No we will not be adding a Chaos Difficulty (or any other difficulty modifiers) to NG+ categories due to the gear/power creep of the final DLC. In v1.0, there were enough differences to merit separate categories, but now you can easily 1-2 shot the NG+ categories at any difficulty all while being invincible.

There is a 2 week embargo on submissions as the mods determine rulings, categories, etc. Feel free to reach out to them or join the associated discord. Many of us there would be happy to answer any questions.

A few announcements for those of you not part of the discord. With the DLC coming out today, we have made a few decisions regarding leaderboards.

  1. Since the leaderboards have been up for a few months and there's been no interest in NG+ Co-Op (0 runs), we'll be removing the category for the time being. If anyone does a run, we'll be happy to add it back in!

  2. Additionally, we'll be moving the runs under Chaos difficulty into the "Any Difficulty" category, due to high similarities in times with every other difficulty present under "Any Difficulty". LVL 300 Chaos runs will remain separate however.

  3. We'll be letting the dust settle on the new patch + DLC for about 2 weeks while everyone plays through it and experiments with the changes that are being made. If you downpatch to 1.04 or below on console or PC, please feel free to continue submitting runs. There will probably be changes coming to the leaderboards, but what that entails we don't know just yet. Thank you for understanding!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to any of the moderators via message or discord forum.

Recently FFX added a Cutscene Remover Category and it has gained a lot of traction. I was wondering if we could do the same for FFVIII? It considerably cuts down the run time and might allow for more competition from people who may turn away from 7+ hour long runs. Thoughts?

Nice - that's 2 submissions! Let's keep it going.

Thanks for that response! Yeah RNG is a part of FF runs for sure, but I'm more concerned with barriers of progressing. Seems like there is no X and Y events must happen before you can progress and those events have a 20% chance of occurring.

Is that the only manipulation you need to do? Is there a guide/link for the manipulations?

Hey - so I just noticed that there is a new category of Any% - Cutscene Remover which seems fantastic since it brings the total time to run down significantly. I was thinking about learning this run, but was curious about a couple of questions I had:

-Does this run have a huge RNG element to it? For reference, I am currently running XIII-2 and one of my biggest turnoffs about it is that there are multiple huge time losses (2-3 mins sometimes) due to the strategy that are completely out of your control.

-Are there any drops/strategies to look out for that are rare, but help you save time?

-Are there manipulations that you need to do throughout the run or is it more of a hit new game and play?

Thanks!

Let's get some more buzz around this category...what's not to love about it?

  • Sub 2 hour run
  • Become a Triple Triad card shark
  • Mercilessly slaughter G-Soldiers as Seifer (pun intended)
  • High paying starting SeeD salary

And the list goes on!

Hey fellow FF8 runners,

Is anyone interested in running the Perfect Dollet Exam - PC category for non Win 7? Here is a total dogsh*t run to get the ball rolling if so! :) This run can have huge improvements to card farm and ap farm. I'd love to compete in this category so I'll make improvements if we get some submissions.

100% agree with all of the rule changes!

Yeah - it's definitely good to keep the categories separate for the reasons you stated, but I think the organization could be tweaked a little bit. As someone with an Intel CPU, I have no interest in comparing my no FPS fix runs with FPS fix runs. This is how it is currently structured when you go to view your profile, so its just a little confusing when your placement is different there from the filtered leaderboard.

I also feel like not having the AMD CPU is a similar inaccessibility as not having a PC or console. So we separate those categories because they have different run speeds.

Just a thought though! No worries if no changes since the correct information is still easily accessible :) Thanks for the response!

Hey - don't want to step on any toes here, but just an idea. Would it be possible to split the Any % category into these 4 subcategories: (PC, PC - FPSFix, PS3, Xbox 360)

With this format, you won't have to filter to see the different leaderboards and the proper comparisons will be active in profiles. I think a lot of other FF games do a similar type of formatting.

ex: FF7 Any % has Slots and No Slots, but you don't have to filter the leaderboard to see current positions

I'll get the ball rolling here... 47:24, PS4, English Pretty good run! Not perfect RNG, but some really good fights (Anacondaur and Elvoret)
