the times get ranked in ascending order, like in the game.

Current Role in Community: I only just joined the Discord a few weeks back, but I really like interacting there. It's great to have other people to talk to who still enjoy playing WR64. It's been my favourite racing game for a long time - i've been playing on and off since the game came out, but only in the last few years started making some of my records on the NTSC version. I hope by beating some records, it encourages those beaten people to beat me back!

Reasons Why You Want A Moderation Role: I'd like to see even more active players, and raise the awareness of the game itself, hopefully enough to get noticed by Nintendo so they might throw us a sequel-bone! I'd also like to discuss the leaderboard structure, ideas like a shortcut-less board for purists (and for casual players who'd have a hard time doing some of them), and possibly records for the easier and harder wave settings that the game doesn't record itself.

A bit of Port Blue from me too: https://i.imgur.com/OhKBCWH.jpg Puts me in the top 10 once verified! This is my first serious go with Miles Jeter as well. I've tried many times before but being so used to Mariner, i could never get the hang of it. But i watched Shibby's 1:18 guide tonight and was motivated to give it a crack with his settings. Slightly modified them after a while to get this record. Just not consistent enough to get into 1:18 ... yet!

At least i beat my old record with Mariner a few times. I also swear i put my initials for 2nd place in my photo! I reset the console after a run cause the Dolphin/ghost distracts me. Maybe that's why the initials didn't save.

During the runs i also managed a 27"4ish on the first lap, so not too far behind Shibby's WR. But his 2nd and 3rd laps are insane! At least i know where i'm losing the time... inconsistent on the last boat corner and the first wave throwing me around too much. Need to get fast enough that i can sneak past it on the 3rd lap!

That all sounds great, and take your time :) I agree NTSC speed is way cooler and a better showcase of skill too.

I can't say for sure but i'd guess most CRTs from 90's and later would support PAL, as that's about the time our PAL TV's started supporting NTSC i think.

For the console itself you'll probably need a machine yeah... i think you'll only need the machine itself, cause you can use your US power cable with it (i use AU power cables with a JPN console). Double check voltages first though :) Might make finding one a bit cheaper and easier if you can.

Just saw your latest on Sunny Beach, damn man! I need to watch you on Twitch to see if you show your machine settings, cause i think the only chance i have of coming close is to use the same settings... but even then it seems very unlikely! Do you use different settings for each course?

Yeah, all of Mahrla's 3 lap times are faster than mine, but i'm closer to him than i am to the top on NTSC. I'm faster than him on a few single laps actually, Port Blue (again with Mariner) - 30"642 vs 30"698, and Southern Island 28"138 vs 28"239.

I don't think my PAL records would equate to much, but i'd like to see how they compare to myself on NTSC now, by using the conversion factor... do you know the calculation? Just because in 1997, i spent way more time fine tuning records than i do now!

Just found this... i'm on Southern Island currently in 6th place (someone must have taken it from the old google doc, thanks :). That's my only submitted time cause i previously played PAL and had only just gotten an NTSC copy. No chance for a PAL leaderboards?

Anyway I'll try set some NTSC bests, though i was struggling to match Illu last time i tried... being so used to PAL speeds! And now i see all his records are beaten by you!

Out of interest have you tried Port Blue TT with Mariner much? I can't use Jeter to save my life so i've just always used Mariner even for that course, and was getting closer and closer to Illu's time a while back... It's hard though; if memory serves, he can go faster to the point that the 3rd lap waves become too difficult to get any decent time on.
