I really hope you'll bring back the single star RTA as this has been a great help for many of us trying to do longer runs faster. Now for example, I am trying to find out if a tj in bits is faster than the common route, but it takes more time when I don't have an official "This is the fastest. period"-video to look at.

Well... I think the only accepted emu for sm64 is pj64 1.1.6. But yes, you can absolutely play on an android phone with a bluetooth controller, I do that on longer flights

A nice video you made right there! One tiny mistake though. You talked about using mips for getting into bitfs, but you do not blj there. In the start of this glitch, you performed a simple jump + making mario move a bit backwards, which isn't technically a blj. But I loved the video!

Yep, that's one of the standard moves. The tricker part of the Twomp fight is to get the last ground pound just where the star is, and minimalize the walking distance of Twomp as this takes some time.

Norwaybjotos255 years ago

Just remove the intro using gameshark, but keep the stars as they are, that's not very hard. Crabshack, how can a game be cheated with gs/everdrive if a certain code is used? Eventually, timing from pipe could be something. I know someone discussed that earlier. I mean, I have waited around 28 hours for the intro already, and more people have probably waited longer, and it's just so pointless..

Norwaybjotos255 years ago

Hey! Is there any reason why we start the timing from reset and not from file select? Those extra 50 seconds are long when multiplied with like 1000...

Norwaybjotos255 years ago

Rd it is, welcome and I wish you all luck with your future runs and practices. Feel free to step by my stream which is about to start over at twitch :) I can probably give some tips over there as well

BUT: If you want a serious tip, I would like to know if you got sm64 on n64, or are you playing on emulator? Nevertheless, I recommend you to actually go for this strategy, coming from someone who is taking a master degree in music, where practice is key:

  1. Practice. This can mean many things actually. What's practice in sm64 anyway? Well, the goal of the game (read speedrunning) is basically getting the wanted results whenever you're trying them. Look over at lunar and akki to mention a few who are working hard on their skills. They often go over and over at the same stages, yes, even at the same movements (which you should google GameShark for). And this is a very good and efficient way of practicing this holy sport made of everything nice and addictiveness.
  2. When everything is good and you feel comfortable with your movement, I would recommend you checking out alternative routes. But remember: Don't go for advanced routes if you don't know the movements and have gotten them consistent yet. Then go back to (1).
  3. Do a run and record it.
  4. Go through this run and don't think about the time. Now your job is to be critical. Be an internet troll to yourself and hate your own run. It sounds stupid, but this will let you see what you can improve more easily.
  5. There is no (5). Go back to one and repeat everything to get a new PB.

Comments: Well... About practice. This depends on, but also return to the same, if you're doing a longer or shorter run (Now thinking e.g. 120/70 vs 16/1/0 stars). The (2) is maybe more important in the shorter runs than the longer ones, but I still recommend doing long runs or simply playing the game and trying out strats you've seen other speedrunners do. This is a good way to practice certain movements which in the overall helps making you a better runner. Let's say you want to do a 16 star run, but you have no experience with the game. You'll be heavily beaten by someone who has never played the original, but a lot of rom hacks and learned BLJs, which is required to reach the very end of the game with 70 stars or less. BUT: Let's say you have two persons who have played the original sm64 and same version, just as long, where one has been practicing the 0/1 star, while the other has only been doing 70 star runs. The 70-runner will likely beat the 0/1-runner after some practice of the strats and also by learning these new movements like LBLJ. But: If they were both to learn a new category, the 120 star runner will definitely win. This is because he has: 1: Tried those stars before. 2: He knows the movement and is much more comfortable with movements that might not be required in a 0/1 star run.

You understand?

And also, I see you're from Romania, @RandomDude! I love your folk music, even though my master thesis will be about regional and sociocultural differences and similarities in Bulgarian wedding music from the communism until today :p

Tip number one over any other tip: DON'T. I just came here from an 8 hour stream session, it's not worth it man, it's better to do drugs or something. god.

Hey! SM64 Island is a hack that deserves to be on these pages with a leaderboard. It has multiple categories, 0 stars, 65 stars and 138 stars. I've been running the 0 stars for a while, and here you have a link to my pb: It's created by Doncamilo996 and was released 6/03/2018

Norwaybjotos255 years ago

I would love to join! As many other runners, I think I'm more comfortable with single runs instead of groups/teams, but it's up to you to decide, I guess. Hope many people would like to join this!

Thanks for clearing that up!

Good question. Well, the frequency of the frames IS faster on TV's from US and Japan, where both are showing 30 frames per second. While our European TVs (PAL), have 24fps.

This results in everything going slightly faster on NTSC, so I would say yes as of this. But a better question might be; Is it the console or the monitor which decides the speed?

As an example, if you play on emulator, you can use a screen that easily can run 60fps, but the US and Japanese versions of the game are still faster than the European version of sm64, as the fps rate is equal to the ones played on the original consoles. But this is important: You can't just magically run it on 60fps! If that was so, then the game would be twice as fast, and a 20 minutes 16 star run would now be 10 minutes! And this is also the reason why speedrunners don't ever use the European version. The game would be too slow, and they would lose time that's not directly the player's fault.

So I hope someone else can answer this, is it the TV or the console that decides the speed of the gameplay? My intuition says that it should be faster, but my intuition sucks and should never be trusted.

Hi! I'm about to start speedrunning Super Mario 64 Ocarina of Time. But I can't anything about the game here on speedrun.com. Anyone know an easy way to add new hacks of sm64 available for runs?

Norwaybjotos256 years ago

Can confirm. I had a usb n64 controller and after a month of speedrunning, both the joystick and the A-button were torn out. Then I got a xbox one controller (with bluetooth, but usb is better for runs.) Works like a charm, and I prefer that one over both the original n64 controller and the hori!

Norwaybjotos256 years ago

Da blir macen med til Frankrike hvis OpenEmu er ok :) Version requirement?

Norwaybjotos256 years ago

Hey guys! Is there any approved and working ways of speedrunning on a tablet? Going away for some time, and can't use pj64 v1.6 Is mupen/megan64 accepted here? Also, is it possible to wire up a bluetooth controller on a tablet (microusb to microusb)? And what about the timer? Yes, I know what google is, but it's pretty hard to find out what would be accepted here without a windows pc, as I have at home.
