@xenkaroshi We already have Most/Least Active and Most/Least Runs. Adding Most/Least players to the mix of that is pretty redundant and would just yield in having 3 different search types that result in almost identical results. No need to have so many similar dropdown search options, it just makes it more clustered.

I'm still playing through the campaign and if I am to start doing runs then they will be single lap runs. I really don't have the stamina or time to do 100% as it takes waaaay too long and the any % is really not fun since it's less actual driving and more about menu-ing for at least half an hour.

EstoniaUniwersal4 years ago

Ye, I agree with Speedey. 100% should unlock everything there is to unlock and win everything there is to win, so you would have nothing else to do... you know, 100% completion.

I really think the rules should be cleaned up on this site though, I might start looking into this game myself too, I've quite enjoyed my first time single player campaign of this game.

I believe you both missed my core issue with this. I know that there will always be bots and stuff. My point was that this is the only site where I have to reveal personal info to the public. It's something that scammers seek, a hub for free contacts on random people, allowing them to contact people on social media sites where they normally wouldn't be able to. Discord, facebook, steam and some others being the obvious ones. I'd prefer these scammers/bots not to flow to my other communication devices just because of speedrun.com.

I don't expect any action to be taken from this. Just wanted to spread awareness to moderators of the site that these things do happen on a more frequent basis than they are reported and it is an issue that is most likely to grow as the site gains popularity. Being a moderator of a game is currently equivalent to giving your phone number and all your contact info to an advertising company.

The recent email verification for moderators was a great addition for the site's security. I just wish that user security and user privacy would be taken a look at as well as the site continues to grow.

Sure, I realize there will always be the issue of bots, scammers etc. I'd just prefer the issue to stay here rather than have scammers use this as a hub to invade other social media sites where I might socialize with my closest friends and family members.

A little side note: bots might be easier to detect, scammers a little less so. It might be blatant for you but it doesn't translate to everyone. Removing the over reliance of other social media sites could mitigate some of the damage. It protects people's privacy a little better.

I won't pursue this issue any longer, just wanted to make my concerns heard.

I got a friend invite from a scammer who messaged me on discord, trying to get my personal information. The only place where I've had to link my discord is speedrun.com which already gets bots regularly. Since people have to put out ways for other people to contact them due to the lack of internal messaging system on speedrun.com, I doubt this will be the last time it happens.

In some distant future when the messaging system is operational, I hope we can finally remove the tags for our personal accounts about our other social media sites. The game moderators already need to have email verification, so as a replacement method to contact a mod could be to give them a personal message and if they haven't been online for, let's say, 10 days or so, the message would pop up as a notification in their email box.

There's people who are more susceptible to scamming than others and as a result of this incident, I'd like to ask for personal messages to become a bigger priority in the "to do list" than it has been so far.

I would say Rollcage and Rollcage Stage 2, as I seem to be the only person who really plays them. The 2 racing games are pretty difficult to get a handle on but very rewarding once you do.

Rollcage Stage 2 especially has many different modes from hunting to getting the best lap times to playing through the campaign to super monkey ball-ish levels where you want to get through an obstacle course into finish as fast as you can.

Hey, would like to ask for these games to be added as a series:

Rollcage - https://www.speedrun.com/Rollcage Rollcage Stage 2 - https://www.speedrun.com/rollcage_stage_ii Grip - https://www.speedrun.com/GRIP

Grip is the newest game by the same developers and even though the games are almost 20 years apart from each other, they still strike a resounding resemblance.

why not post this in the Skyward Sword speedrunning forum? https://www.speedrun.com/lozss/forum

oh, my bad, I had been checking the "plague inc. evolved", not the original "Plague inc."

That's weird, the plague inc leaderboard had looked fine to me yesterday and there were lots of forum posts and yet the current mod hasn't been online for 9 days. Was there another mod that deleted the leaderboard and then his own account?

EstoniaUniwersal4 years ago

A game to run, a way to record yourself doing it (like OBS) and a timing method would help (like livesplit).

EstoniaUniwersal4 years ago

Cool, what games do you run?

EstoniaUniwersal4 years ago

I didn't know cookie clicker was on this site. I couldn't even fathom trying to run that.

This was a rather interesting thread to read.

The mods seem to be doing a good job actually. You can't just cover up most of your screen with a watermark and expect people to accept your run, it's common sense.

@Timmiluvs

Hey Timmi, about what you said.
It’s not a revolutionary idea, no, but it’s also redundant for a site like this. This site hosts videos that exist on sites where comments are mostly supported. YouTube already has a robust comment system, so why not just leverage that?
There's tons of sites that use videos or pictures from other sites but they still hold the comments on their own site. Easiest example would be almost every news site that pulls a lot of videos and pictures from external hosting sites such as youtube, but they still have their own comment sections which get a lot of feedback. Why would we not want to have everything speedrun related on a speedrunning site where like minded people gather and instead rely on sites like youtube and twitch which also are banned for certain countries.
It’s been a common thought whenever this idea comes up that it’s not necessarily a bad idea, it would just introduce more headaches than benefits. There’s other things the site can focus on that would be infinitely more useful than trying to find the best way to introduce a comment system
I can't see any headaches bad enough that would arise from the implementation of comments that doesn't have an easy solution. Your are welcome to enlighten me. Also I do wonder what other things the site puts their future focus on that is more beneficial than giving the people a better way to express themselves.

@xDrHellx
Another option - mods wouldn't even need to check the comments. Could just have a simple like/dislike on comments and if a comment reaches a certain dislike ratio compared to likes (Let's say 1 like to 5 dislikes) then it can just become hidden, kinda like a spoiler tag. I remember youtube long time ago had something similar in place.

so basically on leaderboards without more than 5 runners this wouldn't work, the spam would just stay
First of all you the like/dislikes could be done by anyone interested in watching the video, not just the runners of the game, so it really has no bearing on how many runners a game has. Secondly it would have no effect on spam as by including the feature to comment won't suddenly increase the amount of spam the site gets and it would be reported exactly the same way as it is right now. If anything then it could help in reducing the amount of spam on display since through dislikes it would become hidden like a spoiler tag as I mentioned earlier and thus can be dealt with even before having to wait for a full mod to deal with it as we do now.
sometimes people become moderator because the old moderators are inactive, in wich case it's not a choice, just a consequence (someone had to approve the run, but the old moderator was inactive and thus had to be replaced)
No can force you to become a moderator, no matter the circumstance. Being a moderator is a responsibility that is taken upon by the user by choice. If a game has a moderator that has become inactive, then removing that mod from that position is completely justified. A game can be without a moderator until someone comes along that is interested in playing the game and for being the only person keeping the game alive, they are more than justified in being a mod for that game.
anyway, there's been a lot of topics about this already, and it's always the same thing : barely anyone would be fine with such a feature, and it's easy to understand why most people would be against it
What you said here, proves the opposite. The fact that this topic keeps popping up over and over shows that people care and therefore is something worth talking about. The main question here is "Is it beneficial for the site?" and every argument that states why this is a bad idea, I've come up with a solution, most of which are being used by other sites. I'm just one guy and there's certainly way cleverer and more intuitive people on this site than me. I have nothing against constructive criticism against the idea of messages/comments but I really dislike half-hearted pessimistic bad arguments.
