I skip that issue by using 2 timers : One that I never stop during my record session, and another one to time my run. That way, even if I have an accident with my run timer, the other one can be easily used to see when I start my run and when it's over.

4th time attendee, first time volunteer.

ESA Summer 19 was a good week for me, despite the fact that the busy pc room was stressful to use with a run that happened the final day of the marathon.

  • The Speedgaming room added a huge upgrade to most of the tournaments' ideas or entertainments done at ESA.

  • I'm reading your feedbacks, and as part of the Infodesk, I'm glad that our work made it very useful & helpful for a lot of attendees.

? I don't know where to put this, but some people asked the Infodesk about tech people to setup a game on stream, host or donation readers... Maybe a different color of the badge can make ESA staff more remarkable inside the crowd, so they are easier to spot if we are looking for them ?

  • As a volunteer, I agree with the fact that the vouchers can't please everyone as a compensation. If you become tired of the burgers or the drinks from the bar, it's difficult to use them all for your own satisfaction.

  • ESA becoming more and more popular + less pcs than last years (some were dedicated to the speedgaming room) + A lot of pc runs on the schedule resulted in a very complicated pc room. Between the runners + Speedgaming attendees who wanted to practice and people who wanted to have fun, the different needs went a lot incompatible. Clear rules on the PC room may solve the issue, but the situation seems a bit complex. Without any laptop, the pc training might have been stressful for some people.

  • The Street Boyz issue, their gaming place was completely too close from Stream 1

  • Quiet practice room was a tough place to deal with this year. If I remember ESA Summer 18 correctly, people used to care more about the silence of the room when Stream 2 was next to it.

Thank you for your attention.

I understand that you have difficulties, but it looks like that in your current situation, willing to do speedrun right now is adding more trouble to it. Is that really reasonable to force it now if you're that much careful about electricity ?

And this website is just an area to compare our runs with some from other people. That doesn't prevent you to speedrun whatever you want on any console or emulator you want on your own. Not at all. it's just that you runs could have numerous reasons to not appear here, depending of the mods and communities.

The top 10 of Momodora is mixed with keyboard and controller players whatever the category, and both are fine imo. If the controls on the Switch are close to the pc's ones it's fine, unless you're not the type of runner who's good with controllers.

Well, let's use the results on this topic then :

  • If we are a kind of representation of the society, the number of the whole people who attended here is 100%
  • Most of people here, whatever the reasons, are against your idea of the control of the lurkers, so this part is an amount of %people you won't expect to go to your discord (which represents a big one here).
  • What is left are the lurkers, and people who agree on your terms. According to this topic, this part is a weak%.
  • The number of attendees may seem low, but the rest of the people are basically people who don't care about it, or other lurkers, and the lurkers are supposed to be treated with a specific status on your discord already.

These are the actual facts. And we don't even know if the content of the discord will be interesting enough to make the few people left join your group and be active on it.

Same idea as starsmiley, I'm on numerous servers and it's not about being active on everyone of them, but at least reading to keep an eye on the news.

And the lurker role sounds weird, because if one day lurkers are brave enough to voice their opinion on something really important, like new skips or everything else, they simply won't, because they simply can't.

It sounds really weird as well to put real life logic and Internet logic on the same level of comparison.

Anyway, each Discord group is a village, this is your choice to lead your Discord the way you want it to be. There's no specific rule about that, so if you really want to separate people according to their activity, you can.

I think it depends of the moderators.

Runners and mods are humans, so it's more like a deal with the whole community of a game to make it balanced and smooth : For example, your run is probably easier to check if your vod is decent quality, with a timer in addition. And so they can be quicker if numerous submits appear at the same time.

If I take another example, at the release of Super Mario Odyssey, if every runs were submitted without timer when they were raining by packs of 10, retiming would have been a complete mess.

Of course it's dumb if you reject a run because no timer, unless it's clearly written on the rules. But the fact that it's not said doesn't mean you should'nt. Everyone can do a little step to help making the interaction between mods and players smoother, especially if you appreciate the community.

Sometimes you have this kind of accident, even on ps4. The PS4's timer wasn't there, but even if it was, saying that the timer is always accurate is not that much simple, just because it never happened to your own runs.

FranceYa-GG6 years ago

We already have runs from PS4 streaming on the different leaderboards. It just requires more efforts for mods because the PS4's timer is not always accurate, but it's fine.

FranceYa-GG6 years ago

I asked most of the community about it, and we decided unanimously that it's nope for the moment. First of all, we don't see the point, and it will be a complete mess if we are supposed to create categories, depending of the difficulty, the items which are used...

You're free to do your own level runs, but we won't modify the leaderboard especially for that.

In real life or inside the Internet, you're not supposed to threaten someone of doxing and getting his/her ass beat, intimidation are most of the time forbidden and punished by laws. If you don't or can't understand this, there is probably no more to say to you.

Whatever you were joking or not when you said these words, you let enough resources to have potential issues with justice.

"And put into note that I’m not sure how long I’ll be on the site since I’m getting really busy in personal life such as a job and school and college soon after"

No offense, but that's exactly the problem here : We have numerous people here, with different ages, and a lot of us have a job or are doing studies to get one in the future. And they still are averagely good mods. We are not blind about IRL business because we all have big or small IRL business, and that is exactly why becoming a moderator implies reflexion & responsabilities when you wanna do it, despite of what you do IRL.

Moderating is not only about knowing a game and having some WR's, it's about taking the responsability to carry a game by helping newcomers and runners, checking runs, and facing debates or dramas when it happens. Knowing the game is good, but you need to be available and to have good communication with others, with diplomacy.

Being mod is mostly not fun, not easy, and it takes time. And it's definitely not a decision to take lightly, as collecting Pokemon.

You're asking about what to do now as moderator, after you went so far collecting games' moderations ? This is completely wrong order.

If you're a mod, give some advices to newcomers & runners if they have question about something that you know about the game, check and verify runs if they are good, face issues and debates if they appear inside communities, while staying objective the most possible. There are various ways to be a good mod, but these are common roots.

And if you know you're about to leave any moderation, or won't be able to do your job as mod, anticipate : inform your community about it, and look if someone else is valuable enough to take your place.

These aren't smart ideas, these aren't rocket science. But these are supposed to be obvious if you care the least minimum about any game or community as mod.

Second time attending ESA, but first time doing it the entire week (last year was a big fuckery because I replaced someone to save a race in a hurry) :

(+)

  • The positioning of the tables was good this year, giving more space for attendees to sit or to move in the venue.

  • The partnership with Burger King was a good idea. It’s really cool to have multiples ways to make the run entertaining, through performances, commentaries, and even doing memes sometimes (shout-outs to Ladaur, Fuzzyness & the staff who was there Friday in the early morning to make the french baguette meme possible during the Pandora’s Tower run).

  • Mass housing is still fine for me.

(-)

  • The interviews sounded randomish this year, if we compare to last year.

  • Like others said, the use of couches for people who were watching any runs was lacking this year (probably because they were used for chill/training areas instead).

  • The Save the Children ads are good, but not really adapted that much to be used between 2 runs inside a marathon like ESA.

  • The tchat on the big screen can be really fun if viewers are cool, but at the opposite, it might completely become a painful experience if they decide to get mad or trolly towards runners/commentators, especially if we have no choice, but having it in front of us during runs. The runners/commentators should probably decide to have or not the tchat visible during the performances imo.

  • Second time doing a race, second time facing technical issues. Bad luck Kappa. I still believe.

  • I’m not especially involved, but the fact that ESA’s donations were fast only if they were done with credit card instead of using Paypal can be annoying for people. Few runners probably tried to add some fun by doing some special donations during runs, but because of the use of Paypal, it wasn’t done in time.

Good week for me.
